Duke sat at one of the small table in the back of the cafeteria. He was reading a novel as he chucks down a few drops of his water from the bottle. He then sets the bottle down and contnuied to read. It was one of the books he had to finished for one of his classes.
Duke looked like he was into it but truth was he was struggling in this one. He loves to read and he usually would read a whole book no matter how many pages there are, he would have that book done in one day. But today seems to be tough for him. This novel he felt that the author didn't make sense at all in it. He sighed and tossed the book aside on the table, and put his hand to his face and rubbed away the aggravation and tiredness. He then heard soft foot steps coming towards him from behind and heard a soft familiar voice.
Duke turned his head to see and he smiled. He seemed surprised but happy to see her. "Oh hey... ah Happy Valentines!" he said grinning. And then offered her to sit with him. "Would you like to join me?" he asked.

Holding her tray, Nikki scanned the cafeteria. She had to wonder what had happened. She used to have plenty of guys asking her out, but lately...not so much. Was she really too easy? Was everyone done with her? In an attempt to not think about the fact that guys suddenly weren't interested in her, she'd thrown herself into cheerleading. Somehow she'd gotten picked to be the head cheerleader and she'd taken the job pretty seriously. So far she'd been doing great...or at least she thought she was...hoped she was.
And then there was Duke. Maybe the other guys had tired of her but not Duke. Duke liked her...really really liked her. And she'd tried to stay away from him. It wasn't that she disliked him...it was just that he was a bit intense. She wasn't used to someone treating her they way he did. But when it seemed like all the other boys had stopped wanting to hook up with her and she'd found herself alone on Valentine's Day, she couldn't help but smile at the thought that she knew Duke would be there.
Maybe he kind of shied away from being popular...but...maybe he could change that. He was already on the football team, so there was a definite start. She smiled as she approached him. "Hey," she said. "Uh, yeah, Happy Valentine's Day," she said with a smile, gingerly placing her tray on the table and sitting down in the chair across from him. "So how have you been?" she asked, tucking some of her long dark hair behind her ear.

Duke smiled and then leaned his right side of his face into his hand as he watched her sit across from him. He watched her tuck her dark hair behind her ear.
"You are looking very beautiful today Nikki" he said as he smiled to her and then sighed a bit and looked away hiding his smile and then clears his throat to answer her question about what's been going on in his life.
"I'm alright, just been dealing with school work and being asked to be co captian!" he said as he rolled his eyes and shook his head. "Yeah ever since I joined the army reserves now Coach is tossing oppunity at my way telling me that I need this on my application!" Duke's eyes looked a bit angry at that thought.
"But I said gave in and took the job!" he shrugged. "Mightest well, right? I mean what do I have to lose?" he shrugged and then stopped and smiled at her, as both his hand now laid on the table and then came together interlacing inbetween. "So how are you? How's the head cheerleading going for you?" He asked.
"Do you like chocolate?" he asked arching a brow with a smile.

"Thanks," Nikki said, returning his comment with a smile. See...she could always count on Duke. He really was a good guy. He just wanted a relationship and that scared the shit out of Nikki. Truth be told, Nikki had never really been in a proper relationship. She'd never had a guy treat her anything even remotely like the way Duke did, or if they did, they soon changed the moment they got her into bed. Maybe Duke just treated her this way because she hadn't slept with him yet...although somehow she knew this was not the case. Duke was different from most boys.
"You were asked to be co-captain?" she said, her eyes lighting up. "That...that's great!" she said, "Congratulations." His being co-captain was a good thing. It was make it harder for him to avoid the social obligations and popularity that surrounded the football team. Although she did frown when he mentioned the army. She didn't like that he'd enlisted, especially since they were technically still in a war. Nikki didn't like anything to do with the war. But she didn't voice this opinion--not to Duke at least. He'd already enlisted so it was too late.
"Cheerleading has been great," she said. "I guess its been taking up a lot of my time lately, but I don't mind," she said. "I like it and everyone on the team...seems to be doing well, so I'm happy with it," she said with a shrug.
She gave him a look when he asked if she liked chocolate. She kind of knew where he was going with it...or at least she thought she did since he'd already made his feelings for her very clear and it was Valentine's Day and all... "I'm a girl...of course I love chocolate," she smirked.

Duke smiled to Nikki when she smirked at him. He then turn slightly as he bent down for his bookbag on the floor under the table. He then fumbled around in the bag for a small 4X4 box of dark chocolate truffles. It was wrapped with a big red bow on it.
"I ah... didn't know rather to get you just those big boxes of heart shape chocolates which in my opinion it's sort of over doing the day of valentines but I thought this would be perfect for some one like you!" he said as he slide the box over to Nikki. "Considerate a valentine friend!" he smiled. He didn't want to scare her. Yes he wanted to get to know her and spend time with her and enventually go out and steady but he knew Nikki wasn't into that yet or not use to it or just not ready. Duke can understand that so he was more than happy to just accept friends. He rather be friends with Nikki than nothing at all.
"Happy Valentine's day!" he said sincerely and smile. "Yeah I noticed you've been really busy and that's good. You seem to enjoy cheerleading!" he said complentaring her work. "Yeah I figured why not I'll give it a go with this co- captian, who knows I just might like it!" he gave a small laugh and shrugged. Duke tilt his head to the side and looks to Nikki.
"So what are your plans tonight?" he asked.

