There were few things in life that made Varina McIntosh as gleeful as she was currently. Starting a club, was apparently one of them. Being able to talk over the school's announcer system was definitely one of them. Both in one day? Priceless!
The usual static accompanied the teenager's high, energetic voice as she began the Morning Announcements with the principal pinching the bridge of his nose between forefinger and thumb as though he had a headache.
“Good morning Gould students! You Silver folk too. It's a pretty muddy day out there so let's watch our feet as the floors are slippery! We have a few birthday's to announce, Magdalena Veloz and Levi Rubenstein are both a year older and hopefully wiser today. Be sure to wish them well if you see them today. I have been informed that after school today the Edwards family is having a Charity and Fundraising auction on their estate. All proceeds are going towards the victims and their families of the shooting we had not too long ago. Speaking of vicitms, we had a student in an altercation the other day. Zach Doyle is in the hospital after multiple stab wounds nearly took his life. I'm sure he'd appreciate visitors. Also you should be getting fliers from your homeroom advisers this morning for a new club. GLEE's first meeting will be on Wednesday March 5th. We'd like to remind all students that leaving the campus for lunch is a privilege not a right, if students continue to abuse this the privilege will be revoked. These have been your morning announcements. Happy learning!”
Static ended the announcements same as it began them and Varina hooked the microphone back on it's hanger with a look of total self satisfaction. At that very moment the homeroom advisers were indeed passing out brochures for GLEE which had absolutely nothing to do with the popular TV series, and everything to do with a Gay-Straight alliance.
The brochure had a picture of Jefferson McIntosh and Zach Doyle embracing on the front with the words “Gay, Lesbian, and Everyone Else” in bold IMPACT font. The interior detailed the need for more awareness regarding hate crimes against LGBTQ individuals and communities. In bold lettering on the front flap a line reads:
“California law prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.” and directly below that the question: “So why are so many still harassed?” It outlined the mission and stated the club president as Varina McIntosh with a thumbnail picture of her beneath a rainbow flag holding up a peacesign and a huge Varina-like grin.
Varina was making her way back to class, putting up the last of the posters she and her mother'd had printed over the weekend. In no way did she see this club failing, though she WISHED she'd started it years ago.
