Jonell sat cross-legged outside the Physical Science classroom, notebook balanced on one knee and textbook laboriously held up with the other. She'd failed to finish any of her homework the night before, which was only unfortunate in that passing was a requirement for staying on the cheer squad. She really wished that it wasn't considered so important, because she didn't understand a single word she'd read so far and she'd been paying too much attention to the new (and very adorable) French student to pay any attention to the teacher.
"This is so stupid." She sighed in annoyance, thrusting her half-answered questions away from her. She was making zero progress, and it was frustrating! She envied those who could understand so easily the material presented, but passing at all was a struggle, let alone true comprehension. She wished she had seen Felipe at his locker that morning; he'd been so helpful the other day, and he was handsome, and he probably found things such as Physical Science assignments to be laughably easy.
She glanced up at the people passing by, wondering if perhaps Felipe would magically appear, and was struck by how very many attractive men populated her little world. And they were very much more interesting than some dusty science class!
She shifted as someone seated themselves next to her, greeting her new companion with a smile. "Do you understand any of this?" She inquired, gesturing to her textbook, "I think the teachers are secretly laughing at us, trying to make us remember all this nonsense!"

Looking up from her text book, Lia looked over at the pretty girl sitting next to her and then down at the page she was complaining about. "I was much better with biology, truthfully I can't seem to wrap my mind around this stuff. If I am lucky I will pass, but then my older brother is the brains in the family and that's not saying a lot," she said with a warm smile. She stuck her hand over, trying not to send any books flying. "Hi I am Lia Juarez." She had never talked to the other girl before though she knew she was from the same school.
Lia wasn't her normal bubbly self that morning. She had found herself crying in her Raisin Bran that morning and had to be beat a hasty retreat so neither of her brothers would see her that way. They tended to start busting heads before asking questions when it came to Lia. Saint was in no condition to go on a rampage and Jandro needed Saint to control him.
"I love your hair. Does it have that wave naturally?" Lia asked, knowing her hair would never hold something like that without chemicals. She truly wasn't the best one to ask about school work, her mind just couldn't keep on it. Especially today when all she could think about was what a failure she was when it came to boys.

Jonell gave the other girl a once over, deciding instantly that this was not the sort of person she wanted to hang around with. She was, for lack of a better word, kind of weird, and Jonell avoided weird. That was no reason to be impolite, though, and after all Lia had asked after her personal appearance, which was flattering. And she didn't understand the work, either, which was reassuring; sometimes it seemed as if everyone else lived on some different planet, a planet where school work was easy.
"I'm Jonell," She replied, taking the proffered hand briefly before letting go. Polite was one thing, but overly friendly was quite another; she didn't want the other girl to think she wanted to keep up some sort of acquaintanceship outside of school. "My older brother is the brains, too. It comes so naturally to him, it's not fair."
"It's natural," She informed Lia proudly; she knew that so many girls fried their hair trying to get it to look like hers, and she therefore considered her natural gifts a triumph over other girls, who were her natural rivals. Of course, she'd dismissed Lia from rival-hood instantly simply based on strangeness; not that she wasn't pretty, but guys wouldn't date someone so abnormal. At least, that's what her mother always said, and Jonell tended to believe everything her mother said.

Although occasionally naive, Lia was for the most part a sensitive young girl and she felt that since she had taken up her Wicca studies she had become more so. It wasn't hard to tell Jonell wasn't enthralled in her company. "Life is rarely fair, she said shortly turning her eyes back to the incomprehensible text book.
Lia's delicate fingers shook as they trailed across the words on the page, for her eyes seemed prone to wander. "Maybe your brother could help you with it," she suggested, wishing she could still go to Saint with her school confusions.
"Or maybe ask your teacher for a tutor, maybe you will be lucky and get a good looking one," Lia said, knowing if it were her, she would get a girl or someone annoying. "I really should get going though," Lia said deciding it would be kinder to leave the girl alone. She really couldn't handle being with someone else who just tolerated her. She stood and smiled. "It was nice meeting you." She turned and began to leave intending to head out to the quad to study, maybe skip her first period.
