Lana was in a good mood this morning, despite her brother's soup puss attitude. She had gotten up, showered and had breakfast with little vocals to anyone in the family. She had gotten dressed in a pair of jeans and a lace tank top, her long hair loose down her back.
She had driven herself to school, not wanting to share a car with Blake. Plus it was easier in case Blake had something after school or a therapy session. Locking her car, Lana headed up the stairs into the school. She headed toward her locker to grab what she needed for the day. Twisting the combination to her lock, Lana opened her locker and began flipping through her books.
There was a soft knock on the other side of the metal locker door, and Lana leaned back, raising an eyebrow to see who it was. Blake never knocked. The person on the other side got a warm smile from the introverted young woman. "Ashley..good morning."
There were a few shared classes as well as working with him on the newspaper. Lana enjoyed Ashley's company, when he chose to give it of course. The young man was usually pretty quiet for the most part, something Lana could appreciate.
"How was your weekend?"

His day had started out well, Kai ready and raring to go for his day with Ashley's dad, apparently the older man had deliveries to do all day so his son would be entertained for the better part of the day. All he needed was to organise a sitter for tonight and he would be able to attend the party as planned, he didn't have a date he didn't have a sitter, as his parents were going out to dinner tonight for a night alone.
So as he opened his locker to retrieve certain items from it and put his bag away for the time being, he heard someone say hello to him who sounded familiar he closed his locker to get a better look at who it was and ended up smiling brightly at Lana, his day had just gotten a whole lot more fun.
"Hey Lana, my weekend was good... we had plenty of stuff going on and no Alex so it was a boys weekend." Ashley said to her with a smile. "Its been a little while since we were able to do that." Ashley explained. "What about you? And is your brother still in the world of the living." he asked with a smile.
Ashley thought that as much as he sometimes needed someone to vent at, that Lana and others might also want to vent and for once in a very long time he was able to listen with no real issues of his own to occupy his mind. Life was bliss for him at the moment, everything was going just great.

It was really nice to see an actual smile on Ashley's face. It widened the one on her own. He said that his weekend had been good, that his son's mother had not been around so he had gotten some boy time with the toddler. That was really good. Lana really liked the fact that while it was tough, Ashley took care of his son as best as he could. She admired that. It was probably not something that would sit well with her father or her brother if they knew. They'd have an embolism if they knew that she was friends with a single father.
"Mine was ok I guess. We headed back to D.C. and spent some time with our family out there." She scrunched up her nose slightly. "And Blake is alive..for now. I swear though, if he doesn't stop with his attitude towards our dad, he's gonna find his butt in a military academy..and I'll be damned if I get tossed there too by association." She muttered.
Lana pulled a small envelope out of her bag and a few pieces of tape. She began taping a few new pictures of some younger kids to her locker door. They were updated pictures of some of the kids that she had babysat for back in D.C. "So what are you up to?" She asked.

Ashley laughed, "Yeah that would not be good for him, if he hates authority, thus why I would never join the Army, I'm not sure I could ever take orders from someone in a starched uniform. My brother is serving in Iraq, well I say is serving, he flies homes next week from a six month tour... from what I hear he doesn't plan on going back either... so it'll be good to have the big lug around the house. Someone else for Kai to jump all over." Ashley said to her with a grin on his face. "Well newish old, last time Kallum saw him in the flesh he was barely talking, now you have trouble stopping him talking." Ashley said with a proud smile. "Now all I really need for him to do, is get the hang of using the potty and my life will be so much easier." Ashley said to her. "Plus a lot less messy that was just plain nasty." he added with a grin on his face.
"Actually I was looking for someone to babysit tonight, I have been asked to attend the auction at the Edwards. I'm not sure how they know me, but I seem to have some spare time on my hands." Ashley explained. "Do you know any one made enough to help a single dad out, I can pay them of course." Ashley added.

"You get kinda used to taking orders, becomes part of you really..when the General says jump..I usually do it...Blake..he fights every step of the way. I think he does it more to piss off dad then he does it to rebel against authority really." Lana answered with a grin. "Kudos to your brother for serving a term. It's good to see people with the ability to serve like that. I couldn't." She grinned again, sliding her books into her bag.
Her grin widened as Ashley began talking about his son. "Oh..diapers are..interesting..seriously..how does something that foul come out of something normally really cute." She smiled, flipping her long hair back off a shoulder. "My advice on the potty training..don't force it. He will be ready in his own time..and shhh but boys are really hard to train anyway." She grinned again.
Her head tilted to the side slightly when Ash mentioned that he was looking for a sitter so he could go to some auction thing. "I used to babysit back home..if you need someone tonight, I could do it. I love kids." Lana looked at him, unsure if he would agree. "I could do it at your place so he's in familiar territory with a new person."

