Otep had been waiting for what seemed like forever for Jem to call her. She was going to have "the talk" with her parents. Earlier than planned. She figited in her seat at the desk of the realtor's office as she prepared to sign the papers for the new house. She signed at the dotted line did all the thing necessary and then took out her cell phone. Still no. She walked out of the relator's office and then looked down, texting Jem. "Still alive?" she asked her half jokingly.
Things in the Norwood house were still....well. Not quite over. Her parents just sat silent after they goine around and around for a while with their daughter. Now...everyone just sat silently. Jem didn't ahve her phone near her at the moment, so she missed the text. She just waited...for something more to be said. She didn't like the silence. It was just too much.
Otep huffed as she checked her phone. No reply. "C'mon baby." she whispered to herself as she got in her car, putting the folder of papers in her glove compartment -- somwhere safe. She never lost anything in there. She would give her mom the news once she got home.
"Mom....dad..." she frowned. "Say...something else..please. The silence is killing me." she sighed and got up and started pacing the room. she had to do something. That wasn't just sitting. she saw her phone and picked it up. She saw her mom watching her as she did so. Watching her intenally as she texted bacck. "Still alive...awaiting..teh verfict."
Otep got the text and quickly answered. "Thank friggin God I thought you were a goner." she sent back and pulled into her parkinglot.
Jem hesitated before answering the latest text. Her mother was sitting there wiping ehr eyes with a tissue, her father stood by the window gazing out they each looked like they were in shock.
Otep didn't get another text. "No uhm... reactions yet?" she asked.
"There were...some...but...I don't think it's over yet...just..waiting to see..what's next.." she finally sent her back.
Otep huffed a little as she walked into her apartment. Or at least her temporary place of residence. They were to move tomorrow. And Otep would have the whole house decorated and done... by the end of the day today. And how was that going to happen? She hired a lot of people... and that's how it happened. Otep's mom was standing in the middle of the living room. "Otep? Boxes?" she asked. Yes... the whole house was packed into boxes. "Mom..." she said as she handed her the papers. Lisa's eyes watered with tears. Happy tears. "Oh my... God." she whispered and hugged Otep.
At least one house was getting some good news on this day. The other...was still in shock.
"Is Jem going to come?" Lisa asked curiously. "I've asked her. But... haven't gotten a final answer yet. One step at a time. I'm not going anywhere..." she said as she looked at Lisa. "Right now she's... breaking the news to her parents that she is... WITH me... let alone worry about LIVING with me." she said shaking her head. She plopped down on the couch which wasn't even theirs anymore. She put her hands on her face. "I feel like I've ruined everything for her and her family. Just.. walzing in and taking her from them." she said shaking her head as tears stung her eyes. Lisa sat next to her daughter and rubbed her back gently. "I don't think that's what's happening. It could have happened without you. That... was up to Jem." Lisa told her. "And why do I still feel like shit?" Otep asked
If they didn't start speaking up soon. She was just going to leave. They could find her if they decided to say anything else.
Otep was wallowing in the guilt of Jem and her parents' problems. She knew, no matter how much Jem or Lisa tried to talk her out of it, that it was mainly her fault this had to happen.
They finally had spoken up again. Jem wasn't sure of their reaction. "Uhh...ok." she said softly. They got through this..and no one mentioned or noticed the tattoo. Ok..one thing at a time here. She walked around some more. Texting Otep. "I'll..be over...in a bit.."
Otep heard her phone go off. She checked the message right away. Thank god. "Ok." she replied.
Jem just got quite herself after all this. 'i'm not..giving up on my dreams. My dreams..might have altered a bit. But...I'm not throwing my life away. I'm adding to it." she said softly. "Just..can't you be happy for me?" she frowned wiping her eyes and walking out of the room to find her keys and such. She was going to head over to Otep's. She needed out of this house.
Otep waited patiently. "Otep sit down." Lisa said. Ok... not so patiently. She was pacing the floor - if she did it any longer there would be a burn track where she had been pacing back and forth.
Jem's parents did not say anything to her last statement. They just sat there. That shocked look on thei faces still. Jem walked out. Getting her keys and getting into her car. She wiped her eyes. Not wanting to look like a mess when she saw Otep. She headed over to her place. It didnt take her all that long to get there. She took in a breath and headed up to the apartment.
Otep huffed again as she looked at the door that DIDN'T have Jem coming through it. "Otep... SIT."
Jem stood on the other side of the door. Smoothing out her clothes running her fingers through her hair quickly. She reached out and knocked. She knew she probably didn't have to knock, but she did anyway.
Otep practically ran to the door and jerked it open. She didn't hesitate to pull Jem into the apartment and into a hug.
Jem didn't know what hit for a moment it all happened so fast. She wrapped her arms around Otep and hugged her tightly. Putting her head down on her shoulder.
Otep kissed her head gently. "Damn it." she whispered.
Jem lifted her head up after a moment. "I'm not...really sure what happened back there." she looked a little confused.
Otep shook her head. "What do you mean?"
