Today was going to be rather interesting, Tyler had long since decided. It was Maggy’s birthday, and he felt that as he was seeing the girl casually, (not dating her, like everyone seemed to think. He didn’t date.) he should do something to mark the occasion. He never had the need or desire to celebrate the birthday of any of his women before, despite the large number he had. They were all just flings after all, distractions, there was no need to do such things anyway, and nor did they expect him to pay the day any attention, especially as all he ever shared with most of those women were a night or two of fun. If he felt like buying them a gift, he did, he certainly could afford to, and he especially enjoyed reaping their gratitude afterwards. So birthdays were largely ignored, there was no reason for him to remember.
But, he felt, given that Maggy had so far resisted further advances from him, apart from the odd and hard earned kiss, and that they were seeing each other on a semi-regular basis (otherwise known as dating to everyone besides Tyler), he should do something for her today. Even as simple as giving the girl a gift. Which, regarding who it was for, wasn’t exactly too simple after all. She wasn’t like most girls, and while Tyler had wanted to get her jewellery, what most girls would love were things he knew Maggy wouldn’t. It wasn’t easy, but he managed to find something he hoped she would like, something he knew was more of her tastes, and yet still fit loosely enough into the jewellery category to make him happy too. She really was too much effort.
He stood leaning against her locker, waiting for the girl to show up, and luckily, she didn’t leave him waiting for long. “Happy birthday Maggy.” he greeted, and moving quickly before she could stop him, something he knew she would attempt, he slipped an arm around her waist, and pressed a soft kiss to her lips.

Maggy hadn't expected Tyler to remember her birthday. After all, they were very pointedly not exclusive, so he had no real reason to think anything of it. But there he was, hovering before her locker. And she decided that she actually didn't mind. He was pretty, and as most people assumed they were dating she was the envy of a number of her classmates of both genders.
Before she could say anything, or thrust him away, he was kissing her. "Thanks." She breathed when he'd let her go. "I, ummm, I wasn't expecting you to remember." She admitted, staring down at her boots. She was going out with her family -- and Phil; he had made enemies out of ninety percent of the school due to his falling out with Annie, or so it seemed, but he was still her best friend. He had been forever, and she wasn't going to abandon him just because he'd publicly announced feelings she'd known about. Did she think he'd overreacted? Most definitely. Did she wish he'd change his mind? She sure did. But she wasn't going to ostracize him. He was still the only non-family member invited to her dinner. Which meant, of course, her and her parents.
She twisted the hem of her shirt in her hands. "Sooo. Yeah. Thanks. I ummm I kind of have plans with my family. I guess you can come, if you want. My mom loves you." Please don't try and start anything with Phil, though She pleaded silently. He wouldn't...would he? Tyler had more social awareness than anyone else she knew (herself included) so he would know that would only upset her....right?

“Of course I remembered.” Tyler grinned, pleased that she didn’t pull away from him this time. And they were in public too, that was definitely an improvement. It seemed he was in fact growing on her. Maybe it was time for him to try for more than just a chaste kiss, the next time he could talk her into being alone with him. Which wasn’t exactly an easy task, she still seemed reluctant to be alone with him for long. Perhaps his intentions were all to obvious to her.
He was surprised at what she said next. Perhaps she did in fact know him better than he realised. He had planned to do ask her out for tonight, it seemed like the appropriate thing to do, and it had been a little while since they had gone out. He had not expected her to have plans with her family however, though now he realised he should have expected that. It was what most families did on birthdays, he supposed. Not his family though, for the past couple of years, Tyler would have breakfast with his father and step-mother, so he could have the night free, to entertain the lady, or on his last birthday (his best one yet), the ladies of his choice. His father knew just how his son would prefer to spend his birthday.
He didn’t do the whole meet the family thing. Sure he met Maggy’s mother, but that was necessary to try to keep himself in the girl’s good graces. But a family dinner wasn’t quite what he was used to. He didn’t see no way around it though, other than to say he already had plans, and he believed that would reflect poorly on him, already having plans on her birthday. It couldn’t be that bad, he reasoned, Maggy did have a point. Her mother did seem to take a shine to him, and he was sure he could charm her father just as easily.
“I would love to come Maggy. If you don’t mind, that is. If you would prefer it to be just you and your family, I’d understand.” he smiled, not expecting her to turn him down now. So very few women could. “It’s your birthday after all, you should spend it how you want it. Which reminds me, I’ve got something for you.”
He pulled a small box out of his pocket, glancing it over. “I wasn’t really sure what to get you. But I’ve seen you with things of similar...style,” he settled on, “Before, so I thought you would like this. If you don’t, feel free to tell me, I won’t be offended.” he laughed. “You’re just quite hard to buy for. Happy birthday.” He pressed the box into her hands, leaning in for another kiss. Hard to buy for was quite an understatement. She was an unusual girl, so it was more than a little time consuming to find something for her, especially when his own tastes were quite different. And it wasn’t as though he could go to his step-mother, or Bree and Sloane for help either. He was sure anything they liked, the band girl would not.

