Lily Spencer stood at her locker. She was quite apprehensive really. It was a few days until prom, which was something the sophomore never thought she’d be concerned with. But here she was, a few days till prom, stressing out because the very good looking junior boy that she’d been hanging out with…learning to surf from….taken snowboarding….gone on four dates with, still hadn’t asked her to be his date. She hadn’t heard that Haden Kiley was taken anyone else. In fact she hadn’t heard about him going on dates with anyone else, although Lily was smart enough to know that there was no way she was the only girl he was seeing. He was popular and good looking and she was, well her. She was shy and awkward and too muscular for a girl. He probably didn’t even like her in that way. He probably just thought it was cool that she was a pro-snowboarder or maybe he was just having a joke out of it all. She wasn’t sure but it had to be something. There was no way he could actually like her the way that she liked him. Her blonde hair was worn down and she was dressed in a pair of denim shorts and a red tank top due to the Spring heat. Okay…maybe she’d shown a little more skin than she liked to for his sake. A stupid…stupid thing considering he was probably buying tickets to prom right now with some perky and perfect cheerleader on his arm. Guys like that just didn’t go for girls like her and she had been silly for thinking he ever would. Lily grabbed a cardigan out of her locker, determined to cover up a bit, since her efforts had been useless anyway. With her sweater now in hand she shut her locker to see Haden standing there. She smiled, her cheeks flushing as she looked up at him. “Hey,” she said. “What’s up? Are we still on for surfing sometime this week?” she asked, trying to keep it casual and play it cool. Tags

Arriving in school with a lot of time to spare, Haden slipped a free hand into his jeans pocket to make sure the pair of tickets for prom were still there. As he walked down the hall with his first period books in one hand and the other in his pocket, he passed a few girls who looked at him with a huge anticipatory smile. He nodded at a few of them who shyly looked away and noted how many of the smiles turned into disappointed frowns. Prom was in a few more days and he was only concerned with one girl. He hated to disappoint the girls he was passing by but he found that his investment in that one girl was about to pay off.
And by the looks of her in that red tank top and denim shorts, it wasn't too long until Lily Spencer turned into the girl she could be. He sure knew how to pick them it seems. Lily was the second girl Haden had invested in, so unsure of her own beauty and lacked confidence despite being excellent company with an interesting personality. And to think he thought he liked confident strong girls more before. Having a girl lacking confidence seemed to be more of a challenge to court and Lily was not disappointing.
She was growing by the day and the dates they've had were memorable to Haden. Yet he still couldn't conjure a decent emotion to label what he felt for Lily other than pride. He was like a proud teacher or a coach and he was seeing his student succeed. It was cold and clinical but Haden had never been good with emotions, had he? Sure he felt a certain amount of affection towards the attractive blonde, how could he not? She was quite sweet, hanging on to his every word and trying to impress him. And she was a fast learner, something that was quite a turn on for him, seeing a girl on a surfboard.
As he stood there, taking in the blush and the smile with his own smile, he was quite sure Lily wouldn't say no when he asked her to go to the prom. Her seemingly casual tone was anything but casual through Haden's trained ears. He let it slide and nodded. "Yeah sure... Maybe Sunday. But I'm not sure, I might have plans over the weekend." He kept his grin in check. He didn't want to give anything away. "Red looks good on you..." he leaned forward with his hand stretched out to pull one strap of the top and letting it fall. He slid the same hand down her bare arms.
He frowned just slightly before taking the sweater from her hands. He'd seen her in far less but somehow, seeing her bare some skin in school felt a lot more revealing than on the beach. It made him feel rather protective of her all of a sudden. Like he didn't want any other guy feasting their eyes on her. So he draped the cardigan around her shoulders and took a step back. "Don't show too much in school..." he said, his voice taking on a tone he wasn't sure he liked.