Nikki smiled when she saw the gift. Her first Valentine's Day Gift...normally she got more...but she supposed she had been busy...she hadn't been going out as much...had all the guys forgotten about her so fast? Well, it seemed that Duke hadn't.
A Valentine's Day friend...did that mean that he didn't like her anymore? Maybe Nikki didn't want a serious relationship like he did, but still, knowing that he liked her...she kind of liked it. Okay, maybe that was kind of bitchy...he was a nice guy...she shouldn't be keeping him as a backup...but it was hard. She wished she wasn't in high school anymore...college would be so much better...she'd be so much more free...but college for her meant the army for Duke and she didn't exactly like the sound of that either...
"Thank you," she said as she opened the gift. She held the box out to him, offering him first pick of the truffles.
"Yeah, I've been pretty busy, but I do like cheerleading, so its been fun. I'm sure you'll make a great co-captain," she added with a smile, "you'll whip the team into shape," she teased.
Was he asking her out? She wasn't sure. She kind of wanted to go out...but she didn't want to give him the wrong idea either. She didn't want a relationship, or at least she didn't think she did. "I don't have any," she said. "What about you?" She didn't know if he'd ask her out or not, but she decided she might as well be honest, after all she didn't have plans.

Duke smiled at Nikki, he was happy to see that she was liking her gift. Duke looked at the box of truffles, and then grabbed on in the right corner one. He knew this one has an Irish creme filled flavor in it and was really good, he popped the small truffled into his mouth and chewed. "Mmm, Irish creme..." he muttered as he swollowed.
Duke sighed a bit and smiled. "Eh not much, my boss gave me the night off and I've finished all my home work ahead of schedual so I'm pretty much free. So I was wondering...." Duke said as he slightly trailed off and looks to Nikki, and then smiled.
"Well it's up to you, what ever you feel comfortable with. I was wondering would you like to go out for coffee? Or..." Duke said as he put his hand to his chin as if he was thinking wisely. "Would you like to catch a movie with me tonight!" he asked as his brows raised in question. "Or a trip to Disneyland!" he joked on the last one and smiled giving her something to laugh. He can tell she was nervous and not use to guys like him, and he didn't blame her, really if you look at it, theres not that many guys left like him. If you were to ask other women in their days men were like Duke but today Duke was considered to be a rare kind of gentleman.
"Or... would you like to be surprised?" he asked thinking how to make her valentine's day into something she'll enjoy and might like to do it again some times. Yes Duke was asking her out on a date but he was also trying to take it nice and easy and slow. He figured friends is the first step and then after the two get to know each other then maybe things will become more than friendship, but he wanted to give Nikki time and her own thoughts and decesion on what she likes to do. Duke smiled at her he couldn't help but look at her, she was so beautiful.

Once Duke took a chocolate, Nikki picked one and took a bite. It was filled with chocolate fudge...yum. Popping the rest in her mouth she listened as Duke asked her out. What a relief! A date on Valentine's day. But coffee...coffee wasn't something you did on Valentine's Day. Nikki wondered what she was thinking. She'd been spending her time avoiding Duke...she'd decided that he was too much...too over the top and old fashioned for her. But as soon as he said something like going out for coffee on Valentine's Day...or a Valentine's Day friend...Nikki didn't like that. Was she actually starting to like Duke back? Had she kept him on the back burner before just because she knew she could? It sounded like a really bitchy thing to do and Nikki thought that she was better than that but she had to admit to herself that she had gone to sit with Duke the moment the other male attention was gone.
Nikki wasn't sure how she felt. Maybe she did really like him. Maybe she really hadn't realized it before and hadn't worried about going after him because he'd been very attainable to her. But the second he seemed like he wasn't she wanted him...or at least she thought she did. "A surprise," she said with a smile. "I like the sound of that. Pick me up at 7:00?" she asked, looking across the table with him.
Yes, she was still unsure of her feelings. She didn't know if she only wanted Duke when she couldn't have him or if she actually did like him. But there was only one way to find out and a Valentine's Day date was a good way to start.

Duke smiled at Nikki when she said okay and what time will be good. "7 it is!" he said agreeing with a smile. He gently took her hand in his and pulled it to his lips. He kissed the back of her hand tenderly and then lay it back down on the table.
He then gotten up to his feet and looked at her. "Would you like me to walk you to your class?" he asked offering his hand to her. If she didn't accept that was fine, Duke understood if she does accept, then more the marrier Duke thought with a smile.
"See you at 7" he said with a gentle smile and then turn to leave the cafeteria.
