Dare found himself at odd ends for lunch and decided to head outside again as it had been an amusing time the day before. He wondered if he would ever make friends that he could hang with more than one day at a time, but he decided he needed to give himself time. With guitar and pack slung over his slim shoulders he headed out to the same tree as yesterday and settled down to investigate his lunch. He had a wrap with several kinds of cheese, romaine lettuce, tomatoes and hummus, a container with fruit salad and a couple of pieces of blackberry pie. He thought he could die happily after eating a lunch like that. He began to nibble at it and watched the happenings around campus.
After a bit that got boring though as he really had no part in their busy lives so he pulled his ipod out, set some speakers out and began to listen to the tracks his father had sent him from their current recording session. It wasn’t long before he was laying out on the grass with his eyes closed and doing air drums along with the music. It was true that guitar was his instrument, but drums were easier lying down somehow.

Roxy had decided to head outside for lunch. She hadn't seen Thad or Ezzie or anyone in the caf so although she saw a few others she knew scattered about they all seemed engaged so Roxy figured she'd go head outside and do her own thing. She was walking around looking for a spot to sit when she heard the music.
While the band sounded familiar, Roxy didn't know the songs so she assumed it was someone she didn't know. But Roxy loved music....all kinds of music, and whatever this was...she liked it. She looked at the long haired boy that looked a bit like a girl, but Roxy knew he was a boy because although she didn't know him personally she'd seen him around school before.
Her mind was still trying to decide whether she should leave him be and just sit closely enough by to listen while she ate, when he mouth could the better of her, which it often did. "Hey...what are you listening to?" she blurted. "Sorry...didn't mean to like wake you up," she said when he opened his eyes. "I was just wondering what it was...I like it," she said with a smile.

Dare opened his eyes and smiled widely. He sat up. "Hey it's ok, I wasn't sleeping, just jamming in my head. This is Toxic Religion, my dad's band. They are recording in Nashville at the moment an he sent me a couple of the new tracks to preview, I'm Dare Madison by the way," he said and held out his hand.
"I will tell Dad the tracks have one thumbs up, he likes to get praise. The next one is one he wrote," he went on, seeing he had her interest. "Are you a musician? or just a lover of music?"

"Oh Toxic Religion," Roxy smiled. "I like them--thought it sounded similar but I'd never heard the songs before so wasn't sure," she explained. "You say your dad's in that band? That's pretty sweet." Roxy sometimes wished her parents had cool occupations like that. If they had, maybe they would have been more busy with their own lives and less concerned with controlling her's.
"I'd say more a music lover than a musician...I mean I guess I'm kind of a musician. I can sing and I play a little bit on the guitar and piano but I like to think of myself as more of a dancer. I like singing and all that but have way more fun with the dancing," she explained. She by no means considered herself and actor even though that was what she was constantly being pushed to do.
"Are you a musician like your dad?" she asked, now even more curious about this boy due to his famous parents. Roxy was by no means a celebrity whore or anything like that. For the most part she didn't care if someone was famous or not. But having musician parents was still wicked cool. Way cooler than actors or anything like that.

"Yeah my dad is Maddog the drummer, it's pretty cool. Until this year I always traveled with him. Then he got afraid I was going to turn into a psycho geek or something and needed to be socialized, so here I am," Dare explained. He thought it was a load of crock, but he couldn't convince his father and so here he was, stuck where his social life was like a series of one night stands without even the joys of sex. At least he had the weekend bowling adventure to look forward to. He found his eyes scanning the campus in hopes of seeing an elegant top hat.
"Would you want to be a pop singer like Britney Spear or someone like that?" Dare asked, not sure how to react to that. He had a hard time thinking of her as a musician. She was more of a performer. But she had made herself famous so who was he to judge. "I like watching dancers, but my dad's music doesn't really lend itself to that kind of thing."
His smile got really wide when she asked if he was a musician too and he nodded his head emphatically. "There is nothing I want more than to be a full-time musician. I got to play lead guitar for them for five months when Paul was in the hospital this year. It was great. I didn't want to leave when he got out. But I really want to play my own music anyway. After school lets out." Dare patted his guitar case with a loving hand.

