There was a lot of confusion upon arrival at the hospital. Saint was put immediately in ICU, but as his mother was out of town and the twins had no idea how to contact their father, the hospital hesitated to authorize surgery on Saint. Finally his condition deteriorated so much that they had no choice. It seemed they had waited too long for Saint had not been on the operating table for long before he flat-lined. They tried to resuscitate him but he had been without a heart beat for almost three minutes before he gasped for air and the ECG showed life signs again. The doctors removed the bullet and closed up his skull, then went to tell his sister to pray that his brain was undamaged.
Lia refused to leave the hospital and they finally allowed her to stay in his room with Saint as he continued unconscious. Lia searched the internet for healing spells that she had access to the components. Her friend Nan got a hold of their family lawyer for Jandro and brought her the things she needed. Making a charm, Lia chanted over it buoyed by her success with the charm she made for Taki. Then exhausted, four hours after Saint came out of surgery, he woke with a weak groan.
“Santos ! You’re awake,” Lia cried, pressing kisses to his hand. “I am so relieved. I didn’t know what to do without you and Jandro. Her petite body shook with her relieved tears.
Santos frowned, not understanding much of what was going on, tried to shake his head clear but found the pain was too much to continue. “Lia? Please go slower. I don’t remember what’s been going on.” Truly all he knew was he had been fighting at school and then everything went black. “Where are we?” he asked, his voice weary.
”The ICU unit at the hospital. You were brought by the paramedics and you had surgery. You died, Saint. It’s a miracle you’re still alive. I was terrified,” Lia said, her words coming fast and distressed.
Saint shuddered, her voice seemed incredibly loud. “Why is it so dark in here?” he asked in a hushed voice. He couldn’t imagine that he had almost died. He didn’t even consider the part about him actually dying.
Lia looked around and giggled nervously. “Saint…. It’s not dark in here. All the lights are on so the nurses can check the machines and your vitals.
Saint let out a long low moan as he realized what that meant. No more sunsets on the beach, no more beautiful blossoms with soft dew drops dripping from the petals, no more glory filling his eyes. “Lia… go to Jandro. I want to be alone,” he said never realizing that Jandro would be there if he was able.
Lia had never heard such raw pain in anyone’s voice and knowing it was Saint, her beloved brother mad it all the worse. Knowing him as well as she did she knew that he would want to be alone, to assimilate this in solitude. “All right, Saint. I will go, but I will be back tomorrow. Mom will be home and I will bring her by after I meet her plane. Be good for the nurses. “ She kissed his cheek and left, sad that he had flinched away from her.
Saint stared at nothing and mourned his sight, his life and his love of art which he felt was now useless. A nurse came in later and gave him something in his IV which put him to sleep again, after telling him that the doctor would answer his questions in the morning.
