Kayla had been very troubled lately. Her troubles had been brewing for awhile. It wasn't exactly a recent development in Kayla's life. She'd been noticing girls for awhile now. It was just that recently she'd been admitting it more and more to herself. She liked girls. The problem was, that she hadn't admitted it to anyone else yet. She was afraid to! After all, what would her friends say? She wasn't so much worried about what the boys would say...they'd probably just tease her or something and she could take it. It was the girls she was worried about. Would they assume Kayla was harboring crushes on them? Because she so wasn't! Well, not all of them.
It only added to the confusion when she saw Amy kissing that girl! Kayla and Amy had been growing closer and closer as friends. They were now hanging out quite regularly and most of the time all Kayla could think about was that kiss! Had Amy just been experimenting or did she actually like kissing girls? And if she was experimenting or liked kissing girls, why hadn't she asked Kayla? Kayla would have obviously obliged!
And then Amy was going to prom with a boy. Was she bisexual? Or was she straight? Or was she gay? Kayla really wanted to know because it was driving her nuts and the poor girl was too shy to admit these things, even though she and Amy were good friends now.
So she ran it off. Her long brown hair was pulled back into a pony tail and dressed in a pair of light blue running shorts and a white tank top, her navy sports bra peaking out underneath. She ran by the beach, running faster and faster, the wind whipping through her hair and the salt hair making her mind clearer...okay not really, but it least made her temporarily forget.
Stopping she needed a break. She'd been running a long time and she inhaled deeply, already feeling better. She pulled out her cell only to see a missed call from Amy. Kayla let out a sigh and bit down on her lower lip as she hit the dial back, silently hoping that the girl who confused her so much didn't pick up.

Figuring she needed a break from her practice, Amy's stomach growled at an opportune time. Grabbing her basketball from the ground, she stuffed it into her gym bag and took out her cell phone to call someone to grab a quick breakfast with her. Scrolling through her phone book, she narrowed her candidates to Miquel, Kayla and Christophe. Miquel was probably sleeping right then and Christophe probably already had plans which left Amy with Kayla who was probably outside anyway.
The two had become close friends over the past months and day by day, it was too obvious that Amy was very attracted to the shy girl. Despite having a quasi relationship with Miquel and actually going to prom tonight with her best friend, there was no denying that Amy didn't feel with Miquel what she felt with Kayla. It wasn't love, that much was obvious. But the feeling was strong either way. Amy had been wanting to just grab the girl and kiss her but she didn't want to freak the girl out.
So she just released her pent up frustration on Miquel during their evening trysts. It helped a bit but she still felt that she could feel even better. Shaking those thoughts out of her head, she pressed the call button and was directed to voicemail but she didn't leave a message, thinking Kayla was still running. But not five minutes later while Amy was set to get her breakfast by herself, her phone rang and caller ID indicated that it was Kayla.
Answering the phone, Amy kicked her bike off its stand and held it up with her leg. "Hey Kay." Amy smiled. "I called earlier. Wanted to see if you were hungry. We could grab a bite?"

Kayla smiled at the sound of Amy's voice. She hadn't really felt this way in awhile and it wasn't something that she was used to...getting all giddy over someone. The thought that she might have a crush on the girl was somewhat beyond her. While she was recognizing that she liked girls, she was still working out the part about liking Amy in particular. As far as she was concerned the only reason she thought about Amy that way was because she saw her kissing a girl. That was all because Kayla couldn't have a crush on one of her friends. That was just wrong...and what worried her most. Girls not wanting to be her friend anymore if she admitted it.
"Yes," she answered automatically when Amy asked if she wanted to grab breakfast with her. Realizing she sounded over eager, she blushed, glad that Amy wasn't there to see her right now, she quickly covered for herself. "I'm starving," she said, which was a half lie. She was getting hungry but she certainly wasn't starving. "I was just running though so I hope you don't mind if I'm a little gross...I'm...not far from my bike. Where did you want to meet up? I'm by the beach closest to my house right now but I can ride my bike to wherever," she told the other girl.
Kayla knew that Amy was going to the prom with Miquel that evening so she hadn't really expected to hear from her. She'd figured she'd be busy getting her hair done and all that like the other girls although Kayla probably should have known that Amy wouldn't be acting like the other girls regarding prom. That's part of the reason why Kayla enjoyed hanging out with Amy. She wasn't super girls or obsessed with guys or anything like that.
"So...where would you like to meet up?" Kayla asked, already walking in the direction of her bicycle. She'd run to it as soon as she got off the phone but trying to run and talk on the phone at the same time was difficult so she just walked for now. She hadn't quite been finished with her run...she'd wanted to make it a little farther, however if getting breakfast with Amy wasn't a good excuse to stop early, Kayla didn't know what was.

