Casper's arrival at the house was low key, his brothers had some after school events which meant that he could get out of the school without listening to arguing all the way back to the house. His mother was cooking in the kitchen when he came into the kitchen. "Hey ma." Casper said as he walked to the fridge to take a bottle of milk out of it, them went about glugging down most of it his mother tutting at this.
"We invented glasses for a reason." she said to him causing him to blush. "Has Pierre gone back for your brothers?" she asked him.
"I heard the car go back up the drive." Casper said to her with a smile. "Lou as being annoying the hell out of everyone today." Casper said to her. "His new no meat fad, well he has been trying to force it on the rest of us." Casper said his mother chuckled at this.
"Yes I had heard about this new fashion statement." she said to him.
"He is being a putz." Casper said getting a slap to the back of the head as his mother walked past him. "Ah mom, you know I am making sense." Casper said. "Anyway I'm going to shower, then I want to go and get some coffee, you mind if I take your car?" he asked her.
"Dinner is in two hours, do not be late." she said. "Its your favourite, mutten curry." she added he smiled as he put the empty bottle in the trash and headed out of the room. "Two hours Casper." she called after him all she heard was his laughter as he headed up the hallway.
It wasn't that he didn't listen to his mother, he did, none of the children dared not to. There father would roast them alive if they did anything different, his mother could be scary at times, but that was nothing compared to his father.
Half an hour later and he was running wax through his hair to get it into the style he wanted, the vanity in him never allowed him to leave the house looking like a down and out.
"Casper." he heard a familiar squeal from behind him he turned to see his mini me in the door way, "Can I come with you?" he asked.
"Not today buddy, mom wants some help in the kitchen." Casper said to him. "I'll bring you back a muffin, and maybe something else." Casper said to him with a smile.
"Okay, a pretzel to Casper." he said.
"Do I look like I'm made of money?" Casper teased him.
"Yeah you do." he said to him Casper laughed.
"Okay then." Casper said as pushed the last strands of his hair where he wanted them to be. "How do I look?" he asked him.
"You look cool Casper." Nick said to him.
"Okay then Nick I just need to add some deoderant and some after shave and I am ready to get out of here." Casper told him. "You want some of this or you going to go help mom?" he asked the boy rushed forward.
There was ten years difference between the two of them, but Casper enjoyed his brothers company, it was like a mascot thing almost. While some of his other brothers had little time for the youngest member of the family.
Twenty minutes later
"I'll take the original pretzel, french roast, and I'll have a blueberry muffin please." he said as he stood at the counter Casper's eyes watched the waitress as she got his order. He wasn't sure why, but American coffee shops did some of the most disgusting coffee in the world. This place the coffee wasn't that bad, but it was still pretty bad by some standards.
"Is that to go or drink here." she asked.
"The coffee is to drink here, but I will take the rest of it to go." Casper said to her.
"Coming right up." she said before putting everything on the tray he gave her a note to cover it all, he waited for the change and tiped generously before trying to find a seat outside, the shop had an incredible view of the ocean at this time of day. It was enough to remind him a little of home, and home was apparent what made the heart grow fonder.

Candace loved to roller blade along the beach. The air seemed fresher, the traffic wasn't as heavy and well, there was always eye candy!
She was dressed in a pair of blue shorts, short sleeved tshirt that had a picture of the Cheshire Cat on it from the Disney version of 'Alice in Wonderland'. Along with that she had the elbow and knee pads and a helmet.
She had some eighties music on her IPOD as she rolled along. She'd let her eyes wander as she'd see some hot guy lifting weights or flexing for someone, or else they just had to be standing there shirtless and looking hot and clueless. Those were the best.
She heard a few whistles from guys to which she responded with a cute flirtatious smile and a little wave. She never went beyond that. There were too many girls her age becoming mothers before they were truly ready for it.
All this rolling was working up a thirst in her. She knew of the coffee shop nearby. She wheeled in and went to the counter and ordered an Arnold Palmer (half lemonade, half iced tea). She paid for her drink and left a decent tip and went outside.
She saw a young man sitting outside, looking so thoughtful. She sat down near him and said, "Amazing view, isn't it?"

Casper's eyes drifted to the girl who had spoken to him, he was impressed that the girl was so polite. He had been a little shocked that so many of the people he met here were either rude or ignorant. But here was a girl talking to him and he had never seen her before, or at least he didn't think that he had seen her before.
"Yes it is, it reminds me of home." Casper said with a huge smile. "It is why I chose to sit out the front of the shop, what is the point of having such a good view. If you dont use it to the best of your abilities." Casper said to her he rolled the sleeves of his jumper up before going back to his drink. "Would you like to join me?" he asked pointing at the chair across from him. America was a strange land to him, he didn't really get all the slang that some of the people here used. When he spoke it was with a deliberate ease, and a determined stance. It was almost like English was not his first language, it was of course, but he took care to choose his words with great care.
Casper's families move here from Brazil had been just over three months ago, his fathers new job meant that this was the seventh house they had lived in during his life. Just once he would like to spend more than a couple of years somewhere. Though from what he knew his father, was more than likely to want to stay here on a more permanent basis.

"Thank you, don't mind if I do." Candy smiled a genuine pleasant smile. She had to steady herself though when she saw his hand and forearms. He didn't have typical high school boy appendages, they belonged to a man.
'Steady on girl, don't get all squishy yet!' Though it didn't help he seemed smart knew how to use his words. She smoothed the bottom of her shorts before sitting down.
"Where are my manners? Here I am a total stranger sitting here. I'm Candace Witherspoon, but people call me Candy." So this confirmed that she wasn't some lunatic that one could meet on the streets of L.A.
"I love to bring Flopsy down here and throw a ball for him on the beach. Its amazing how people will stop and talk when they see a person with an animal of some kind." She took a sip of her drink. "I noticed you said it reminds you of home, which is leading me to believe your not from around here. If I get too nosy just say so, I have a tendency to be like my father who can pick up on anything."

