Mr. McIntosh shifted his weight again, his son's discomfort was uncomfortable for him, but in matters of the police there was little to be done. His son's name was clean, he knew that much, but he also knew how difficult it was for young boys who'd come out. The world was not particularly kind to those of a homosexual nature. He wanted life to be easier for his children. Not shootings, earthquakes, and stabbings that would lead to questions of their character.
"I didn't do anything to him!" He said imploringly. "I called Kate straight up after and came home! You can check my cell even!" He added, though that would only show that he had indeed called Kate, not that he'd traveled home immediately after. Still, anything to get the police to go away! Which they didn't seem all that inclined to do, unfortunately. "I wouldn't attack him! He fuckin' told me I could beat him up, that he deserved it, but he was already a mess from Quentin earlier, and....and...I really didn't do anything." He finished lamely.
The officer didn't seem impressed, but she didn't push the issue, instead simply saying, "You've been very cooperative, Jefferson. We just need to take a DNA sample, then we'll be finished here."
Jeff was relieved that they didn't press him about the exact nature of their friendship, or why they didn't spend time together anymore; at least Zach's secret wouldn't be plastered all over the front of the news. Even though he wasn't sure that it mattered, if Zach was dead. "Yeah, sure." He agreed. They couldn't very well pin this on him using DNA, since he knew he was innocent....

Once the police were gone Mr. McIntosh patted Jeff on the back. "If you kids need a ride to the hospital, let me know." He offered.
Jeff gaped at his father. "Hospi...wait, he's not dead?" His face showed palpable relief when his father answered this in the affirmative. "Oh...oh! Good. I mean, that would suck." He looked over at Kate, "Ummm, you don't mind....? You don't hafta come. But I mean...you know...probably should, if they aren't gonna keep me away cause I'm supposed to have killed him or something."