Smiling at the eagerness of Kayla's voice, Amy didn't read further into it. It was probably her overimagining things anyway. With a snort of laughter, Amy shook her head. "Kayla, you can never be gross." She admitted unabashedly. "I on the other hand...might be. Okay so I know it shouldn't be my first choice but I think I deserve a McDonalds breakfast this morning. I got up extra early today and have been running and training til now."
Amy got on her bike and started pedaling to where Kayla said she was. Having been to her house a couple of times, Amy roughly knew where Kayla was. "I'm like five minutes away from you. I'll go to you and we'll find the nearest Mickey D's." She adjusted her bag strap and pedaled a little faster. "So I'll see you. Kay? Bye." She hung up and sped to Kayla's location. In less than five minutes, she saw Kayla in her blue shorts and tank top.
Slowing down slightly, Amy braked right behind Kayla, tapping her on her shoulder. "Hey Kayla."

Kayla ran to where her bike was and unlocked it. She hopped on and peddled furiously to the closest McDonalds. Kayla wasn't really a fan of fast food, but she didn't mind having it every now and then. And if that's what Amy wanted, Kayla was more than happy to have some. Plus, breakfast fast food was better than normal fast food anyway.
Kayla reached the place first she presumed. Or at least she didn't see Amy. She knelt down on the ground to lock up her bike on a parking sign when she felt the tap on her shoulder and heard Amy's voice. Kayla whipped around, still flushed from rushing over so quickly. "Hey," she said, pushing some stray hairs behind her ear.
She smiled at the blonde. "I haven't had McDonald's breakfast in so long," she said. "I'm surprised that you're around today. I figured you'd be getting all ready for prom and stuff..." she said trailing off. Once again all she could think about was kissing Amy...or asking her about kissing girls. But she wasn't sure how she was even supposed to bring that up or if she should. Amy was her friend, she should have been able to ask her but she was afraid that it would ruin everything.

Amy helped with the stray hairs on Kayla and smiled at her. "You don't look gross at all, Kay." She parked her bike beside Kayla's and gestured for Kayla to follow her to the fast food restaurant. "Hey, it's not healthy. You should never eat it in excess." Amy said but didn't manage to keep a straight face. She liked fast food only because she knew she could burn them right off her. Besides, appearances wasn't everything to her.
Prom... "Aie...please. All I need to do is pull my hair up in a ponytail and get a dress on. I'm not much of a preparer perse." She shrugged and opened the door for Kayla to go through first with her trailing behind her. "You want to order first then find a place or you wanna sit and I order or I sit and you order? Either way I'm good." She smiled at Kayla, before her eyes involuntarily dropped down to her chest and back up again.
She hoped Kayla didn't notice that.

Kayla sort of froze up when Amy pushed the hair out of her face. It just seemed like sort of an intimate action...something you'd only do to someone you were more than friends with. But maybe Kayla just truly did look like a mess and Amy was trying to help so she wouldn't be embarrassed being seen with her. Even if she did say otherwise. "That's surprising," Kayla said, "after all, I have been running...but I guess I haven't looked in a mirror lately," she shrug. She still felt gross...all sweaty and overheated.
Kayla smirked too. It was clear that Amy was less cautious about what she ate. Kayla wasn't like a super health nut or anything...and she certainly wasn't the type to shun healthy food because she thought it would make her fat or anything like that. She just liked the way healthy foods made her feel. They made her feel more energized while fast food tended to make her feel like a blob that didn't want to move. But now matter, she'd get a light breakfast...a breakfast sandwich...a hash brown...some orange juice...she'd be fine.
"Yeah I guess not," Kayla said. "I'd probably be the same way if I was going...just a ponytail and a dress," she admitted, only Kayla wasn't going since she was a sophomore and hadn't been asked. Not that she minded. Kayla didn't like boys so much.
"We can just both order, then find a seat," she said, noticing Amy look at her chest, but ignoring it figuring it was her mind playing tricks on her.

