Gelsey pressed her face against the display window outside DSW, scanning row upon row of adorable shoes. She wished she had spending money again, but that would require her father once more finding gainful employment, and his job search was becoming more and more disheartening the longer it went on. Were his skills that much in abundance that nobody had need of them? Surely someone had need of a former video game design consultant? He'd been hinting that he might find it necessary to begin applying at such high paying places of employment as Wal-Mart and Kroger. Anywhere that would provide a paycheck would be welcome; after all, they had a mortgage to pay off! And anyway, surely stooping to retail or fast-food would be temporary, just until the economy picked up again. Maybe she'd be able to pick her ballet up again...
"No use just looking..." She sighed, turning away from the display; no matter how long she stared she wouldn't be able to afford a single pair, and what money she did have was earmarked for her lunch. Sauntering along under the eaves she spotted a classmate coming out of the store she'd just been looking in.
"Hello! Lovely day for shopping, isn't it?" She greeted, coming to a halt.

www.polyvore.com/cgi/profile?id=344284So far it had been a very productive day. The two McIntosh women had put together a pamphlet on the club Varina was bent on starting as her High School Legacy and gone straight to the nearest Kinko's to have several hundred printed up along with some large banners and posters to display. The hard part was over, now all Varina had to do was actually get some people to join. Why wouldn't they though? GLEE would be a hit. Bigger even that the TV Series by the same name, but under a different purpose. As a reward the two XX McIntoshes had treated themselves to lunch, a mani and a pedi and were currently shoe shopping and sharing gossip with giggles. It was, perhaps considered strange for a teenage girl to be so close to her mother. The more popular thing was to be angsty and bitch about one's parents. But then hardly anyone had parents as cool as Varina's. Arms laden with shoe boxes (Dad would be pained to see the state of his bank account) Varina and her mother, Helen emerged from the shoe store and come to a halt at the chipper question. V's immediate answer was: "Everyday is a good day for shoes!" If she realized it was a paraphrasing of a Star Trek saying, Winnie would never admit to it. Trek was for the geeks and nerds. She was neither, thankfully. Eying the girl before her, the pale makeup, the unkempt hair, the... oh god no. She'd spoken to one of the school freaks? UGH! "Friend of yours, Winnie?" Helen asked doubt coloring the very edges of her tone. The girl in front of them didn't LOOK like the sort her daughter would hang out with, but then stranger things had been known to happen. Like a gay son who was into football for the sport, of all things.

Gelsey smiled beatifically at the other girl. She knew she'd seen her around at school; she was like a tropical bird, impossible to miss with all her bright colors. "I suppose that's true." She agreed, placing her hands behind her back and observing the two brunette women with a reserved cheerfulness. "But I think today is a particularly nice day. And tomorrow will be an even nicer one."
Her eyes slid to the beaded bag on the other girl's shoulder and she lit up. "I love your purse!" She said, her enthusiasm level spiking to what for her would be 'gushing' -- for anyone else it would have been 'mildly interested'.
"Oh, no, we're not friends." The pale goth reassured the older woman pleasantly, "I don't believe we've ever spoken before.
She turned her attention back to the daughter, slightly jealous at the sight of all the boxes the two women were carrying between them. She loved shoes, and wished she could have afforded that many, but of course with her father unemployed she wasn't able to indulge much. "I think I've seen you around." She noted, by which she meant she'd definitely seen Varina. "You go to Silver, right? I don't think you're in any of my classes, so you must be."
