The relationship between Holly and Slate really had never been put into stone. Slate wanted to change that. He was determined to take Holly out over the weekend, maybe dinner and a movie or something fun, he wasn't sure what at the time though.
He fiddled with his phone trying to think of how to ask her out, just the two of them. He thought for a few moments, then dialed her number. Texting was a tad impersonal.
He leaned against his locker as he listened to her phone send out its magical ring tone. When it finished he left her the message.
"Hey Hol, I was wondering, that is if your aren't busy this weekend or anything, I was wondering if you wanna go out and do something. This'll be my treat. Gimme a call or something and lets set something up." He grimaced as he hung up the phone, for some reason he felt like a fool with the message and how it sounded but the damage was done.
He started getting his books and folder for the first half of the day when there was a light, gentle tap at his shoulder.

Holly was torn. Nick had called her a few days ago and had wanted to talk. After meeting him in the park, he had told her that he had wanted to get back together, that he had paniced about college and being away from her. She hadn't given him an answer. Truth be told, she rather liked someone else. Someone sweet and well mannered, with a really yummy southern accent. Slate was really good, and he made her feel..soft and mushy inside. She loved spending time with him and his siblings. They were a trip.
Holly was at her locker, throwing her books in from the night before. She only had a few classes that day, and it was Friday, plus a pep rally. Pep rallies meant that she was clad in her cheerleader uniform and damn she looked good in it too. She had her hair pulled up in a ponytail, feeling the silken strands brush her shoulders. her cell rang, and she was unable to dig it out of her bag fast enough. A beep alerted her to a voice mail, which she listened to, a smile growing on her full lips.
Holly did not call him back. Instead, she headed away from her locker and walked down the halls until she found where Slte was standing at his. She tapped him on the shoulder, a smile on those perfect lips. "So...this date...is a one on one thing or will there be ankle biters around?" She asked.

"Who, wha..." Slate replied as he turned around to see Holly. His eyes almost popped out of his head seeing her in the cheerleading uniform. "Wow, Holly, you look awesome!" He wanted to kick himself for saying that, still it was better than saying she looked tasty or something that some lecherous troll might say to her.
"The date would just be you and me, no ankle biters this time." He paused for a moment. "I promise!" A goofy grin on his face, thinking how he was lucky to have found someone like Holly.
"Like I said, I'm open for suggestions, dinner and movie was just a thought since its usually the norm." At least that's what most of the guys did that he knew of.
"Looks like you're ready for the pep assembly today." He said even though he had almost forgotten about it himself. 'Y'all will be rockin' the house today but you'll be the one to outshine everyone else." He meant that sincerely.
"I distracted myself, so what works for you? Maybe tonight if you aren't too tired." That was when an idea came to him. "How about I pick up a pizza and we just sit back tonight?"

He made her smile. Yes, she knew that she looked good in her uniform, but it was always nice to have approval from someone that you liked. "Thank you." She grinned at him. Slate's stumbling over things was one of the things that she liked about him. He was not one of those guys that talked out of their ass, nor was he one of those that used girls and tossed them aside. The stumbling was cute.
"The ankle biters were fun..." She made sure to tell him. They were his siblings after all, and she did enjoy spending time with them. She had none of her own, but spending time alone with Slate was..definitely something she wanted to do. She liked the goofy grin....god help her..she was twitterpated!
"Hell yes!" She almost had a little bounce in her step as she stood there. She loved cheering and being in the spotlight, always had. She could not wait to get out there. She smiled softly at his compliment, leaning over and kissing him gently on the cheek.
"I'm open all weekend actually..my parents are out of town again." She rolled her eyes slightly. " Pizza and kicking back sounds good." She agreed.

"They knew how to put on their best for you, wait till you hang around them more, then you'll be sorry!" He joked. They weren't that bad, but it was fun to crack joke about them once in awhile. He knew perfectly well they made cracks at his expense too.
That type of revenge was fun.
"I'll be sure to cheer as loud as I can when you're out there." He felt his toes curl slightly when she kissed him on the cheek, a sign that things were meant to be. At least that's what his grandmother said. Old people had funny thoughts about things like that!
"Parent's gone again," Although it didn't show, he was a bit nervous about being alone with Holly. "Tonight we can kick back and do something else tomorrow." It didn't advertise himself as a virgin but it also wasn't a huge secret. He was wanting to save himself for when he got married or as a relative said to him, "You cannot do it all the time, otherwise its not special!"
"So what time should I be over with the pizza?"

"Ooh so I see..they behave for me but the halo's are actually supported by the horns?" She asked, blicking some blond hair off her shoulder. "You know...your brother did try to tell me about some incident with you and a whoopie cushion?" Holly spoke, the corners of her lips curling into a teasing sort of smile.
Holly reached out, pulling a small bit of lint off of Slate's shirt gently, brushing away a non-existant wrinkle from the fabric. "I'm sure you will." She grinned at him.
She looked down at the floor for a moment. "Yeah, they tend to go out most weekends, get away from the daily grind..one of these days though..I'm gonna throw a wicked party." She smirked slightly. "Anytime is good with me, I should be home before 5." She answered. "Am I in charge of the movies?"

"Of course, sure there is a little speech before hand to help out. All in all though I wouldn't want to trade them for anything." Slate's eyes widened. "I was framed for that, I still claim my innocence on that!" This probably made him look more guilty.
His eyes shifted towards her hands as she fixed his shirt. He reached for her hand and gently held her hand. Her skin was soft and gentle to the touch. He felt lucky to have found her.
Parents going out of town every weekend? He might have been from small town Georgia but it didn't seem right to him. Maybe there was too much about teen girls disappearing or maybe it was seeing 'Scream' too many times.
"I'll be there at 5 and the movies will be your choice, all I ask is nothing too chick flickish. I don't need to end up on insulin due to all the sweet syrupy storylines." He chided her. He did trust her though to pick out decent movies for them and if something should slip in like 'Steel Magnolias' so be it.
Better to live through it rather than fuss about it.

Holly laughed as Slate tried defending himself against the whoopie cushion incident. She knew better, his brother had produced incriminating pictures when Slate had gotten up to go get more drinks out of the kitchen last time they were all together. "I wouldn't trade them for anything either..I actually didn't mind spending time with them. I don't have any siblings..mom decided that she was done after she had me." She grinned.
That grin slid into a warm smile as Slate took her hand in his. He was so gentle, sweet, just what she needed. He was someone she could trust. His parents had brought him up well. She laughed softly as he commented on no super chick flicks. "Oh I promise not to over do it on the girly stuff." She answered, letting her fingers lace with his gently. "I think we can do some guy action flicks if you want..big explosions and guns are always good."
her ex used to watch some of the most boring stuff on Earth, all science and documentery, and Holly had learned a long time ago how to zone out but still look like she was interested. Slate, he was not going to have that problem with her.

"They're sort of my test, if anyone can survive being around them, then I know things will be fine." He laughed slightly at Holly's comment. "Your parents would have not survived in the south, I think it was law in Georgia to have at least three kids." At least that's how it was with the families he knew.
There it was, that smile that could melt even the coldest of hearts. "That sounds like a great plan!" This was what he liked about Holly, she was feminine without being overtly. "To really make it a movie night, I'll even bring candy."
Holly was one of a kind, that was for sure. His friends warned him about the fakes of L.A. and Hollywood and even though he had seen it on tv, it hadn't happened in person to him.
