It was Saturday morning and Lily was up early. This was pretty normal for her though. She'd always been so busy with everything that she rarely had time to sleep in. So on days like today, when she could, she tended to get up early anyway, mostly due to force of habit.
Still, it was too early to do anything...even to pick up her snowboard which was really all she wanted to do. She'd dropped it off a few days ago to be re waxed and they told her it would be ready first thing Saturday morning. The only problem was that first thing Saturday morning, meant at 11:00 when the shop actually opened.
So Lily decided to hit the gym early morning, after all she usually tried to work out a good number of days each week. It was reaching the end of snowboarding season but she still needed to keep up the momentum and stay in shape off season too.
After the gym she headed back home for a shower and some breakfast. And then it seemed that it was finally time to head to the shop. Lily couldn't drive yet, so she decided to walk over. She didn't have any plans for the day so she figured she might as well walk and if she got tired of carrying the snowboard home...well, she could call for a ride.
She wore her blonde hair down, it falling just to her shoulders and she was dressed in a pair of jeans, Vans, and a Roxy tank top and sunglasses and she walked toward the shop. It wasn't a long walk, maybe 15 minutes or so before she arrived, sticking her sunglasses on her head as she walked inside. "Hey," she said walking up to the guy behind the counter. "My board ready?"
"Sure," he told her. "It's in the back...just give me a few minutes."
Lily nodded, "Sure," she said, starting to look around a bit while she waited. She didn't really need anything right now and she got a lot of her gear for free from her sponsors, but that didn't mean she didn't like to see what else was out there. As she looked she heard the door to the store open and someone else walk in, however she didn't really pay much attention to this and continued looking.

There was something to be said about being one of the most sought after boys in high school and still not have plans big enough to not have him wake up at seven am in the morning. Haden was slowly becoming obscure. A hot, sexy girl with an incredibly ridiculously insane car had asked him out but no. He said no. Why? Because he was hung up over a girl he could barely speak two words to for fear of sounding like a total idiot.
He had to get out of this funk. So he decided to get out of bed, shower, inform his mother of his whereabouts and get out of the house to spend some much needed time at the gym. He blasted his MP3 player with some good old Lynrd Skynrd as he started running on the threadmill. After a solid hour on it, he moved to the bench press.
He devoted half an hour to practically all the equipments in the gym. He might have checked out some really hot girls and embarrassingly for him, older women who checked him out too. He saw a blonde who looked really familiar who must have been around his age. He thought she went to school with him. Disregarding it, Haden continued with his regime until he couldn't stand anymore. He hit the sauna for a bit and then the shower before heading out to get a bite to eat.
The weather looked pretty amazing, he just knew the beach should be a perfect hang out for him. Surprisingly, he still had the energy even after such an intense workout. But he didn't bring along his surfboard and he wasn't too keen on going back home just to get it. He looked for his wallet in his gym bag and found some money stashed in the side pocket, more than enough to get him a new board. He was due for a new one anyway. After grabbing his iced coffee, he drove to the store to get a board and some shorts.
The only place he trusted was a bit away from where he was but it was well worth it because they sold quality goods and it didn't hurt that the girls who frequent the store are surfer chicks with bodies that could only be described as...well, okay you could bounce quarters off their abs. And they were almost always in their surf wear. Got him all hot and bothered most of the time.
As he entered the shop, his eyes were immediately drawn to the register to find the regular guy who helped him but he was instead met with the back of a rather attractive looking girl. Her dressing wasn't as appealing as the surfer chicks but what he saw, he liked. He looked around first, not wanting to creep the girl out and also to wait for the guy. When he did finally show up, Haden raised a hand up in greeting. "Hey, Aid. I'll be right with you." The guy said. With a shrug, he assured the guy it was okay in his deep voice. "Take your time, I'll be fine here."
He found a board that was pretty awesome with some chinese characters on it and a simple blue dragon drawing going from the bottom to the top. He walked to the counter and signaled for the guy. "Sorry to interrupt," he directed the apology to the girl mostly, surprised to see that it was the girl he had seen at the gym. He blinked a bit before turning to the guy. "But do you still have that tan one in stock?" he pointed to the only tan board on display. When he was assured that it was, he turned his attention to the board that was on the counter. "You snowboard? Or is this a gift for someone?" He asked the girl, not able to shake off how familiar she was.