Jem shrugged and pulled out of the embrace. "My mom..cried, and yelled. She blamed herself. Thinking she did something wrong to make me like this. My dad..thinks I'm just rebelling and going throgh a phase." she rolled her eyes. "They...also said...they won't permit me to move out of the house...not until I'm 18. At which time...if this is still something I'm going thorugh..then...it's my choice. And I got the whole...I'm nto too young to know what love is ...and...I'm not to have you in the house..at all."
Otep shook her head. "Ok... fine... but... what about you at my house?" she asked. And that didn't leave out her sneaking in the window... like she did before.
"That part was never discussed....I think...they kind of put as this is my choice, but not to bring it into their home...But I spend most of time here anyway...so, what's the difference really going ot be?"
Otep just nodded. "Ok... then... another step at another time." she said quietly.
Jem nodded. "Yeah, another step for another time."
Otep looked into her fiancee's eyes. "I love you.. no matter what." she told her. Lisa came over to them... placing a hand on Jem's shoulder. "And so do I." she said.
Jem turned and gave Lisa a real hug. "Thank you for being so wonderful." she smiled and then she looked back at Otep. "I love you too."
Otep let a tear fall but turned quickly before Jem could see it. She
walked to the kitchen and leaned against the sink before opening the refridgerator and getting a bottle of water out. Whatever was left in "the box" as Otep called it.
Jem watched Otep turn and then walk off. She glanced at Lisa. A kind of *what was that about?* look on her face. Should she go after her, or just let her be?
Lisa shrugged her shoulders and shook her head. She had no idea. "She'd been pacing the floor the WHOLE time."
Jemima bit her lip and still wondered what she should do. "Oh...hmm.."
Lisa looked over to Jem. Otep leaned against the sink, facing toward the wall not to Jem. She felt her heart breaking... no matter how happy she should still be over the engagement... she managed to come between her family.
Jem frowned. May be she would just give her a little space and let her ...deal with whatever it was she was dealing with at the moment.
A few more tears fell before she wiped her face and walked into her room to put a few more things in the boxes. She was quiet... she turned on her music... trying to drown out her thoughts.
This was more awkward then the silence at home. At least she knew what it was all about. She didn't know what had come over Otep. She looked at lisa. "I think...may be I should go. Give her..some space. I think I'm just..going to drive around for a bit..if you'll just tell her where I went."
Lisa shook her head. Not so sure that was a good idea. "Uhm." she sort of started and then trailed off.
Jem paused and looked at Lisa. She didn't know waht to do here. She didn't want to leave, but she didnt feel ike staying was a good idea either. What was she supposed to do?
"Go... talk to her." Lisa said. "If anyone can calm her down or make her happy it's you." she said. "It seems it's been that way for over a year now."
Did she want to talk? Sometimes...she jsut wanted to be left alone. Jem sighed and headed down the hall towards Otep's room. She stood outside on the other side of the door. Knocking softly..."Otep..."
Otep quickly wiped her tears. She was gathering her thoughts. She walked over to the door and opened it. "Hey. Sorry. Come... in."
Jem stood there for a moment. She could tell she was upst and had been crying. She frowned. 'Are you ok? what...happened to you back there?"
"I just... I mean... I know we went over this already. But... I feel like it's my fault that you're having these problems." Otep frowned.
Jem looked at her. "NO, this is not your fault. Honestly...this went better t han I thought. Ok..so they told me they won't allow me to move out or not to have you in *their* home, but they at least didn't kick me out...and they aren't forcing me to end things with you."
Otep nodded as she let the tears fall in front of Jem. She turned away and shook her head, putting her hands on her face.
Jem walked up behind her and put her arms around her. "Hey...it's ok. "
Otep turned in Jem's arms. She put her own arms around her. "I just... I hate feeling like it's all because of me." she said shaking her head. "I just... wish they took it a little better but... not everyone can be like my mom." she said. "At least they didn't hog tie you and string you up over a fire." she said at an attempt to bring the Otep Jem knew back. Not the sad one.
Jem wrapped her up in her arms and hugged her. she rubbed her back. "yeah not everyone can be like your mom..." she smiled. "But may be with some time..they can not necessirly accept it, but at leat...support it. Or something..to that affect."
Otep smiled gently. "Cest La Vie." she said gently. "I love the way you make me feel... and how you cheer me up."
Jem kissed her head and hugged her tighter still. "I love you...and if they would take the time to get to know you..they would see you for who you are just as I do>"
Otep gave her a smile. "I'd hate to think about what she thinks about me now to have to grow to like me." she said with a smirk.
"Don't worry about it. What really matters is what I think."
Otep nodded at that. "It is... and... I'm glad you are mine." she whispered. She pulled Jem into a heartfelt kiss.
She wrapped her arms around her neck and kissed her, then held her fave, caressing her cheek. "Always...and till time stops."
Otep let her tears fall one last time as she felt herself become more comfortable. "forever." she whispered/
Jem brushed the tears away and kissed her nose. "Forever.." she nodded.
Otep smiled at her as she felt her comfort level rise. She looked around her packed room. "I did all this while I was waiting for you to... come out of a metaphoric coma."
Jem looked around the room and laughed. "Oh my....gods." she shook her ehad. "I take it...you offically have the house then. Or were you planning on skipping town?"
"Uh well... skipping town seems like a good idea with your mom on my ass." Otep joked. "But... I got the house. Signed for it today." she smiled.