Noticing the sudden change in Kayla, Amy stepped back and acted like nothing had happened while they walked to the fast food restaurant. "Well, I've seen gross and you don't even come close." Amy shrugged and when they finally agreed on an arrangement, Amy stood in line with Kayla beside her. The blonde scrutinised the menu board and quickly decided on their unhealthiest selection.
"So will you be attempting the inter-school cross country marathon coming up soon? I think I heard Sloane Taylor was one of the representatives." The little fact was only known because of the group of friends she hung out with who were on track. Some of the girls Amy knew were fans of the redhead track team star and some were wary of her. Amy didn't know which one she fell under. Sloane was surely attractive but her reputation preceded her and Amy wasn't sure if she wanted to get a reputation by association.
"Wait, you're not going to prom?" Amy asked as the line inched forward. "I can't believe no one's asked." She shook her head in disbelief. Were boys blind? If Amy had the attention of someone like Christophe Broussard, she couldn't believe that Kayla wasn't at least attracting a dozen other boys even more good looking than Christophe.
When they finally got to order, the cashier took Amy's order with a shy smile before turning to Kayla with an ever shier smile. "And you?"
Amy waited as Kayla ordered and they were both directed to the side to wait for their order. Amy smiled at Kayla as she leaned against the counter. "What are your plans today?"

"Yeah, I'm running in that," Kayla said, finding it interesting that Amy had chose to mention Sloane. Kayla hadn't really known who she was until the schools merged but she'd easily overheard rumors about how Sloane liked to sleep with both boys and girls. Kayla wasn't really interested in people that slept around but she had to admit the girls part of the equation had her curious and she'd be lying if she said she hadn't thought about it with Sloane, who was very pretty. But Kayla was fairly certain that she'd never go there. "Are you friends with Sloane?" Kayla asked. "I don't really know her..." Maybe Amy fooled around with Sloane just like she had with that girl Kayla had saw her with. Oh...well kissing...that's all she saw...that they did more than kissing was just Kayla's imagination.
"You're joking right?" Kayla asked when Amy seemed shocked she wasn't going to prom. "Of course no one asked. Most of the people I know are sophomores anyway, accept for you. I'm glad no one asked though, I don't think I'd want to go with a boy," she said, "from school," she added quickly. "There are just no boys in school that I like," she attempted, pretty sure that she hadn't completely gave herself away.
Amy ordered and then looked to Kayla to order as if she was paying or something. Okay....Amy ordered one of the combos getting orange juice instead of coffee and then move to the side with Amy. "Thanks," she said, "next one's on my," she smiled. "I don't really have plans for today," she said with a shrug.

"Looks like I'm going to have to come now." Amy grinned. She wondered if Kayla realised that Amy was flirting with her. Did the girl even know what flirting looked like? She threw the ludicrous thought out of her head. Kayla probably didn't like girls as much as Amy did. What was she doing? The girl wasn't gay! Amy bit her lower lip and looked away as Kayla spoke. "Uh, naw. Well not close friends. I just know her in passing. I hear things about her is all." She shrugged.
Frowning at Kayla's disbelief at her question, Amy shook her head. "No I'm not joking." She mumbled and looked down at her shoes up until there was a hesitation in Kayla's voice. Amy looked up with a smile forcing its way on to her lips but she curbed it, not wanting Kayla to think anything of it. It probably meant nothing, the hesitation. It could have just been a slip of her tongue.
"Nah, keep your money. I'm cool." She grinned and took the tray with her food before handing some money to the cashier and waved at him. "Thanks." She walked in the direction of the tables with Kayla in tow. "You don't?" Amy slid into one of the back seats, grabbing her drink. "Wanna hang until I absolutely have to go to prom?" She asked, sipping her drink.
