The best part of mornings were running with KB before school, feeling the wind against his face and the pavement under his feet, flying down the sidewalks and past the sleepy houses, drenched in sweat. The second best thing was washing all that sweat off again with a nice long shower before school. Today those were likely to be the only two good things, since it was Valentine's Day, the one day a year where public affection was not only acceptable, but actually encouraged. In his mind all the couples holding hands and smooching and generally being cute only served as a reminder that he was abnormal, broken, by society's standards, all because he didn't want a physical relationship. Nobody could get that through their heads! If he'd said he wanted physical intimacy but not emotional then plenty of people would have said that was normal for a teenage boy. But to not want either, that was beyond most people's comprehension, and it was frustrating.
"Nick!!" He shot out of the shower and into his brother's room, not bothering with a towel. The water had quite suddenly turned to ice on him, and he was sure he knew exactly who to blame. "What'd you do!!" He demanded, dripping water all over the carpet. "The water's freezing!"

"Don't be a tard Patch. If it was really freezing it would be ice." Nick was already dressed and sitting in front of a flat computer monitor with his back to the door. He didn't look up from the clicks and clacks of the mouse and keyboard, but it didn't take a reflection to know what he'd have seen behind him. He grabbed his own towel which had been draped over the chair and tossed it across the room. "And you look plenty wet to me so it must still be water. Dry that carpet up won't you?"
"I told you time and time again. You take lengthy showers and use up all the hot water. So don't get shitty with me when it gets cold. Besides it was working well enough for me when I showered." The vaguely pleasant chime signaled the powering down of the computer and Nick turned around to look on his twin. And purely for the irritation factor Nick crossed his arms and sighed. "Cheer up little fella. Today's Valentine's Day and you can finally tell that Jessica girl you're always flirting with just how much you love her." He scooped up his jacket slinging it over his shoulder. "Either way you might want to wear something half presentable just in case there's a new girl or something. She'll probably need a friend who knows what it's like to be laughed at." And in a half grumbled voice clearly unwilling to speak the words more clearly in case they should actually be understood, Nick choked out something that sounded something like, "I left you a couple of valentines in your bag in case you liked someone." But Nick was already slipping past his ganger and whistling down the stairs.
"Oh yeah I almost forgot. Can you make sure Dad gets his wrench back? Someone left it lying around next to the hot water heater this morning."

Patch was in no mood for Nick's sarcasm, especially since his twin was entirely correct. He hated it when Nick was right, which was pretty much always. "Be literal, then. You're such a nerd." He grumbled, snatching the towel the other boy tossed his way and patting half-heartedly at the carpet.
He grimaced at the mention of Jessica. "She's crazy!!" He protested. On the one hand he was very relieved that she was back at Silver and therefore couldn't attack him or Evan again, but on the other hand they still had not managed to gain her forgiveness, and she could still tell the police just whose errant fireworks had burned down her home. And since they hadn't heard from her since they had thrown their incredibly eloquent apology at her they hadn't been able to deliver any of the presents they'd got for her. He had discovered that Araceli was her friend, but only because Celi had decked him during soccer practice. So he couldn't very well deliver ask her how to get in touch with the other girl, and anyway even if she hadn't decided he had somehow done injury to her friend he couldn't risk her finding out exactly what that injury was, so he couldn't deliver apologies through her. Maybe Nick had a point, maybe Valentine's Day would be a good excuse to find out her information and get the cat collar and catnip to her. "Just 'cause Holly likes losers doesn't mean...wait. What?!" He wasn't really sure how he was supposed to finish that retort, now that it had sunk in what Nick had actually said. "Why would I want to go out with her?! She tried to gnaw me to death!!"
He was not entirely sure what Nick mumbled after that, but it sounded suspiciously as if Valentine's was mentioned somewhere in there, so it was probably something mocking. But before he could come up with an appropriately indignant reply his brother tossed that comment about the wrench and the water heater. "Hey!! You little snot! You did screw up the water! I knew it!! I wasn't in the shower for long enough for it to get that cold!!"
He seriously considered tackling his brother, but even he could recognize that tackling someone on the stairs was not a very good idea. So he contented himself with trying to grab his twin from behind. "I'm not fallin' for that again," He warned, knowing that if he returned the wrench and something was wrong with the water then he would get the blame. How many times had he taken the fall for his wilier twin? He refused to do that this time, he had his own trouble to worry about without adding Nick's on top of that.