While Lily tended to be quiet and stay under the radar in school, she still knew who people were, including Haden Kiley. She had noticed him at the gym, but it wasn't like she was going to talk to him. She had to assume that he had no clue who she was, after all, most people had no clue who she was. It was sort of funny, because in the world of action sports, she was kind of a big deal. She wasn't just a pro snowboarder, but she'd been the youngest to take the gold in the X-Games and there was already buzz about her making the Olympic team in a few years. Yet in school, most people didn't even know her name. It was sort of refreshing though, in a way. Sometimes it could get frustrating or lonely but, at the same time, it was nice being somewhere where she could be anonymous.
As for the skate/snow/surf shop, she wasn't anonymous there. They knew her and they knew action sports. There was even a picture of her up on the wall holding her metals that they'd had her autograph before they stuck it behind the front desk along with a few other photos of pro's that had been in and out of the shop. She liked to pretend it wasn't there though, mostly because it was embarrassing.
When she realized it was once again Haden Kiley she was seeing, she couldn't help but suppress a smile. She didn't have a crush on the boy or anything like that, sure he was cute, but she didn't know much about him past that. It was more that this was the second time she was seeing him today. Had he been a friend, she might have made a 'great minds' comment but she kept that to herself. In fact, she wouldn't have talked to him at all, had he not said something to her.
"Um...no, this is mine," she said simply, "wanted to get it fixed up a little before the season ends...which is kind of soon," she explained, although of course she had the indoor half pipe she went to for practice as well as the fact that her family usually spent at least part of their summer somewhere with snow.
"So...you surf?" she asked, "Or is that a gift for someone?"

Her answer made Haden cock an eyebrow upwards. So she snowboards. And she looked like this? The winter sports are definitely taking it up a notch if girls like this one in front of him was into it. He reckoned she must be at least a fanatic if she's willing to send her board to this shop to get it fixed. Amateurs knew this place is for hardcore skaters, snowboarders, skiiers and surfers. Haden liked this girl already.
Her next words made Haden chuckle in amusement. The girl had to be aware that quoting back a guy's sentence either implied she was annoyed by him or she was flirting back. She didn't look annoyed so it had to be the latter. He still felt like he'd seen her before. Outside school probably. Was she a model? Couldn't be. She's a bit on the petite side. So where had Haden seen her before.
She did say the season was ending, and that either meant she was a big fan and di a little freelance snowboarding or she actually competed. Was it possible that he'd seen her on TV, maybe? He wasn't a hardcore fan of the X Games but he did like to watch. "That's for me." He pointed to the board when something caught his eye on the left side of the board he had been eyeing. The picture showed a girl in a dark snowboarding hat and full gear with a board similar to the one on the counter if not the same one, holding up a few gold medals with a small kind of embarrassed smile on her face. Looked like a girl who had a bit of confidence issues. Which he thought was a bit ironic since she was a competitor at the X Games, only one of the majorly publicised sports competitions in the world.
He turned to look at the girl beside him and then back at the photo. "Lily Spencer," he chuckled to himself. "You're the youngest snowboarder to ever make gold." He didn't mean to sound like a schoolgirl with a crush but he was really impressed with her career. "You go to Gould, don't you?" he asked, not quite believing he was actually in the presence of Daniel Spencer's daughter. He was a fan of the Olympic champion skier even after he retired.

