He sat in the local coffee shop drinking a coffee that was like heaven to him, Alex had Kai and he had a night of freedom well a couple of hours before he had to go pick Kai up. He was lucky in that Alex was so happy to take their son from him for a couple of hours, he had the boy most of the time and loved having him... but this was the first time in two years he had a little freedom... hell he even had a date it was disasterous mind you but it was fun.
He had been shopping yesterday when his mother said he needed some clothes that didn't scream single dad, or depressed adolescent. He and Kai had brought whole new wardrobes, which had pleased his son, who had then insisted on having a new teddy bear. Thanks to Alex's parents he had no money worries for the first time since he had become a father, so he had been able to spoil Kai just a little bit. His monetary issues alleviated he could finally concentrate on the fun side of raising a son from time to time.
He knew that Greg had a crush on his ex girlfriend, he wasn't nearly as bothered or scared of this as he thought he might be, he didn't see Greg as a threat to him and knew that Alex would never challenge him for Kai. They would work it out somehow, somewhere down the line. He looked at his drink seeing that it was empty he sighed.
"Can I have another one please." he said.
Even though he knew that Kai was safe, he felt like an expectant father all over again, he was antsy to pick up Kai already and Kai had only been gone an hour.

After sitting around while her father attempted to pull his life back into a form he understood and Dare sulked upstairs and did his school work, Syn finally understood the old adage about eating Chinese and being hungry an hour later. Dare ran past saying he had somewhere to be and not to expect him for dinner. So Syn decided to do something about her hunger and scrounged until she found her dad's wallet and grabbed a twenty out of it and headed to a local coffee shop that the doorman directed her to when asked for a decent meal.
Stepping inside, Syn felt out of place, most were people just getting off work. She found an empty stool and sat down next to a guy around her age. She ordered a chocolate milk shake and a grilled ham and cheese with tomato. She just stared at the counters for a while, but then bored, she glanced at the boy next to her. He looked pretty straight but she knew that looks could be deceiving. "Hey," she ventured, for her a massive attempt at being friendly.

Ashley looked up startled at being spoken to, it wasn't the server but a girl he had a vague feeling that he had seen before, probably from school... or just a figment of his imagination and he had never seen her before in his life, she was pretty which could account for half of the people in the city with breasts. Yeah that was one way to start this, the last time he had let his... well the last time he didn't use his brain to think he became a father. Kicking those particular thoughts to one side, so he could at least answer the girl without thinking the obvious.
"Hi am I in your place?" he asked with a polite smile, his face was etched with worry but for a completely different reason other than maybe sitting on someone's regular chair. He wanted nothing more than to pick up his son, especially after the letter he had read before dropping his son of. He was one worried father, even though rashionally he knew Alex would never do it. He was scared of losing the one person in his life that gave him direction and drive to achieve what he wanted most in life.

Syn frowned. The guy seemed to be deep in thought about something that wasn't happy. "Sorry, I disturbed you. I was trying an experiment and apparently it was a fail," she said and went back to staring at her chipped black nail polish. The waitress brought her chocolate shake and Syn gratefully began to sip it slowly, not wanting brain freeze.
After a few more minutes of silence, Syn looked back at the rather emo young man next to her. "I'm sorry... I know it is none of my business, but you seem really upset. Maybe talking about it would help?" she asked, not really sure why. None of it was her problem and she doubted she could help him anyway. She really needed to get a hobby.

Ashley chuckled, "Actually your drawing me out of a depressed stupor, trust me when I say that what I was thinking about is just not worth the time to explain. It is stupid, I know enough to know the person concerned wouldn't do what I'm worrying about." Ashley said which was true.
He had seen Alex with Kai, he had seen how hard she was trying to get to know there son, he couldn't let himself go back to her. It wasn't that he didn't care for his son's mother he did, he cared to much for her. But he didn't love her enough to put his son in the crossairs if it all went bottoms up. His concern was about making sure that his son got the love he needed, then he would worry about his own non existent love live.
"When your a parent and your sons mother ran for hills on her fathers orders, you kind of hit rock bottom, I was left holding the baby. A kid I love to pieces, but two years later his mother walks back into our lives. I can't deny her access to him, as much as I would have loved to when she showed up for the first time. Now I get a letter from her father offering an obscene amount of money to send his daughter away for the safety of my family and there reputation. Yeah my life is just dandy." he said his voice tinged with anger rather than sadness.
"If I drank, I would be drunk as a skunk." he added.
