Mr. and Mrs. Ames had refused for their children to attend school that day. The news of the shooting had reached Okelani first while she'd been assisting a child pick out a book for a book report on Marie Curie. The first thought in her head was wanting to know if her own daughter had been caught in any cross-fire. What would she have done? Dacian was home with a cold, which she'd been worried about, but her only daughter and oldest had been sent to school that morning. Okelani had even seen her off before she'd been driven by her father, Edmund. Had Edmund known? A breath caught in her chest and she had to be help into a chair as she broke down. There hadn't been any information on the t.v. but it would only be a matter of minutes for it was broadcast all over the news channels.
Ryo had gotten out a much later than she would have liked but Okelani and Edmund had been their to pick her up. They'd seen the devestation all around them as the parents of the children lost cried for the fallen. Students huddled together while some prayed. All the while the unforgiving media's flashes took pictures to immoralized the tragedy. It felt like Columbine all over again but rumors had been circulating through-out Compton but the Ames had taken them as rumors an nothing more. Edmund had wanted to move his family out of the slum neighborhood, though they lived in a fairly decent part of the city, just for his children to be somewhat safer. Moving would prove to not be an option as mortages had gone up and it would put them into the red.
"If you go away, on this summer day, than you might as well, take the sun away," Ryo stared out into the ocean as she pulled her knees closer to her chest. The sound of bullets in her head. Today would have been the memorial or at least the schools version of paying respect to the deceased students. It was one place she hadn't wanted to be and luckily for her neither did her parents. Dacian was still ill so he wouldn't be in school for at least a couple more days. Ryo on the other hand didn't plan on going today. The emotions would run rampant and they would effect her more than she would have liked them to. Would there be school tomorrow? There was a possibility but really she hadn't wanted to go. What if something happened again? Would security increased ten-fold. Would they become a school with a metal detector like the movies had portrayed in the movies. A nail filer would be considered a weapon. Not like she carried one.
The wind was cool and blew her hair behind her creating an ethereal image. Ryo had worn a black dress today to show some kind of respect. It was a poor choice considering she'd be more dehydrated due to the color but it was a decision on her part. The dress was cottony and lightweight, billowing behind her when she'd walk, it was rather cheap to make and summery. "This isn't suppose to happen...only in the movies..." She whispered to herself, staring out into the ocean still, as she rest her chin on her knees. A heavy feeling on her chest. No one that she'd known personally had gotten shot but her heart when out to those that had been. Ryo leaned back, standing eventually, and walked back to the sidewalk, making her way to some unknown destination.