It was weird. It was like things were different in school then they were on the beach or at the other places they went. It seemed that when they weren't in school...when they weren't surrounded by their peers it was easier to calm down...be herself even, in front of the dark haired boy that she had seriously been crushing on since they had met. But in school...she just felt all worked up about it. Perhaps its because she felt like everyone was judging them...silently thinking that she didn't deserve him...or perhaps it was because school was a huge reminder that he wasn't even her's to begin with. Either way, Lily felt jittery like she'd had too many cups of coffee even though she hadn't had even one.
It didn't really help either that her heart completely sunk when he mentioned plans for this weekend. She was certain they were prom plans, which meant that he wasn't taking her. He'd probably had asked someone else ages ago and she hadn't even known. Plus, Lily didn't have a prom dress...she wasn't really so good at dressing up anyway. He probably sensed that...wanted someone prettier, more girly on his arm. "Oh...okay. I guess let me know if you can make it Sunday...otherwise I'm sure we can find sometime..." Since snowboarding season was now officially over, Lily had more time for surfing. Sure, she still went to the indoor half pipe for practice a few times a week, but there was still much more free time for the during the off season. Plus, she was due for a break since she'd be spending a good portion on her summer training on the alps as she did every year.
"Uh...thanks..." she said sort of trailing off when he complimented the color she was wearing, watching his finger trail her skin it was like a burst of electric energy running through her. A simple touch that was probably insignificant was what she'd hold on to. They hadn't done much passed kissing, but she did want to do more. She realized that he was probably way more experienced than her...that he probably didn't want to deal with doing more with a girl of such limited experience, but the problem was that she really wanted to be with him. She knew that it probably made her pathetic, crushing after a boy who probably didn't care, but she couldn't help it. She wasn't really used to the sort of attention he gave her and she liked it. She liked it a lot.
She wasn't sure what he was going to do when he took her sweater, and was a little surprised when he draped it over her shoulders telling her not to show to much. Lily just looked at him for a moment, feeling somewhat like a child being scolded for doing something wrong. She'd thought that he'd liked her top...but she'd messed it all up she guessed. "Right," she said, "that's why I brought the sweater...I was just about to put it on...I was just warm," she explained, hoping he wasn't upset with the way she was dressed. It was an odd feeling as she normally paid no attention to the way she dressed at all. She'd make sure to go back to wearing T-shirts in school though, saving tank tops for the beach.

"Yeah, I'll text you." Haden responded to her concern for surfing. Her disappointment was pretty obvious to him and it amused him to see how worked up a girl can be for one day to be all dolled up and dance. Personally, Haden would have just simple forgone the whole shindig had it not been for Lily. He would have been just happy sitting at home, watching old Tarantino movies.
"It looks good on you, don't get me wrong it's just...not appropriate for you to be bearing too much skin in school." The dark haired junior replied when Lily gave him an upset look as she stumbled over her explanation. "You don't want to end up like those girls on TMZ do you?" Haden realised he was being patronising towards Lily, like he was slapping her wrist for being petulant.
"You're far too special to want to be like those trashy girls." He cupped one of her cheeks and rubbed his thumb over her cheekbones. With a smile he planted a kiss on her forehead. It was more for her than for him. He found that it took a lot less effort to be charming than being aggressive. It also resulted in having the girl turn into putty in his hand.
He stepped back and gave Lily another smile. "Do you have any plans for the weekend?" He asked in return. It might throw her off his scent if he acted more casual about it, like prom was not on the forefront of his mind, let alone wanting her to be his date.