Casper smiled at her, "Nice to meet you Candy." he said. "I'm Casper Van der Meares the third." he said to her with a grin. "My full name is a little longer than that but everyone calls me Casper." Casper said to her he didn't elaborate on this as just giving her his first and last names was a mouthful as it was.
"Flopsy I assume that he or she is a dog, I see a lot of people walking around here with little dogs in handbags. Like they were some kind of fashion statement. I happen to like dogs myself, back home when I was younger we had, a dog much like Lassie from the films. I can't remember the breeds name, as it was my grandfathers dog and I was very small when he died." Casper explained. "We've moved around quite a bit, so family pets are usually kept to fish in a pond or aquarium. Maybe that will change here in LA." Casper added.
"All apart from my youngest brothers, we were all born in South Africa, my father is a diplomat so we have moved around quite a bit. I was born and for the first ten years of my life, I was raised in Cape Town." he said to her he still had a strong South African accent, though it had softened in the years since their leaving his home country. "My family arrived in LA three months ago, we lived in Brazil before that. Myself and my brothers attend the local schools, Gould for the ones old enough, and a local primary school for those not." he told her.
"So have you lived here all your life? You have an American accent, but the accents of various states still are a myth to me. America has far to many." he said to her.

"Casper?" She repeated letting it sink in. "Oh of course, like the friendly ghost." She blushed slightly. "Sorry, sometimes things just click in my head and come flying out. Another trait I inherited from my father!" She rolled her eyes slightly. God forbid this should scare the guy off.
"You are correct, Flopsy is a dog, a four year old sheepdog to be exact. Not exactly a dog I could carry around, despite him thinking he needs to be in people's laps all the time!" Casper was a dog lover as well, bonus points in her book. "Ohh he had a Collie! Very beautiful dogs! I nearly got one but when I saw Flopsy, he looked like a big pile of cotton candy and I couldn't resist!" She took another dainty sip as he spoke. "You go to Gould? I go to Silver but right now our schools have merged so I know I'll see you there!" She felt the butterflies fluttering about in her stomach. "If you want I could show you off uhh I mean around the school, or at least the parts of it I know." What girl wouldn't want to be see on the arm of a handsome man like Casper?
"I was born and raised here in L.A., I missed the whole valley girl talk made ever so popular in the 80's, you think various accents are confusing, that took everything to a whole other level!"

Casper covered a snort of amusement when she made the goof, he thought it was probably an accidental slip up on the girls part. Not that he minded at all, he was used to girls reacting a certain way around him, it had been happening most of his life. Only as a pre adolescent child had he been slightly dorky... since the attack however he had worked hard to become as intimidating as possible.
"I've been at the school a while now, a guided tour would be a waste of both our time." Casper said to her but he wasn't done yet. "However if you want to catch some lunch some time or head down to the beach after school that we can do." he said to her, he wasn't asking her out on a date not in his eyes anyway. He was just taking the time to ask someone new to join him doing something remotely useful with there time.
"Your probably right, L.A. is full of diverse culture. So of course your going to get people in the city from all over the country and the world for that matter. All either wanting a holiday or wanting to be famous and in some cases both of those things." Casper said. "Its something I have yet to get used to, but then I think with time it will come." Casper added. "So your not of the saved by the bell era or the original 90210 era." he said using a little of the knowledge he had about American television.

'Candy, how in the hell did you let him escape your eye?!' She mentally scolded herself. "You have? I need to pay closer attention to my surroundings!" Casper was one guy she already knew not to do the dumb blond act for.
She was unprepared however for his next suggestion. Lunch would be great but the b-b-beach? She squeaked internally at the idea. She would be the envy of every girl at either school, or so she thought she would be. "That would be great!" All that played in her mind was seeing Casper slowly emerging from the ocean, the water dripping from his pecs, she was going to need a cold shower when she got home!
"That is for sure. Although I'm sure the fame isn't that its cracked up to be. I mean who could live a life like that? Photographers following every little step you make, rummaging through your trash to see what you didn't recycle or something? Thats one of the reasons I'm following in father's footsteps and wanting to be a lawyer, I want to defend the rights of those who have been violated in some manner." She realized she was starting to babble on.

Casper looked at her like she had grown an extra head when she said she wanted to be a lawyer, to him they were the most up tight bunch of people he had ever met. He had yet to meet a lawyer he actually liked, but then again he had met a lot of them and most of them were in politics.
"My father is a high level diplomat in the US, I've spent most parties listening to lawyer talk. To me it sounds very boring, but then I can't fault wanting to help people who need it. But I can't help but think that if we had less lawyers at the christmas party, we would all have a much better time of it." Casper said with a grin the last thing he wanted to do was anger the girl by mocking her choice. "At a guess as the eldest child I'm expected to either go into law or become a doctor, sadly I have the patience for neither." Casper said to her.
He was an intelligent guy, but he liked the wild out doors, he liked to surf, play sports or any kind really. If he didn't go into a sport of his choice he wanted to work out doors. He would make that choice close to the time, he still have a half year or so before he had to make any final decisions about his career choices. He still hadn't decided whether he wanted to learn here in the US, or go home and learn in his native lands, or even in england.
