Lily sat in the cafe, swirling her coffee as she usually did when she felt lost for some reason. Today was Valentines Day, a holiday she always felt was kind of silly, but she had to admit she was feeling especially lonely as she finished another cup. Everywhere she had gone so far, people seemed to be walking hand in hand, smiling and laughing. But there was Lily, one hand on an empty cup and the other flicking through the pages in a newspaper.
She took a deep breath before letting out a long sigh, realising she had been too loud when a couple of people in the cafe looked across at her. Self conscious, she got up and moved to a sofa in the corner, calling for a refill of her drink. Valentines Day, she thought, what a silly holiday, but one she was desperately wanting to be a part of. Nobody had even sent her a card, must have been scared of her. That made sense, she could be intimidating at times. Actually, no, it was their fault for not making the effort and being men. This was the day, however, she was hoping for one of those movie chance encounters which never seemed to happen in real life. If only someone would come over and talk to her.

Slate had gone out over lunch and needed something strong, sweet and chocolatey. The usual places were out, nothing really was sounding good when he saw a small cafe, which sounded perfect. They surely had the thing he needed or he felt like he needed.
He stood in line looking over the board and there it was a Mocha Frost Dream!! A nicely blended combination of coffee, chocolate and ice topped with whipped cream and chocolate drizzled on the top! Sure it was going to be a big calorie hitter but he knew he's work it off during karate class on Monday. He dug through his wallet to make sure he had enough for the heavenly delight. Bills were fine but coins he wasn't sure about.
As he pulled a small handful out, a woman bumped him causing him to drop the coins every where. This was even worse that driving in the Gremlin and having it back fire in the wrong part of town! He started a mad scramble for the coin marathon, that the coins seem to be winning. He muttered to himself as he picked them up one by one. He saw a couple by a girl seat on the sofa. Talk about an akward situation. He approached and tried to sound like a gentleman.
"I'm sorry to bother you but I need to get a couple coins by your foot." He smiled.

Lily peered over the top of her newspaper, looking down her legs towards the scrambling guy on the floor, raising her eyebrows curiously. Someone sure was desperate for a drink, she thought, closing the paper and folding it before tossing it onto the coffee table next to her.
“Well, go ahead.” She replied, trying not to smile too much at the obvious awkwardness Slate must have been feeling in that moment. Lily leant forward, watching the stranger with a smirk as a waitress refilled her drink. She quickly thanked the cafe employee before reaching down underneath her sofa, grabbing a stray coin and picking it up, before passing it to Slate. “Here you go, butterfingers.” Lily reclined in the sofa again, letting out a dissatisfied huff as she looked around the cafe, Slate still gathering his change on the floor. For a moment, she wondered whether or not this was her chance at having her day saved, but she thought that was too much to hope for. Maybe, though, it was worth a shot.
“Um, are you going to be drinking in here or taking it away? It’s pretty full in here and I don’t want you to think you can’t sit by me... that’s if you want to.” Lily reassured.

"Much obligied." His southern gentlemaness shined through as he got down on all four's finding every coin he dropped. A tideous taks at that but he didn't want someone to get a small fortune off his misfortune.
As he gathered what was sewn, he couldn't help but to think the girl was cute. She wasn't overly girly but at the same time she didn't try to hide herself. He popped up like a meerkat as she handed him a coin. "Butterfingers nothing, JLo's butt attacked me making me drop everything!" his sarcastic sense of humor came though.
"Let's see, I could either head back to school where the noise would make any dog howl AND be among those who are so enamoured by the days events or I could sit here till its time to head back and just relax." The look on his face could say it all, he'd just as soon relax.
"Thanks for the offer, I think I'll take you up on that." It was sort of a dateless date for Valentine's Day. "I'd say thank but I don't even know your name, I'm Slate." He offered to her.

“Oh good, grab a drink and take a seat.” Lily replied with a smile, shuffling to one side of the sofa to make more room for Slate, when he was ready to sit down, “Nice to meet you, Slate, my name’s Lily. You go to Silver High, right? I’m sure I’ve seen you around but we don’t have any classes together.”
Lily instantly recognised that his accent wasn’t local, he must have been from somewhere further south than Los Angeles. It was always nice to meet somebody else who hadn’t been in the state very long. After all, she didn’t consider the year she had spent at Silver to be enough to feel completely at home. It didn’t hurt that he seemed nice enough, and slightly charming.
“By the way, mind if I ask where you’re from? You don’t sound like it’s anywhere nearby.” Lily took a sip of her coffee, far gladder for some company than she would ever let on. She wasn’t even sure if it was because it was male company, just being alone on a day like this didn’t seem right. She could sense that Slate probably felt the same way, at least on some level.