Lily nodded when he vaguely said he'd text her. She wasn't expecting a text. She wasn't really expecting anything. Now convinced that he already had big prom plans with some girl that wasn't her, she figured that there was little chance she'd see him at all over the weekend. It wasn't as if it was completely new...there were weekends when they hadn't seen one another, although Lily had much preferred the ones when they had.
It wasn't even that she was hung up on going to the actual dance because honestly she didn't care about the dress or the hair or that nails or makeup like most girls were going on about. She didn't really know how to do any of that stuff anyway. It was more the idea of him being there with someone else that she didn't like. She knew that they were in no way exclusive...after all, aside from the surfing lessons and the time she'd taken him snowboarding, actual dates had been few and far between. She wasn't even sure she could consider what they were doing dating. But still, she liked him a lot and she did really wish that he would have picked her to spend the night with.
He went on about the shirt, making her feel smaller and smaller. Honestly, it was a tank top...girls wore tank tops to school all the time...and now she was getting compared to the drunken celebrities on TMZ? Lily didn't even read TMZ but she still knew what it was and what he was referring to. But any resentment she was beginning to feel was quickly doused by the fact that he called her special. She nodded once more and a small smile had reached her lips.
However that smile left as quickly as it came when he asked her about plans. She didn't have any of course as she'd been holding off making any...holding off for him. But she wasn't sure she wanted him to know that. After all, she didn't want him to think she was one of those girls who just waited around for the times he actually wanted to hang out....even though she totally was. "I should probably hit up the indoor half-pipe I go to," she said. "Need to keep up the momentum even during off season," she said, which was actually true. She did need to practice on the half pipe a bit more and it wouldn't hurt to do it this weekend, but it wasn't like it was something she couldn't do just as easily during the week. "I guess I'll probably do that Saturday," she said, wanting to leave Sunday open in case he did want to go surfing.
OOC: Dude it was an awesome reply, plenty for me to reply back to. Don't get caught up on things like word count. That's just silly.

With Lily's smile, Haden took it a sign that he was getting under her skin. It wasn't to the point that she couldn't fathom a life without him but she was halfway there, which was almost as good so he wasn't too worried about it. All he had to do now was build enough suspense to asking her to the prom and he was sure Lily would be his without a doubt.
The business about the tank top was obviously getting to Lily so Haden laid off it and added another compliment for it. It wouldn't do to upset the girl anyway. He wanted her to continue liking him so he had to make her happy and to do that, she didn't need to feel bad about what she wore. It wasn't even a big deal anyway. He just didn't want other guys to look at her the way only he was entitled to look at her.
When she mentioned her plans for Saturday, he couldn't help but give a little smile before masking it with a nod. "Yeah, would be a good thing if you did it over the weekend." He said, leaving the glee out of his voice. But he was done torturing the poor girl. Knowing her, she probably didn't have a dress yet and if he continued putting the invitation off, she won't be able to have enough time to get a good one seeing that prom was a major event and the good dresses were always gone by the last week before the day itself.
"Although Saturday might not be a good day to have plans though. For you, I mean." Her look of confusion made him smirk. Haden took out one ticket from his pocket and handed it to her. "Because if I'm not mistaken that ticket says Saturday...right?" He feigned confusion. "Could you read the date out loud to me? My eyes aren't what they used to be probably."

Lily stood there, still quite enamored by him. Even during the parts where he'd put her down...made her feel bad, all she really only wanted to please him. It was strange really...she'd never really had quite these feelings before. There had been that one boy...the snowboarder she'd liked most of last year....but that had sort of fizzled during the off season. Then there really hadn't been much since then...till Haden. And he'd been so nice...and they spent so much time together...and they had gone on dates, but she thought that perhaps that he wasn't quite as interested in her as she was in him. In fact she knew he wasn't. After all, he did have prom plans with some other girl...or so Lily thought.
Her heart sunk again when he agreed that it was a good idea she get in some practice. It was like every last shred of hope he had was not gone. She felt sort of pathetic really...so intent on going to the prom with him. She was only a sophomore after all. She wasn't supposed to be at the prom. Not to mention that she wasn't supposed to be the girl who lived for a guy. She just wasn't. She was an athlete, a female one...a female snowboarder. She was suppose to be strong and independent...only she wasn't. Not even close.
Then he mentioned Saturday not being a good time and she looked at him rather curiously. He took the ticket out of his pocket, handing it to her. It was clearly a ticket to the prom. She didn't really pay attention when he asked her to read it for him, thinking that just seemed silly and childish and really she was too excited to humor him at the moment. "Is...this for me?" she asked instead.

