[character name: Ezmeralda Lopez] [Location: Pier]
It hurt. Like being stabbed a million times. When Ezzie had first heard the shots she was in a classroom studying with her lunch. She then saw people with guns walking down the halls and shooting so Ezzie ducked. She prayed that no one came into the classroom. She prayed that no one got shot. Of course how could people not get shot, these people were shooting up a school. It was all so scary. All Ezzie could think about was how much she did not want to die and how much she hoped no one she knew got hurt.
When the shooting was over Ezzie was asked to go to the principles office. No one ever wanted to be called there, especially on a day like today. However, Ezzie was asked and so was her brother, Pepe. It took her a few minutes to notice her sister was not there. "Where is Sierra?" Ezzie asked. She asked again her voice getting louder. That when they told her. Sierra had been caught in the crossfire and killed.
Ezzie fell right to the floor crying. Her sister was dead. Despite not always getting along, she loved her sister. Sierra loved her. It was not right. Her sister had died. Been killed. Pepe took Ezzie home, but she asked him to drop her off. She needed time. She would call when she was ready to be picked up. Pepe promised to cover for her. Ezzie walked along the pier for hours before finally sitting on a bench. Ezzie felt like crying again over the death of her sister. Over the whole day. It was so hard.

Sunar’s normally cheerful demeanor was mournful, shoulders stooped as he paced the Santa Monica pier. He had never expected anything like today, had never wanted it. Daja was safe, and that was some comfort, but already he had learned of deaths of people he knew. Tae hadn’t been among them, and for that he was grateful, but that didn’t mitigate the fact that he knew those people. He had been in class with Sierra Lopez for years now, had even been rejected by her Freshman year, and now she was gone. She would never roll her eyes at him again. It just didn’t seem fair.
He caught site of a girl on the bench, and recognized her as being one of Sierra’s million siblings. She looked dreadful, but of course he couldn’t blame her. If Daja had been in Sierra’s place…he was so glad that it hadn’t been his own sister. And then he winced in guilt as the implications of that hit him….No, he wasn’t glad that it had been Sierra. And yet, and yet, it easily could have been Daja, instead, and he was glad it hadn’t been, ergo he was to some extent glad it was Sierra. The guilt of it all nearly crushed him, and he wondered if he could really face Sierra’s little sister. But she looked so lonely, he couldn’t just pretend he didn’t see her.
“Hey.” He perched on the edge of the bench beside her, not waiting for an invitation, staring out at the horizon rather than at Ezzie herself. “I heard about….I’m sorry.” He wished he could think of something better to say than that, but nothing he said could change the situation.

Ezzie looked next to her. She reconized the guy. Could not think of his name but Sierra pointed him out as the guy who has been wanting her since freshmen year. Ezzie heard the story of how he asked her out once and apparently that made Seirra believe this guy had been wanting her ever since. It had been a silly thing to think about given what happened. "Thanks...." She said with a sad smile. Her normal crazy self was gone for now.
"Ummm....I am Ezzie.....nice to mee to you..." She figured she should introduce herself. It would be rude not to. THis guy was sitting her and being nice and she should not just dismiss that because she was in a abd mood because of what happened to her sister. At least it had not been both. Had her brother gotten hurt, it would have been bad.
"Anyone you know get hurt?" Ezzie had not even had time to think about Roxy, Thad or anyone else. Just her sister and her brother. Her parents had barely let her go ande ven now as they speak her brother Pepe was some where walking around waiting for Ezzie to go home. "This was my sisters favorite spot. She use to freak me out when I was little saying if you sat here then you would be safe from ghosts." It was just another silly thing that Ezzie thought of in that moment.

“I’m Sunar. Yeah, nice to meet you, too.” For once he was at a loss for words. What did you say to someone whose sister has just been killed?
Were all his acquaintances safe? He didn’t know. He hadn’t seen Tae; for all he knew she was absent. And he hadn’t talked to Connor, or Izzy, or Eden or any of that group, either. Truthfully he was afraid to call any of them, afraid to find out the truth. If something had happened to any of his friends there was nothing he could do about it, except mourn, and he wanted to delay the mourning as much as possible.
“I….don’t think so.” He sighed, not quite willing to admit he was avoiding calling on the off-chance one of them was. None of them had called him either, though, so were they doing the same, or was that an indication they were in injured?
“Safe from ghosts.” He repeated, giving the younger girl a bleak smile. “Then let’s stay here for awhile. I want to delay meeting any ghosts ‘til I absolutely have to.”
Her tone was a solid reminder to him that Sierra was truly gone. He ached for her, and yet he was so glad that his own older sister was perfectly safe. He could think of nothing to say, in any event, so he simply patted her gently on the arm. He couldn’t bring Sierra back, but he wished that he could. He wished he could change the very fabric of reality, but alas he was not blessed with those powers.

"Thanks." Ezzie said softly. She gave him a very small smile. The pat meant alot. Just simple gestures and touches were helping her to hold on. Reality sucked at the moment. She wanted to be lost in a dream world, but Ezzie doubted sleep would come easy tonight. Usually Ezzie had no problem sleeping. She was a heavy sleeper. SO heavy that Sierra would often have to hit Ezzie with a pillow to wake her up. Plus they shared a room. "It will be weird to not have her there...in ourbedroom..we shared one since we were close in age."
Only two years apart. Ezzie had never really had her own room and she use to pray for the day Sierra moved out or left, but now all she wanted was for Sierra to come back. Ezzie looked at Sunar, "The ghosts was a silly story. Like the story about the lighthouse, but....right now it feels real. If that makes sense."
To be honest when Ezzie got upset she often did not make sense. Sunar should just be thankful she was not speaking in Spanish because that could happen too. Ezzie had not even really seen her mom yet. She just spoke to her on the phone after Pepe called to inform her about Sierra. Her mother was crying. Not a sound Ezzie cared to hear. How Ezzie wished she had the power to reverse time. Like Hermione did in Harry Potter 3 with that necklace.
