His father is a very bright man, but stubborn. He was a commodities broker in New York and moved to L.A. recently as he was promoted to run the L.A. branch of Heritage West Futures Marketers. His mother is trying to open her own catering firm which David does not approve of. He is very old fashioned and believes she should stay home even though all the kids are almost in high school.
David and Abigail fight a lot and while there are never physical blows thrown, the atmosphere is not loving by any means and none of the kids are as self-confident as they should be because of the mental and emotional abuse they suffer. This is especially true of Dylan as he is the oldest and they expect the most from him.