"Oh that's so cool. I bet you got to see so many places," Roxy said, thinking this guy had even a cooler life now. Yet at the same time she pictured what it would be like to travel around with her parents all the time and well...maybe it was just because her parents weren't cool, but she was pretty sure even if they were she'd still miss her friends. Roxy liked school because that was where she primarily spend time with her friends and she couldn't imagine life without them.
"I don't know," Roxy admitted. "I mean I know a lot of people always look down on people like Britney and the whole pop thing but I think its kind of fun. I don't think all music has to be serious. I think I'd like being someone like Shakira more though because I like adding a little salsa and latin vibes into the mix. I think that's even more fun. But really, I think you can dance to anything...even Toxic Religion. I think some music is just more obvious to dancing but that doesn't mean you can't dance to rock music or stuff like that if you wanted to."
She smiled when he lovingly looked at his guitar case and started talking about his own music. "What kind of music do you wanna play?" she asked. "It can't be too hard to get you started since you already have connections with all the record and management companies and all that." For him it wouldn't be as difficult as if would be for a performer or band who had no idea how the inner workings of the music industry worked. Roxy didn't really know either but she knew it was more complicated than it seemed.

"I guess I just can't respect what Britney has done with her life. She started out trying to be a role model for teens and then she became something I wouldn't want my child becoming. I mean I know that the rock scene makes temptations hard to resist, but if you're not going to stay the distance then don't make yourself out to be something you can't be," Dare said, thinking of the whole drug scene and the crap with her kids and all. He was very anti-drug despite growing up with all that, mainly cause of his mother dying of an overdose. "Shakira is cool, She is definitely talented and I respect pulling your culture into your music."
"Yeah I have been lucky to see lots of the world, it is very broadening when it comes to respecting other cultures. It is hard to have friends and a normal life though, hence my being here now. I find this much harder than being constantly on the move. I am having a hard time learning to make friends. Maybe I try to hard or something," Dare confessed.
He was glad to turn the subject back to music. "I tend to write a mix of stuff but I would have to say it is closest to alternative or emo music. Fall out Boy, Blink 182, stuff like that. I have a CD produced, but as soon as it was printed, I went to help my dad on tour so I didn't really get to promote it. I have a couple songs from it on my ipod if you want to hear them," he offered, a little apprehensive of criticism or even worse silent loathing, but it was stupid to hide when that was what he wanted to do with his life.

"Yeah I think its one of those things that happens to a lot of performers when they start out young though...so much pressure on them to be perfect that they just snap," Roxy said. She could understand that. She wasn't even famous and she could feel the pressure on her from her parents. She wanted to snap sometimes. And maybe she hadn't gone completely crazy but she definitely had done some things that many people might consider crazy, especially when considering she'd done them more to defy her parents than anything else.
She nodded when he said it got lonely and felt sort of bad for him when her said he had a hard time making friends. He seemed cool though so she really didn't know why. "You can always hang out with me--my friends are pretty awesome," Roxy said. "Although you're not really in my classes so I'm guessing your older. As long as you don't mind hanging out with a bunch of freshmen you're welcome to chill any time," she offered. She could see him getting along with Thad and Ezzie, although there was always a chance that they'd scare him away. When the three were together they were often hyper and very silly.
"Oh cool," Roxy said. Blink182 was mostly before her time although they were coming back now so she'd gotten to listen to a bunch of their stuff and really like it. Fall Out Boy was cool too. She liked that sort of music because it could still be fun. She didn't like when stuff got too slow and emo because then it was just depressing. "Yeah, I'd love to hear it sometime. I should probably go though...the bell's gonna ring any minute but what's the cd called? I'll check it out on itunes if its available," she offered.

"My dad has been really careful about what he lets me participate in, I guess it would be harder if you didn't have a parent who kept control. Britney's parents try to act more like pals than parents. That just doesn't work, not when you're talking about drugs and alcohol," Dare agreed
"Thanks Roxy, I just might come hang out some days. I'm a Junior, but I look younger so it should be cool,' Dare said with grin not wanting her friends to be freaked out by an older kid hanging with them.
"The group is Paranoid Phantasm and the CD is self-titled but we have a single called, "My Nightmare Can Beat Yours," he told her as he gathered his things. He hoped she liked it. It would be embarrassing if she thought it sucked. "It was great meeting you Roxy. Hope to see you soon