Lily actually wasn't flirting. She wasn't annoyed, but she wasn't flirting either. She just hadn't known what to say, so she'd repeated his words. It wasn't that she wasn't interested in him, it was more that she knew that someone like that who was actually popular and sought after in school could possibly be interested in someone like her. So it was more like she wasn't bothering being interested because she didn't see the point.
She nodded when he said that the surf board was for himself. She wasn't surprised that he surfed...a lot of guys around here did. It was the next words out of his mouth that surprised her. Haden Kiley watched the X-Games...knew who she was? What?! She shook her head a little nervously, "No...no, that's not me," she said, although her face was already beat red from being recognized by someone she'd recognized. "Okay...it is...sorry, I'm a bad liar," she said looking down at the floor. "I'm just not used to people from school knowing anything about me," she admitted with a small shrug.
When it came to snowboarding and school, Lily was a completely different person. When she was with her snowboarding friends she was loud and fun and always surrounded by people. She didn't mind people recognizing her then...then it was an honor. But school was different, she didn't fit in at school. Nobody knew who she was and nobody cared...which was fine...it just got lonely sometimes. She never made any friends because she'd miss too much time during snowboarding season, which caused her grades to fail as well.
Lily wasn't outgoing in school. The girls there were all so skinny and pretty and she thought she looked like a big blob. Lily was skinny of course, but she was also pretty muscular which did make her bigger than some of the other girls her size, but still not fat. But that's not the way Lily saw it. But of course that didn't matter with her snowboarding friends...they all had the same build.
"So...um...I had no idea you were into x-games and all that," she said, not wanting to disappoint him since he seemed genuinely excited upon realizing who she was. "That's cool...you're Haden, right?" she asked, even though she already knew the answer to that.

Her weak attempt at lying was noticed but Haden didn't call her out on it, rather waited until she did it herself. The smirk that came to his face when she outed herself was warranted. She was pretty cute flustered. "I might probably be the only one. I mean I don't follow it too much but my dad passed down some of his admiration for your dad's strong career to me. Guess I skipped a generation."
When she acted so non-chalant by asking his name, Haden nodded and kept his smirk at bay. He knew she recognised him. Even if she didn't know him personally, she would know his reputation. She may be a celebrity but she was still a Gould female student. Unless she batted for the same team, she would know who he was.
"I'm Haden. And you're Lily. We can go over all the awkward chitchat and go straight down to what we really want." He paused and gave her a little smile. "Let's just start with what I want. You want to join me at the beach? Catch some waves, get a hotdog afterwards, whatever. You don't have any plans do you?"
The guy behind the counter interrupted their conversation to hand Haden the surfboard he had asked for. "Oh this is gorgeous..." He smoothed a hand over the surface of the board, tracing the shape of the dragon before reaching down into his pocket to fish out for his money and handed it to the guy. "Hey thanks Pete. Lily Spencer's in your store. Did you know that?" Haden chuckled, gesturing to Lily.
She was really cute, Haden thought to himself as he brought the board to his side. "I've got space in my car for your board, no worries."

