The line for cafeteria food crept ahead, though most in the queue didn't mind. Hardly anyone was ever in a hurry to get a school lunch, and Levi was no exception. His stomach was quite complacent at the moment, though he knew if he did not give it a fair offering it would be complaining by the time school let out. So he waited, glancing around the room hoping to spot Denny and an empty seat.
Even better, he spied a familiar female crowned with crimson locks, a head he had spied very often from his bedroom window. She seemed intent upon something, but Levi was on the complete other side of the room and could barely see her face. She had been so kind, bestowing upon him a birthday cake, and a quite funny card about a cake monster. In the past few weeks, it seemed like she had been noticing him more and more, and what was once a fantasy seemed like it could possibly some day come true.
Or not. Levi was watching as his one true love approached a boy, a familiar looking boy. She struck up a conversation, though Levi had no chance of hearing. Concern grew on his face, and for good cause. Levi watched as his redheaded Mary Jane leaned in and kissed his arch-enemy, or so he had quickly become.
To Levi, the world had frozen. His head began to pound and beads of sweat began to appear on his forehead. It had to be a dream, he thought. A million thoughts flew in through his head, most of which dealing with what may have caused his brain to imagine such a horrible situation.
Scant moments felt like an eternity, a lifetime that was suddenly broken by a shove from behind. “Keep movin', dweeb!” demanded a husky voice from behind Levi. It was enough to break his concentration and distract him from the scene. He stumbled forward, not bothering to stay in the line, and quickly tried to resume his viewing of the emotional train wreck that had occurred, but suddenly Sandy was no where to be found. The boy, Dr. Girlstealer, was in a discussion with a different girl who seemed quite agitated. Levi looked all over the cafeteria, but Sandy could no longer be found.
Levi was overcome with a sudden urge to burst into tears. He needed to go home immediately, forever. He never wanted to come back to this horrible place filled with jerks and bullies and people who laughed way too loud. He tried to walk calmly to an exit, but he soon found himself running as fast as he could. He weaved from hall to hall, not thinking of where he was heading, until he burst out the front door. When the sun touched his face, he slowed to a walk until he was far enough away from the school and pulled out his phone. A quick text to his father was sent, and finally Levi's legs gave out underneath him as he stumbled onto the grass and sat there, head on his knees, and let the tears come.