"No, of course I don't mind. It's just me and my parents and Phil." Maggy assured him. Her mother would be thrilled, and while her father might be suspicious of Tyler's intentions toward his daughter he'd at least be happy that she was dating someone normal. As for Phil, well, he would just have to acknowledge that she was dating Tyler, so he would sometimes actually be around. That's just the way dating went; sometimes you hung out together. And it was her birthday, too, so it shouldn't be any surprise he would want to be around. "If you come over around five-ish we'll just be getting ready to go."
She took a step back when he offered her a box, surprise registering on her face. "Oh! Thanks." She accepted the gift gingerly, as if somehow it would vanish the moment she touched it. She opened it with some trepidation, her mind racing. What would his interpretation of her style be? She knew she didn't dress the way his other girlfriends and interests did. Fortunately it appeared he knew her better than she'd realized; her face lit up as her eyes rested upon the gorgeous steampunk bracelet.
"I love it!" She said truthfully, pulling it out of the box and turning it over in her hands. She was touched that he knew what she would like. "I guess, ummm, you don't mind if I...if I put it on, do you?" She asked, turning red. Well, duh, he'd bought it for her, why wouldn't he want her to wear it?
She gave him a small smile. "Thanks, that's really sweet." Sometimes Tyler was more than a gorgeous football player; sometimes he managed to seem like he cared about her. She knew that was his game, making girls think he cared about them, but as far as she was aware he didn't routinely buy birthday gifts for his intended conquests. Maybe she'd misjudged him and he was truly interested in her after all.

“And now me.” Tyler added with a grin, tilting his head to the side as he kept his eyes on Maggy. It didn’t go unnoticed by him that apart from Phil, no other friends of hers were invited to this cosy sounding family dinner. Not even Mew. So maybe he was wearing her down more than he thought. He wasn’t about to invite her to spend the night with him in his pool house, of course, he knew she wasn’t ready for that by a long shot (annoyingly. What was it with stubborn girls lately making him wait?) but this was an improvement. “Five. I’ll be there. I’m looking forward to it. It’ll be good to meet your father.” Did he just actually say that? Either he actually meant it, or he was so convincing he was starting to convince himself. He needed to get a hold of reality again after the dinner i.e. go out, get drunk, and sleep with a preferably loose girl.
He felt a very rare case of nerves, the kind he usually only felt during those all important football games, when things got right down to the wire, as she took the box, looking at it as though it was about to bite her. It was understandable, a good part of his reputation was built around women, knowing women, pleasing them, being irrestiable to them. It wouldn’t do now to get something so trivial as a gift so wrong. Just game day nerves, is all. And then Tyler saw her face and realised, that as usual, he was spot on.
He had hoped she’d like it, but her reaction was even more...genuine than he expected, so it was a very genuine smile that he returned to Maggy. “Good, I lost track of the amount of websites I trawled through trying to find something you might like.” he admitted with a chuckle, his smile only widening. “Actually, I do. I’d much rather put it on for you. If you don’t mind.” he offered, waiting a moment before gently taking the gift off her hands when she didn’t protest. “It’s what a guy does when he gives a woman jewellery, after all.” he explained. It was kind of like jewellery after all, it was a kind of watch / bracelet thing. He smoothly slipped it onto her wrist, fastening it. “There, perfect. Suits you.”
“You’re welcome. Just maybe keep the sweet bit to yourself. I have a reputation to maintain.” he teased, flashing the grin that was known to make women melt. “I’m just glad you like it. You’re a very hard woman to buy for, Magdalena Veloz.” He took her hand, the one attached to the wrist that was currently adorned with the very sparkly steampunk bracelet, and held it. Not just kissed it and dropped it, but held it, his fingers linked with hers. Maggy was different to most girls, so he had to treat her like such. Maybe Sloane was right with this whole Nolan this. It was kinda nice, having a normal sort of relationship, on top of all his other relationships. It was too bad for his friend really, that she had gone about it all the wrong way. He did much better with Maggy, she wasn’t going to get mad at him if she saw him with another woman. In fact, he believed she expected to. Open relationships were quite a handy thing, he decided.
And so he talked to her, the way he wouldn’t talk to one of his ‘casual’ girls. “So, my sister’s in town.” Tyler spoke softly, before grinning at her expression. “Don’t worry, she’s not a black sheep we’ve kept locked up to keep the family name intact.” the footballer laughed. “She’s my half sister, to be accurate. My mother’s. She’s been through a bit, and she’s related to me, so still a Durnham, so my father’s been kind enough to take her in. She arrived over the weekend, and has already managed to get a puppy and promises of driving lessons from me.” Laughing, he studied the hand in his just a moment. “I think you would like her. It’s odd though, being a brother. I’ve gotten used to being an only child.”
