People were pumped up to get to the field after school but Haden was glad the weekend was here. The mama's boy in him wanted to just go back home and spend some quality time with his mother. Another part of him though wanted to go out with his mates. Get a drink, maybe get lucky who knows? "Haden! You're not going to the game?" a girl from his Statistics class asked. He gave her a grin and shook his head. "Got other plans. Have fun for me." The girl shrugged with a smile before walking off.
He got to the entrance to find his chauffeur Jack was already waiting for him. The good looking son of a bitch was getting attention from the girls and Haden smirked. Jack was not much older than Haden and he was a new addition to the staff at his home. "Good evening Mr Kiley." And he liked to do the chauffeur bit a little too much. Haden didn't mind, Jack was kind of like a big brother he never thought he wanted and he did crack Haden up so he was cool. Not that he was going to admit to it.
"Your dad's actually asked for you to join him for dinner." Haden looked at Jack with a quizzical look and shrugged before slipping into the silver Lexus. Jack climbed into the driver's seat and drove in the direction of home. "Did he say why?" Haden asked, wondering what his father would want. They got along famously and Haden was always happy whenever he got to meet up with his father but most of the time, there was always an ulterior motive behind requests like this.
"He didn't tell me, Mr Kiley. I bet he just misses his only child." Jack smiled intot he rearview mirror to which Haden chuckled. The rest of the drive was a silent one with just the stereo playing a Beethoven classic. Jack had to wake Haden up when they arrived. The dark haired young man noted his mother's absence as an anomaly. She was usually around to greet him from school. Shaking his head, he went up and showered before getting dressed immaculately as always in a dark blue and white pinstripe button down shirt with black pants and black dress shoes.
Walking down, he saw his mother just coming in. She looked surprised to see him dressed up. "Going to a party?" she smiled as she took off her earrings and shoes. Haden shook his head. "Dad wants to have dinner." He adjusted his wrist cuffs before running his hand through his hair. "Do I look okay?" His mother gave him a look that said: Duh. She motioned for him to come over before she ruffled his hair. "Mother!"
Jacinda giggled before straightening it up. "You're just like him. So vain."
"It's really isn't my fault I have your looks, mom."
"Oh my God, get out of here!" Jacinda laughed as she beat him out of the door playfully. Haden chuckled before pecking his mother quickly on the cheek. The drive to the swanky restaurant his father had picked out was a silent one as well up until Jack opened the door and asked if he should wait for Haden but the younger man refused, wishing Jack a good evening.
Tipping his hat, Jack drove off in a blur. Haden shook his head before turning to enter the restaurant. "Reservations under Kiley." He informed the maitre'd who had someone promptly escort Haden to the table holding his courtly father who was in a business suit. Christopher Kiley smiled and got up to pull Haden in a tight hug and a handshake. "You're looking good, Haden." He complimented his progeny. Despite growing up with a callous and unloving father, Christopher was affectionate with his son. He never believed the tough love spiel and to him, he and Jacinda did a swell job in bringing Haden up.
That is of course because Christopher had no idea of Haden's indiscretions. Although being a Kiley, it wouldn't be a surprise if Christopher would more likely pat Haden on the back for his conquests than ground him for life. "Thank you dad. You too." Haden smiled and looked at his dad. For a fourty odd year old man, Christopher looked rather young. Haden had more of his mother's looks but there were distinctive features of his father that Haden took on.
"I should hope so." The elder Kiley chuckled before looking down at his menu. "I hope you didn't have any prior plans tonight?" Christopher spoke as he perused the cuisine list. "Well, I was going to spend the night at this really beautiful woman's house. You know her...Jacinda something..." Christopher looked at his son and chuckled. "Ever the joker." He shook his head before setting his menu down. "Are you ready to order?"
The night sailed smooth as it always did and by the time dessert rolled around, Haden was still waiting on the reason why he was having dinner with his father. When his blueberry crumble pie came [by his father's recommendation] Haden was instructed to eat it with the bowl of fresh came that arrived just seconds after the pie.
"This isn't too bad but dad...you didn't ask me out for dinner just to try the fresh cream." Haden gave his old man a little smirk. Christopher looked at his only son and held a carbon copy smirk on his own face. "I don't need my son getting smart on me. Why did I agree to send you to school again?" Haden shrugged at his father's reply. "I'm wondering that myself. So...don't shirk away from the real reason you asked me here."
Christopher threw his napkin on the dining table and leaned back on his chair. "Before you hear it from anybody else, I'm seeing someone." The news didn't strike Haden as a surprise. The man was rich, handsome and charismatic. There was bound to be someone attracted to him some time. But there was no denying that Haden thought that his father should go back to his mother. If not to be a family again, at least so his mother wouldn't be doing the exact same thing by dating a random stranger.
"You don't seem surprised." Christopher bore a little smile on his face. "That's because I'm not." Haden responded as he pushed away his empty plate. "It's been almost a decade since you started dating. Gotta be honest, I was actually hoping it was because you still held a torch for mom." Haden admitted. There were no pretenses between Haden and his father. To be perfectly honest, while most of his peers had a hard time seeing eye to eye with their parents, Haden ironically had a perfectly companionable relationship with his. They were, in all aspects, his best friends. The only thing he kept from them was his conquests.
"You know your mom and I are just friends now."
"I'm your son, I can only hope."
"Does she talk about me that way?" It was out of curiosity that Christopher asked and Haden could see that there wasn't anything more than that. "Not really. She just thinks I'm becoming more like you everyday." Haden explained with a grin. "You can only hope." His father smirked.
"Is she someone I know?" Haden asked, out of sheer curiosity. "I'm not going to say. I don't even know if it's going anywhere. I just wanted you to know before you read it somewhere else."
"I don't read the news, you know that."
"That's my boy. Will you be okay going home?"
"I know my way around," Haden nodded before signaling for the waiter to send the check over. Christopher took out a few fifty dollar bills and slid it across to Haden who pocketed it. "You haven't been over to the house lately. You should come by." Christopher said as he paid the bill, leaving a hefty tip before standing up along with Haden.
The two walked to the exit and Haden waited until the valet sent his father's sleek Mercedes Benz. "I'll come by next week maybe." They shook hands and said their goodbyes before Haden walked off home.