Ashley smiled at her, "You sure you want to volunteer your services, I can't be held responsible for his backside once I leave the house." Ashley said smiling at her. "If your happy to it would be seriously helping me out, I'm not sure what his mom is doing tonight we haven't discussed the plans. Which of course means if she is at the party and sees me there without Kai, she's likely to hit the roof... well when she learns that it isn't my parents sitting him she will." Ashley said smiling.
He wasn't particularly concerned about what Alex thought of his choice in babysitter, as he knew Lana, it wasn't like the girl was a complete stranger. Maybe she'd have an issue with his choice in girl to sit their son, but again he didn't see what her problem would be. Custody wise Kai was Ashley's responsibility, to him that was not going to change any time soon. He didn't think his parents would relinquish their joint custody of Kai to Alex... the situation was pretty screwed up for the three of them. Then again they had never been a family, Ashley wasn't sure he ever wanted that to be the case. He had really begun to realise that he didn't want to revisit his past, her father reminding him recently that life had just got more complicated when Alex was about. The question really became did he want Alex in their lives, her fathers antics included he just wasn't sure about that... confused about the future summed him up nicely.
"I can get stuff in for you, I don't plan on being home late as we have school tomorrow, but I won't leave you to starve while I'm out either. My mom and dad should be back by 9 ish... I'd call them and let the know your be there so my mom doesn't freak. You wouldn't believe how protective she is of her only grandson so far." Ashley explained.

Lana smiled, her nose kinda scrunching up cutely. "Kai is two...I'm sure he is not going to be that much of a problem for me..I mean..you don't come in wanting to tear your hair out every morning." She grinned at him. "yes I am serious about it, I wouldn't offer my help if I wasn't, I'm not like that." Lana slid her bag onto her shoulder, turning to lean against the lockers as they spoke.
"I wouldn't worry too much about Kai's mom right now really...I mean you have full custody, and after what happened...she barely has a foot to stand on." Yes, Lana was familiar witht he fact that Alex had ditched her son for two years. It made her mad to think that someone could do that to their own baby.
Lana grinned again. "I can take care of my food, you don't need to worry about that, and you don't need to pay me either Ash..we are friends, friends help each other out." She tucked some hair behind her ears, chewing on her lower lip. "So what time do you need me after school? Assuming I'd being doing his dinner and bath and bed right? Fussy eater, allergies? Anything I should know?" She grinned.

Ashley smiled at her, "No, no allergys you need to be worried about, he'll be feed about the time you get to the house so you won't need to worry about cooking for him. I'll make sure theirs a bottle ready for him, give it to him close to his bed time, and don't let him sweet talk you into staying up past his bed time. He is a sweet talker and he will take you for a ride if you let him. He gets it from me apparently I hated bedtimes at his age." Ashley said to her. "But then I suffered from nightmares right through my early years just like he does. If he wakes up he'll just want a cuddle and likely fall asleep in your arms if you let him, otherwise pile some pillows on the sofa lay him down on them cover him up and he'll send himself back to sleep. Milks in the fridge if he asks for it, warm it up a little and it will do the job for you." Ashley said to him with a smile.
"He has a blanky on his bed and a teddy bear which he sleeps with every night, the hall light is always left on so don't turn it off... I'll leave my laptop downstairs for you, we have every package available on the TV so help yourself. I'll leave my number so if an emergency comes up call me, if he starts causing you trouble call me." Ashley explained to her. "He is a good kid but this is one of the first times I've left him with someone he doesn't know." Ashley added.

Lana smiled. "So dinner before I get there, is he allowed any sort of treat before bottle and bed?" She asked. "Just in case he tries telling me that Daddy lets him?" She grinned at him. "What time is bed time?" Should she be taking notes on some of this stuff? "Poor thing. How bad are the nightmares?" Lana asked. "I can do cuddles, I'm good with the cuddles."
Blankies, milk, bottles, all of the information that Ashley was giving her, Lana was storing in the back of her head. She was pretty sure that Mrs. Bolton would probably go over some of this stuff later with her when she got there this afternoon. "K, no turning off the hallway light upstairs. You don't need to leave me your computer, I have my own that I can bring. I'll end up doing homework after he goes to bed anyway."
Lana's smile was soft, warm as Ash mentioned she would be one of the first that he would leave Kai with that the child did not know. "I can go over early if you want, give Kai some time to get to know me before your parents leave? That way there shouldn't be any problems."

Ashley smiled, "His allowed anything that doesn't have major sugar content, theirs some fruit packets in the fridge which he can have one of before he goes to bed if he asks for a snack. He isn't allowed soda of any kind so just don't give it to him, if you do, your going to have to deal with a hyper two year old." Ashley said to her. "Your never get any peace, though you might get some entertainment." he added with a smile. "I'm sure your be fine though, as I said Kai's a great kid... cheeky sometimes but great." Ashley said with pride.
He could take the majority of the credit for how Kai had turned out, the rest went to his parents who had been nothing but help to him. If he was honest Alex was only just starting to learn about Kai and his quirky nature.
"It might be an idea if he meets you properly first, my parents would probably like to meet you before they leave anyway... just to give their seal of approval. I'm sure kai will love you mind you, how can a boy of two resist a beautiful girl after all." he said with a playful smile on his face.