Lily had heard people gush before about both herself and her father...anyone that were big fans of winter sports knew who they were. Her brother too of course, but he just never got the same recognition because he had to compete against Shawn White, and really, well there was no competing with him, which was a shame because she knew her brother had a lot of talent. However, he was more nameless, settling for silvers and bronzes, while Lily had become the girl to beat when it came to girls snowboarding, even though boys snowboarding was much more technical, mostly due to physical strength. Lily didn't like to think that girls were weaker, per say, but there was just something about their builds or something that they just couldn't get the same kind of air on the half pipe.
She nodded at Haden, "Well, I'm sure my dad will be pleased to hear that...most people kind of forgot about him, although I guess his name still comes up whenever the winter Olympics come around," she said with a shrug. It wasn't really a bad thing, it was just that most people were focused on the new and younger stars of the sport.
Lily was kind of surprised by how forward he was. What they really wanted to do? What was that, she wondered... She listened as he invited her to the beach. Really? One of the most popular guys in school wanted to hang out with her... She supposed that people could be surprising sometimes but this was ridiculously surprising... If she had a list of things she thought would never happen...this wouldn't have even been on it because it was so far from anything she'd thought of that the thought had never entered her mind! "I uh...well, I don't have any plans," she admitted, "but I also don't have any stuff with me and I don't really surf...I mean, I have before, but it was a long time ago and I didn't do it long enough to get any good," she admitted. She could skateboard decently, mostly because she could apply the same principles she did with snowboarding on the half pipe, but surfing didn't really have a half pipe, which was her biggest strength.
Lily blushed when Haden pointing her out to Pete, who just nodded, as if he was approving of this union or something. He knew very well who Lily was and he also knew that she usually came in alone or with her family and never with any friends...definitely not with any boys. It was sort of embarrassing.
"Well...I guess this place does have surfing gear..." she said trailing off. While the Spencer family was by no means rich (more middle class really) Lily did get a lot of money and free stuff from her sponsors, so she could afford to splurge a little on other stuff if she wanted. While normally, if she wanted to surf, she'd just ask one of her sponsors if they could send her a surfboard, but of course there was no time for that. "So...what makes a surfboard good?" she asked looking around. While she knew the difference between different features in snowboards, surfboards all looked the same to her. Part of her wondered if this was a really bad idea, but the shy girl in her that always seemed to be overlooked was excited that Haden Kiley wanted to hang out with her, plus she easily rationalized that doing some surfing would be good balance practice that could help her in the snow....

"It's unfair that's the case. I mean your dad was pretty much a legend. But I guess we all have to move on." Haden shrugged casually. "Which isn't that bad a thing if you and your brother are part of the next generation. He's pretty much off the radar, right?" He asked as he got his change back from Pete. He got a good grip on his board and leaned against the counter, concentrating on what Lily had to say.
It wasn't so much out of interest but Haden learned long ago that if you let yourself slip up whenever a girl is talking, you'd be in big trouble. The girl would walk away in a huff and never speak to you again. So he developed an astute sense of hearing and concentration just so he won't slip up and make the girl think he was only interested in one thing, which essentially he was but what good would it do to reveal his intentions straightaway?
"Well, this is a good time as any to start learning." Haden turned to Pete. "Is Keller in?" Turning back to Lily, he explained who Keller was. "He's a pro surfer. Taught me everything I know."
"Uh, Haden, he's not in." Pete said with a grin that made Haden raise an eyebrow. "Huh...okay." Haden turned back to Lily and shrugged. "Guess you're stuck with me. And yes...this place does have surfing gear," the dark-haired junior chuckled as he looked around the whole store. At her question, Haden looked her up and down, trying to measure her to a board that would be perfect for her size.
"Hold on a sec," Haden held up a finger and walked over to the surfboards section and ran his eyes over the selection. He kept glancing back to Lily before finally choosing one that was appropriate for her stature and built. "Pete, ring this one up on my tab." He wasn't an extravagant person but once in awhile, he liked to indulge and one of the ways he indulged was on women. It was a douchebag move on his part but he saw women as investments. You take interest, you put in some good money on them and you wait until they flourish.
With Lily, he thought if he spent some time with her, get her this surfboard, his payout would either be her wanting to spend more time with him either as his surf buddy or she would be glad to say yes when he asked her out on a date. Either way, it would be a win-win situation for him. And it wouldn't hurt if this could possibly mean that the shy girl would gain some confidence and act how she's supposed to act with a body and a career and a face like hers. "And throw in a couple of wetsuits for the both of us."

