Ivy walked into Gould School and was completely blasé about the security check. As a military brat, she was used to such precautions. She had a folder to give the office so she could officially be enrolled in the school. This was the first time she was allowed to go to a public school rather than the school they had on base for the officer’s kids. She was grateful if only for the fact she didn’t have to wear a uniform.
Today she had on a pair of wide belled low-riders, a white tank top and a long purple vest that hung open in a flow to her knees. Under she had on a pair of eggplant colored suede boots. She had various pieces of costume jewelry on, an assortment of charm bracelets on one wrist and an elegant silver bracelet engraved with black tribal animals, a collar of chains hanging in various lengths from her throat to her décolletage and two rings as well as a pair of strawberry crystal earrings. Ivy knew she looked good, but was it too much for this school. From what she had heard about L.A. she hoped not. All she could do was trust instinct, but she knew in a place like this her first impression could be her last.
Keeping a warm smile on her pretty lips, the young Asian girl walked into the cafeteria as if she had been doing so for her entire high school career. Her dark almond eyes scanned the room and found a relatively empty table and approached. “Excuse me but are these seats taken?” she asked with a confident smile that said she was sure there was room for her in one of the at least six seats that were empty.

The table was relatively empty when Ryo had sat down, lunch in hand, and placed her back-pack on the floor. It was a fluke that she'd ended up in the cafeteria but there wasn't any way sneaking around to find a place to eat her lunch. Security was tighter and students caught where they shouldn't be would be punished. That was the last thing she wanted plus a phone call home. "Might as well..." Ryo pulled out her notebook and textbook from French class to begin yesterdays homework; it wasn't due until tomorrow. Lately she'd seen a decline in her grades and it was unacceptable even if she hated school. Dacian had a higher grade point average than her and it was a bit of a blow to her fragile ego.
"Excuse me but are these seats taken?"
Ryo looked up, a carrot stick hanging from her mouth, than looked around, "Yeah-" she took a bite from the vegetable, chewed than swallowed, "take whatever seat you want. I'm not waiting for anyone." The girl looked rather interesting with her choice of attire and the vast amount of jewelry on her persons but Ryo just smiled before turning back to her notebook. Today she'd packed a turkey sandwhich with some celery and carrot sticks and some green tea she'd chilled the night before. It was bitter but the sweetness of the carrots helped balanced it out.
French class had been interesting and a few words and phrases she'd known already but it wasn't easy having to do the homework. The drive just wasn't there. Ryo sighed, putting her pencil down, stretching as she sipped on the green tea. People had begun to pile into the cafeteria and the tables around them began to fill up.

"Great thanks," Ivy said and settled herself down, getting her lunch out of her bag. They had been downtown all morning getting her registration taken care of so they had stopped at a Wendy's and she had gotten a single with cheese, lettuce and tomato along with some fries and a coke. "Hi I'm Ivy, today is my first day," she said in an attempt to be friendly.
She looked around as she began to eat. "Is it always so crowded in here?" she asked, not used to the bustle of a school that had doubled its population and not knowing that was the case. "My last school in Texas wasn't nearly this big." She realized the other girl was studying and blushed. "Oh I'm sorry; I will shut up so you can study."

"No," Ryo put away her things and stretched, she'd been scrunched up in her seat that if one where to look closely she appeared to be caving in on herself, "Its okay its just a bit of early homework but I can do it at home." Chewing on a stick of celery she placed both of her feet on the ground, "Well welcome to Gould High school, Ivy, I'm Ryo and it isn't always this crowded actually but our school is currently hosting Silver High School since they've had tragedy after tragedy in the last month or so." Ivy was lucky that today was her first day instead of just a few days ago with the tragic shootings. It amazed Ryo that someone would still want to attend Gould after that.
"What grade are you in? I'm a junior." True she was a junior but she tend to look younger to some people or older. Ivy didn't look like she was from Texas nor did she sound like she'd come from there. "What part of Texas are you from?" It wasn't that she thought people from Texas wore cowboy hats and rode horses to school but they had a certain swagger to their walk and talk. A kind of slow drawl and easy going life style.
The lettuce she'd used was still crisp as she bit into the sandwhich and Ryo did wish she had bought a bag of chips but it was healthier this way. Taking a sip of her green tea she'd waited on the girls response.