Her question made him smile affectionately. He took a pen out from his pocket, since he was just way too cool for a pencil case, and wrote Lily's name on the back of the ticket. He deposited his pen in his pocket again and looked at her. "What do you think?" He asked before hooking one finger under her chin, pulling her face up so they were looking at each other. "How about it Lily Spencer. Will you be my date to the prom?" He asked.
It wasn't much of a grand gesture but Haden wasn't that kind of guy. And if Lily was hoping for it, she was probably sorely disappointed. To Haden, Lily was just another girl. His attraction towards her was purely physical. Sure she had an interesting personality but that was it. And this was high school so he wasn't about to kid himself. The girl may be having a huge crush on him but he was just in it for one thing. And it wasn't her personality.
It was a good thing he was patient. It was one of his better traits, apart from being quite charming, if he did say so himself. So if he had to go on a hundred dates with her for her to be completely trusting of him, he was pretty sure he could achieve that. His needs could be satisfied in another way for now. And besides, he wasn't going to make people think he was a sleazy horndog.
To be quite honest, he'd only actually slept with what...five girls in total? The rest of the school population think he's such a playboy because he went out with a lot of girls. And most of those girls were silly gossipmongers and didn't want to lose face with their friends so they say they slept with him and he ditched them. Far be it for him to correct those girls, he just let people think whatever they wanted about him. It was high school. Rumors were what kept the students alive.
"Okay, you don't have to answer now but I'd like to know the color of your dress at least. And your address." He pulled the finger that had hooked under her chin to push a lock of hair behind her ear. "Don't want to pick up the wrong girl for prom now do I?"

Lily watched as he wrote her name on the ticket. Oh! It really was for her! He was really asking her to prom! Maybe he really did like her the same way that she liked him! Suddenly, everything seemed like it would be alright! She was Haden Kiley's date to prom! She nodded her head furiously, "Yes! Of course," she said a bit smile on her face. "I guess I assumed you weren't going to go, or that you'd already asked someone else," she admitted to him as she pushed some of her hair behind her ear.
Really Lily didn't need any grand gesture...just him asking her at all was just so exciting. She couldn't get the smile off of her face even if she tried...which she did because she didn't want him to think she was too excited...she didn't want to turn him off or anything. Thing she was getting clingy. She was pretty certain that boys didn't like that and she only wanted to please him of course.
"Well...yeah...I don't have a dress yet, obviously," Lily said although if she'd been completely honest she'd sort of been peaking in the windows of dress stores just in case. If she'd been a girlier of a girl she might have even tried some one, had something already picked out. But she was Lily and looking at dresses had stressed her out so she really hadn't spent too much time for it. "I can give you my address though," she said. "Is there somewhere I can write it down?" she asked, "or do you just want me to give it to you later...maybe I should text it to you so you just have it," she offered, sort of rambling now, but it was mostly out of excitement. Her heart was still pounding and he wasn't saying that it had all been some big joke so she was pretty sure that this was all real.
She would have to go dress shopping now though...extra stressful as she'd only had a few days to get everything in order. It was times like this that Lily wished she had a good girlfriend to help her but she really didn't. The only girlfriends she really had were snowboarding girls and while even they were probably more inept at this than she was, none of them really lived super close. But perhaps she could still make some calls...get some help.

Raising an eyebrow at Lily when she admitted to her assumption, Haden took his time before smiling again. "Lily, there's really no one else I'd rather go with than you. You should know that." He had to give himself props for going through with this the whole way. If he needed a job later on in life - which in reality he really didn't need to think of, he could be quite a good actor. "I'm quite hurt that you think nothing of the dates we've had for the past few months."
Her excitement showed and Haden was quite glad this was working out. If she had said no...wait who was he kidding, why in the world would she even think of saying no to Haden? He laughed to himself before placing a hand over where her heart should be. It was beating rather erratically. "Calm down, lily pad." He chuckled lowly. "No need to get all jumpy. You can just text me your address later." The bell rang, signaling it was time to get to class. Haden looked at Lily and smiled before dropping his hand to his side.
"I'm having lunch outside later, join me." He suggested as he escorted Lily to her first class. All the way to class, his hand was at the small of her back, letting every guy know that Lily was off the market. And so was Haden. He could feel the glares some girls gave to Lily and he couldn't help but grin to himself.
Once they arrived outside her class, Haden bent down and gave her a light kiss on the lips. "I'll see you later."
