Saint followed Coco’s leads to get him to the bus and found a seat. His guide dog sat by his side and pressed against his leg. She was alert to all the people around them and the route they were taking so that she could lead him off when they reached their stop. Saint’s slender fingers moved through the brown and white fur. It reassured him of her presence and pleased her as well. This was getting easier every day, but he didn’t think he would ever feel completely confident. He missed Jonah and was worried. It had been over a week and they had not heard from him at all, not even a request for time off. Either Lia or Jandro would have walked with him, but they had their own lives and Saint didn’t like to interrupt with his problems. He was so grateful for Coco without whom he would not have any independence. Coco nudged his leg and he tensed, getting ready to stand. He carefully made his way off the bus and began to walk the last bit of his journey home. At first there had been young people that had harassed him. The gangs in the neighborhood used to pressure him to join, but not they just pushed him around. Luckily, Coco was very protective. He had a fear they might shoot her and leave him helpless, but he had gained a modicum of their respect and they began to leave him alone. He breathed a sigh of relief when he closed his door behind him. One more day. He went straight to his room to work on a report for science using his specially adapted computer.
