Ms. Chen was back for the time being. Every time she came home, her routine was the same. She would pick Isabella up for a shopping trip. Mother daughter bonding needed to be done. Ms. Chen knew she neglected her children in favor of acting, but its how they lived. Jett's father was out of the picture and Izzy's father was in Korea, so he was no help. No one realized how much being a single mother sucked. So Ms. Chen did what she could. She let strangers raise her kids, while she went from movie set to movie set. Sometimes she would bring the kids with her. Mostly when she was between nannies.
"Isabella do not buy that. White has never been your best color. Why not go for something more earth toned. Like brown or green." Ms. Chen could be a tad too critical of her children, but it was only because she wanted the best. She was a bitch, but no one had to know that for sure. Its one of the reasons Izzy never introduced her mother to her boyfriends or her friends. She could only imagine how her mother would react.
"Yes mama." Izzy said putting the shirt back. However, Izzy always had to share her good news. "Oh mama, I forgot to tell you I have a boyfriend. His name is Taki. He is from Japan, I know you would love him. Jett approves." Izzy said smiling as she looked through the shirts her mother pointed out. They could not look good on a dog, they were way too ugly for their own good. Some places needed fashion advice for what they sold.
Ms. Chen eyed her daughter, "A boyfriend really Isabella. I raised you to be independent, not to run around with some high school boy. Focus on your studies, cause once your graduate, you know what happens correct." She smiled.
Izzy eyed her mother, "But mama he does not distract me. He is a good guy. Funny, sweet, and he makes me smile."
Ms. Chen sighed, "Isabella do not begin with this. You said that about the last boy, and I told you then, does not matter. Things are already set in motion when you graduate. You are to go to Korea for an arranged marriage your father has arranged. Its a tradition in his family. You know this. All daughters are in arranged marriages, you are no exception my dear."
"Mother you cannot just ship me back. I am an American Citizen. I was hoping that was some kind of prank that was not funny. Please mama. I am not saying I will marry Taki, my god, i just started dating him, but an arranged marriage. Please...no mama." Izzy pleaded.
Ms. Chen gave her daughter a hard stare. "No more talk, now please stop acting like a child with that pleading." Her English slipped into Korean.
Izzy also began to speak in Korean, "I won't do it. I have plans for an education, for school."
"Men do not want smart women, they need obedient ones. You do not need an education. You need a husband to take care of you." Ms. Chen commented.
Izzy eyed her mother, "Mother you are independent and work, why can't I."
Ms. Chen touched her forehead for a moment, "Because I had to be. I got pregnant with Jett and no long was able to be married. I had to provide for myself and I did. Now do not argue with me young lady. You will either end this relationship now, because its non sense, or led this boy on until you graduate. Your choice, but your fate is final."
Izzy was upset now. Her mother was always like this. Unreasonable. Her Korean became English once more, "I hate you....I wish you would die right now and be gone from my life for good."
Those words could not have come at a worse time. They were said in anger, Izzy did not mean them, but as the last word left her mouth, it only took a few seconds before Ms. Chen fell to the ground. It took ten minutes for the ambulance to come and then thirty more minutes before Ms. Chen was pronounced dead at the hospital and Izzy Chen was left blaming herself for her mothers death thinking her words some how actually did cause her mother to fall down dead.
