Jem had gone home after spending the afternoon with Otep. She walked into the house and put her things on the counter and headed through the house looking for her parents. She found them in the den. She stepped in and stood in the door way. “Mom…dad…” she said softly. Feeling like a bundle of nerves. She had never felt this nervous before. Both her parents’ heads turned when she spoke. They just looked at her. “We see you finally decided to come home, and grace us with your presence.” Her mother muttered in a tone that was both hurt and unhappy. “Where have you been? As if I have to ask…” she frowned, a look coming over her face that worried Jem slightly. “I was…out with a friend. And I decided to stay at her place last night.” Her mother’s face got this disappointed look or something. She couldn’t quite read it.
“A friend?” she shook her head. “That same…*girl* who came to the house…that…freak of a girl.” Jem took a step into the room further. “She is NOT a freak. You do NOT know her, don’t you dare talk about her like that. When you don’t even know her!” she snapped, feeling her blood boil. Jem’s father shot his daughter a stern look. “Jemima…you will not speak to your mother like that. Speak with some respect…young lady.” Jem took in a breath and let it out slowly. “Respect? She had no respect for Otep…judging her the way she did.”
“Both of you…just…stop.” Her mother chimed in. “Jemima…we moved here to start a new live for this family. To give everyone a new beginning and a chance to fulfill dreams. And…I’ve seen you begin to throw your dreams away. For this *friend*.” She looked so sad, tears in her eyes. “This is not just a friend is it? Tell me the truth? How long..has it been…more than friends.” Jemima looked down, she bit her lip. “No, it’s not just…friends. We’ve been together….over a year now.” She said softly. “We’re in love.” Her mother scoffed at that.
“In love? Jemima…you’re still on sixteen years old. You don’t know what love is…and with another girl? You don’t know..what you’re doing.” Her father walked over and put a hand on his wife’s shoulder. “You’re mother is right. You don’t know…what love is. This is just…you’re rebelling against us for something, you’re going through an experimental phase.” He sighed, not believing his daughter could…be telling them she was in love with another girl.
“Where did we go wrong? What did I do wrong as a mother to make you…like this?” her mother sniffed as her husband handed her a tissue.
Jem walked over kneeling in front of her mom. “Mom..you did nothing wrong. You didn’t make me..like this. This is. just who I am. It’s not..a phase, it’s not rebellion. I love her, she makes me happy. I want to be with her…” She put her hands on one of her mothers. Her mother looked down, seeing the ring. “OH MY GOD! That’s not what I think it is, is it?” Jem looked down and nodded. “Yeah..it is. She asked, I said yes.” Her mother’s hand flew to her mouth. “No…this..can’t be happening. Not..my daughter.” She began sobbing.
Jem brushed away a few tears of her own. “Mom…this is true. “ she frowned. “She’s asked….me…to live with her too…”
“I will NOT allow that.” Her father chimed in. Her mother nodded in silence. “Jemima…you are our daughter. We don’t..agree with these choices you’re making. You are throwing away everything you have worked so hard for. We can’t…force you to make…the choices we would prefer. We can’t..support this….but if this is what you have chosen…then that’s what you have chosen. You are sixteen…we will not permit you to move out of this house….when you turn 18…and this has not past and you decide to leave we won’t stop you. But you will not move out of this house , and you WILL NOT have that girl in our home.”
Ok, what exactly did this mean? They weren't relaly going to support her, but they weren't going to make her not see Otep? She nodded and wenr to text or call Otep or something.
