Bree wandered the school looking for either Tyler or Sloane. Usually she didn’t mind eating alone, but lately she had been feeling a lot more sociable. Seeing how it was such a nice day, she decided to check the track, knowing Sloane liked to run during lunch period sometimes. At first she smiled seeing both of her quarry down there.
It was only a moment before it became clear there was more than casual conversation going on there. The real mystery was why it made her chest tight to see them that way. Why the sun became painful to her eyes and she had to turn away to blink away unwanted moisture. Not being in a questioning mood, she just returned the way she had come and continued out to the parking lot. She climbed into her sleek sports car and took a moment to rearrange her emotional armor. Once it was in place, she peeled out of the parking lot and headed to her place of refuge… the mall. While there was glittering merchandise to distract her she could work things out and come away invincible again. Her teachers wouldn’t turn her in for skipping. She was on the honor roll and they all loved her. Why didn’t that satisfy her today?
After she had purchased clothing for her upcoming events, she as always ended up in the book store. Seated in the café with a biography of Mata Hari, Bree sipped her chocolate orange cappuccino and appeared to read. She kept track of the time because she had promised to attend the Park Clean up and didn’t want to be late. The café was almost empty so she was surprised when her light was blocked and a deep attractive voice asked if he could join her. She looked up and smiled at a darkly handsome young man who was wearing an UCLA sweater. “Sure, there is plenty of room,” she said casually, doing her best to control her instinctual fear that came whenever a male showed interest in her.
Gradually she relaxed as he made no overt moves on her and they chatted casually. He was an architecture student going on a football scholarship and his name was Noah Tarrant. She liked that he was confident without bragging. He wasn’t dating anyone as he had been too consumed with his studies and football. She knew that architecture was a hard major and so she believed him.
Eventually she was comfortable enough with him that when he asked her out for the next night she said yes and they made arrangements to meet at the Mountain Gate Country Club which they both belonged to. It turned out they had even taken golf lessons together when she was twelve and he was fourteen. They parted when it was time for her to leave for the Park Clean up and he helped her carry her bags out to her car.
