The mention of girls in bikinis wasn't something that normally would bother Lily, but he was referring to the ones she competed with, thus lumping her into the groups, which wasn't exactly favorable to Lily. Sure, she owned bikinis, but she usually just felt self-conscious and awkward in them and she didn't like to think of snowboarding having anything to do with bikinis, because if it did, she'd probably lose. But luckily he admitted he was kidding, which put a small smile to Lily's face. "standing up isn't the hard part," she said, "all the tricks and jumps are much harder. Have you snowboarded before?" she asked. She'd sort of assumed he had because he'd watched and known about the sport, but mentioning standing up as difficult maybe he hadn't, or maybe he was just being nice. Sure Southern California wasn't backed with mountains or anything, but there were places you could go that weren't too far away...just a few hours...close enough for a day trip even.
Lily did smile when he squeezed her shoulder. He really didn't seem to mind teaching her a bit which was a good thing. It was still all pretty unbelievable of course, and if she had any friends at school, she probably would have run home to tell them the crazy news right away! But she didn't really have anyone like that in school to share news with, and of course her snowboarding friends wouldn't understand because they had no idea who Haden was.
"Yeah, I guess you're right," Lily said, thinking back to when she'd helped teach some younger cousins to snowboard. It had actually been kind of fun doing the bunny slopes for a day. Of course Lily didn't have to be told that she should hang out with people outside of her sport, but it was just so hard making friends in school. She'd have people she'd talk to in her classes, maybe be friendly with enough to eat lunch with occasionally, but the truth was, that during a big part of the school year, Lily was very busy. She'd be training all the time and she'd miss chunks of school for competitions. Now, of course things were winding down, there was still some snow but no more competitions till next winter.
"Food...fine, I can do that," Lily said as she got into his car. "I still wanna get you a snowboard or something though," she said, wondering if she should mention that anything she got for him would be gotten for free through her sponsors. Maybe he didn't want her spending the money. She looked over at him as she buckled her seat belt, "But if I have to settle for food, its going to be like the best food ever," she told him with a grin. Maybe she still would get him a board later but she didn't really want bicker over it now, not that their disagreement of payback was serious or anything. As Lily leaned back in her seat, ready to head to the beach, she couldn't help but smile a little at this whole situation. This was really happening!