Lily shrugged about her dad. The thing with extreme sports people was that they had a much smaller fan base. She was sort of fine with that though. She liked it. She knew that basketball players and football players got much more press and attention, but Lily wasn't exactly an attention whore so the thought that she could do what she loved and compete in snowboarding and come out being very little known in the end, was definitely a perk to her. "He's pretty good, he's gotten some bronzes, a few silvers, but the competition is kind of harder for the guys, there are some real stand out people and also most people who want to do it," Lily explained.
Haden seemed to by paying a lot of attention to her, Lily noticed. She certainly wasn't the type to get mad or wander away or anything if he was paying attention to something else, but also that had to do a lot with the fact that outside of competitions and such, she didn't really expect anyone to pay attention to her.
Lily nodded when he explained about getting her lessons with some pro. She didn't really think she needed it...okay, she probably did, but still, Haden seemed to be going really out of his way for her which still blew her mind. Why her of all people when there were tons of better looking girls he could get at school...or at least in Lily's mind there were. "Are you sure?" Lily said when they learned that the pro wasn't in and that Haden was going to have to teach her. "I don't want to like ruin your time or anything...I know the basics...or at least I think I remember them, but you won't get too much surfing in if you are stuck with me." Lily still didn't get it. She still wasn't getting that Haden actually wanted to show her, so as much as she did want to go, her attempts at backing out were more for his sake than for hers...at least in her mind.
She watched as Haden looked around the room, sizing up the surf boards. He seemed to really know what he was doing. It was pretty impressive, and Lily was finding that she really liked that he actually knew what he was doing. To Lily, knowing your stuff about a sport, was a turn on, mostly because so many people had no idea what they were doing. Her eyes widened however when he said to put it on his tab. "Oh...you don't have to...I can..." but she trailed off as she watched Pete just do what Haden had said. "Thanks..." she said, although she totally felt bad about letting him spend so much on her. She made a mental note to see if maybe she could get him some free stuff from her sponsors to make up for it.
And then he added in the wetsuits too...another pricey thing. Wow...just wow...no one had every really treated her like this before...at least no one outside of her family. Sure, he was probably rich, sure it was probably no big deal to him, but still, it was still him going out of his way and doing something that he totally didn't have to do and he was doing it all for her.
"Thanks again," Lily said as they headed out of the store. "You really didn't have to...and I'll totally make it up to you," she told him. He was carrying the two surfboards and she had her snowboard and the wet suits. "Do you want a snowboard?" she asked. "Or would you want surfing stuff? I mean, you just got a new board, but....I'll totally feel bad if I don't get you anything," she said as she followed him to his car. She was really glad that she hadn't asked anyone to drive her to the store...this totally wouldn't have been happening if she'd been with her mom or something.

"It's harder for the boys coz we can't put on a bikini and look hot in front of a camera." Haden winked before chuckling. "I'm kidding, trust me. I wouldn't touch you girls' competition with a ten feet pole. I commend you for being able to stand without losing your balance on those slopes. I wouldn't be able to do that."
When Lily asked for reassurance, Haden looked at her and squeezed her shoulder. "It would be my honor." Haden nodded, quite aware of how cheesy he was being. But if it made the girl smile or at least laugh at how lame he was, he thought it was an accomplishment. Getting girls to laugh is a good thing for guys, he thought. Depending on what type of laugh though but Haden hadn't gotten any complaints on his flirting techniques so far so he thought he was going on the right direction.
"Besides, sometimes teaching someone something you love is better than doing it alone." Which is true for Haden. That actually wasn't simply a pick up line or anything. Besides, spending more time with Lily might make her see that being with people outside of her sporting arena could be a refreshing change.
Haden ignored Lily's protests and raised one hand to Pete when their purchases were rung up. They exited the store with Lily thanking him again. "Hey, no biggie. You don't have to make it up to me." Haden thought having a pretty girl like her hang out with him was making it up to him enough. He wasn't going to admit that of course. Why should he?
Laughing at Lily's offers, Haden shook his head as he opened the door to his car for Lily to put her stuff in. He opened the passanger seat for her, waiting for her to get in before closing it shut and running to the driver's seat. "You know what you can get me? Some food later after the surfing lessons. You're gonna get crazy cravings after being out in the water too long." He suggested as he started the car for the beach.
