Bree had spend almost an hour working to hide the bruises on her face and throat. Her father had come home early last night from a week long business meeting and discovered that other than school she hadn't left the house at all and that she was skipping an invitation to Jasper's birthday party. After that she knew staying home was not an option, not on a Saturday. She would just have to be invisible in public, not that she didn't do that every school day.
Luckily Bree's father didn't seem to mind the goth look for day time things, for ordinary makeup just wouldn't have covered the dark purple bruises. She dressed in a long black dress that went to below her knees to brush against the top of her granny boots. Her black leather back pack would make packages easier. Checking herself in the mirror one more time to make sure everything was covered, she left.
Bree escaped from the house by telling her father that she was going to meet some friends at the mall. Luckily he believed her and had his own plans. Even though she had no real desire to go to the mall, she would as she couldn't risk him finding her somewhere else. Driving her Audi to the mall, she had some Sonatas by Beethoven playing to soothe her. At least they had a Borders at the mall, she could spend hours in there without any hardship at all. She would have to stop by Hot Topic though and buy a few things too, so her dad would believe she had been with friends. But Borders first, a cup of Chai and a bagel with lox would settle her stomach.
Parking on the side that would be shaded in the afternoon, Bree headed inside and forced herself to move at a normal speed. Too fast or too slow would make her too visible. She didn't meet anyone's eyes but looked straight ahead, though she looked in an occasional window so she wouldn't look like she had a mission or something.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Bree entered the two story Borders and stopped to look at the bargain books to find something to read as she ate breakfast. She found a biography called Wild Harmonies: A Life of Music and Wolves about Helene Grimaud and she paid for it and headed to the coffee shop to get food and her chai.
