Astor smiled as she stared at her own image in the mirror. Parted in the middle, her long blonde hair had been freshly highlighted and she’d curled the ends to give her hair a bounce. Her makeup was simple but lovely with curled, dark lashes, pink cheeks and glossed lips. She was dressed in a lace T-shirt, layered overtop a camisole and paired with a patterned miniskirt and cute platform ankle boots. She looked perfect. Today was the first day of her freshman year of high school and everything was about to change. No more geeky/shy Astor. No, starting today, Astor would be a force to be reckoned with. She was even going to eat breakfast.
Astor walked downstairs in her mother’s house. Her mother was in the kitchen, busy tossing out the contents of their fridge. “Mom…what are you doing?”
“This routine liposuction is a killer. We need to diet, kid. I can’t keep affording this just because I don’t want to give up food. Everything changes today!” Astor’s mother said confidently. “Here, look here’s some low fat yogurt. We should split it…are you sure that skirt isn’t too short…you don’t want everyone seeing your thighs squash together when you sit down,” she pointed out.
And suddenly, all Astor’s confidence crumbled as it had so many times before. “You’re right…I should….change. And I’m not hungry. You eat the yogurt,” Astor said, quickly hurrying back up to her room. Once there, she kicked off her shoes and stripped off her clothes, leaving them in a pile on the floor. She grabbed an old fitted white T-shirt which was a size too big, thus not fitted on Astor and the first pair of jeans she could find: paint splattered skinny jeans, also a size too big so while not baggy, had a looser fit than was intended. She then slipped her feet into a pair of navy Tom’s shoes slip on sneakers and pulled her hair back into a low ponytail.
As she looked in the mirror once more, she saw the same geeky Astor that she looked at every day. Some things never changed. She let out a sigh as she grabbed her bag and headed back downstairs, this time bypassing the kitchen and simply yelled, “I’m going!” to her mother before she left.
Astor climbed onto her bicycle and began peddling to school which wasn’t too far away. Upon arriving at the crowded high school, she looked around at all the students abuzz with chatter about their summers. The girls were so pretty and the boys so good looking…so perfect that they had to be the popular kids…something Astor would never be. She tried not to stare as she parked her bike at the bike rack and locked it up accordingly.
She bit down on her bottom lip nervously as she entered the building and began to search for her locker.