Ivy felt a little unsure whether Ryo really wanted her there or not. She seemed very guarded, but she just might be that way. "I'm a Sophomore and we were in San Antonio... the Air Force base. Hence we have moved a lot. I was born in Honolulu but my father died when I was a baby. My mom married my stepdad and we have been moving ever since," she said, not wanting Ryo to get the wrong idea about her.
Ivy ate her fries and looked around the cafeteria. "This is two schools? It isn't that bad I guess. The school in San Antonio was about this crowded I think and it was just one school. We didn't have all the interesting stuff you have here either." She shuddered when she thought of it.

Honolulu? A fellow Hawaiian possibly though the girl had mentioned that her biological father had passed away, "I'm sorry to hear about your father," Even though the girl hadn't known her father personally it was still sad to hear about the passing of a parent. Ryo didn't know what she would do if one of her parents had died. Well, actually she would know and it was a place that wasn't somewhere she'd like to go. Instead of a parent it was a grandparent that she'd grown close to before they died. For a week straight she cried constantly.
"My family and I are from Kailua plus I was born there." Hawai'i was a place she'd missed dearly but it was nice to live in California, though Compton wasn't what she'd dreamt of, "We use to live near MCBH but we moved after my 2nd birthday. He's a freshman here at Gould." This coming summer her grandparents were either going to visit or they'd be taking a week long vacation. It brought some comfort that the ocean faced her former home.
Ryo tried to smile but it looked as if she'd smelt something funny, "Yeah, I'm not sure when they'll be heading back to their school but its rather interesting. I'm quite surprise we don't have many fights considering they are our rival school." There was no need to bring up the shooting but because that wouldn't be a good welcome speech.
"So tell me, what is Texas like? Is it really as hot as they claim it to be?"

Ivy smiled at the sympathy. "I was young when he died, but I loved him very much. I haven't seen his family since my mom remarried," she said with a sigh. She didn't necessarily hate her stepfather, just what he represented, the loss of people that were all she had left of her natural father. It was never a good time to send her to visit. She was terrified her grandparents would die and she wouldn't have seen them again.
"Kailua... I think we went there once, but I don't really remember. My father had a boat and we would go from island to island on vacations. It was really a lovely way to grow up. I wish it didn't have to end," Ivy said reminiscently. Of course she really only remembered the good times, but still she wished she could go back, but only if she could take her baby brother with her.
She laughed and nodded. "Texas is very big and some places are hotter than others, but yes it is hot. We were in San Antonio and it is luckily very arid there. I met some people from around Houston that said it was like living in a steam room there, very hot and damp. I would not have wanted to live there at all," she said with a shudder.

"One of my favorite islands has to be Kauai, its so beautiful there and it doesn't get that many visitors as Oahu or the Big Island, I've got some family in Molokai and even though it represented so much sadness they've found a way to make it beautiful again." The island had once been the home of many lepers and they'd been left to die basically but even though they were gone now the memory was still there. Ryo took another sip of her tea in order to wash down the bite of turkey sandwhich she'd taken.
"It rains a lot though in San Antonio doesn't it? I can't say I've been there but it seems like a nice city and very cultural. I've had a friend from Houston who says it floods there frequently but I've heard that too about the humidity. Its nice that it isn't that bad here but we've got the ocean breeze to help us out a bit. From what your saying it doesn't sound like a fun place to be stationed at."
"Do you miss Hawai'i?" Ryo pronounced the w as a v as she smiled, it was a place she missed but every other summer would go visit her family with her brother, Dacian, though just by looking at them you wouldn't think they looked alike. Dacian had blonde hair while she had naturally dark brown hair.
