The cloudy sky seemed to match exactly how Nolan felt. The bleak grey sky let through a dead light as the tall boy walked slowly towards his car, hands in his pockets. She had ignored him, again. Had been ignoring him since Bree's party. It ended so well, at least so he thought. They parted on what could only be described as good terms, in fact, just about the best terms he had ever parted with a girl on. Did he not call her soon enough afterwards? Or did he call too soon? How the hell was any guy supposed to get it exactly right?
Nolan entered the parking lot and headed for his car. He had hoped Sloane would be with him, but as it turned out she seemed to want nothing to do with him. There was no way he was going to stick around the cafeteria for lunch and potentially run into her, that would be too horribly awkward. His best bet was to get away for lunch and hopefully cool down, then stay out of the hallway the rest of the day. What he would do for the next few years, however, was still yet to be planned.
Lunch was finally here and anticipation boiled over for Sloane as she thought of meeting up with Nolan. After about four days of not seeing him, she actually really thought he didn't want to ever see her again. Then the text message came and she couldn't help but rejoice in that fact. She didn't really know why that was but for now, that thought would be put on the backburner.
Practically skipping through the hall, as much as skipping could be done in her heelless boots and bell bottom jeans, Sloane walked out to the entrance and scanned the area for any sight of Nolan, finally seeing him walking towards a car. He was opening the door and sliding in and Sloane frowned. Was he driving off without her? She was in a moral dilemma. If she followed him, it would go against everything she had ever done her entire high school life. If she let him go, she'd probably be spending the rest of her days in high school thinking about that one screw up she had with a Silver student.
She swallowed her pride and walked quickly to the car and before Nolan could close the door, Sloane grabbed it and held it back. She let go in time so the momentum wouldn't make her fall on her ass. "I thought we had plans."
It took Nolan a moment to realize why his door didn't shut. Finally his brain registered the voice, and for a moment he thought he was hearing things. He glanced up and saw Sloane standing by his car door. Was he seeing things as well? Or was she really standing right there? Part of him wanted to be angry with her, to tell her how hurt he was by her non-responsive attitude. But that would be very immature.
“I guess I didn't realize anything had been agreed on. I never heard from you.” His voice came out strong and emotionless. He didn't want Sloane to know how he felt. His face reflected the lack of feeling, remaining completely blank. But his blue eyes, almost looking grey underneath the colorless sky, gave him away. He looked back into the car and pretended to look through his CDs.
Another brush off in a span of five days? Sloane started to feel a numbing ache centered under her jaw, a tingling sensation in her stomach and chest area which was not something she was used to. The last time this happened was when her brothers made fun of the picture frame she made out of coloured broken glass. It had hurt her and that feeling was an indication that she was about to cry. And she was not going to cry in front of some boy!
She gulped inaudibly and chuckled, brushing her hair off her shoulder and shifting her weight on to her other leg. "I'm sorry, I was in class." He was angry and she knew that but being indifferent towards her for not replying a text message was just not something Sloane had ever experienced. She sighed when she saw him looking through a bunch of CDs nonchalantly. And she could see his eyes clouding over.
Taking out her phone, she looked through her inbox and found Nolan's message and replied to it. "Let's go have lunch. I'm dying to get out of school." She hit send and waited for him to get her message.
Was he mad over nothing? It's very likely she had gotten so caught up in school that she had forgotten to reply, and it was pretty short notice on his part. He almost turned back to say something, but he felt he would simply give away his emotions, and that was something he could not have.
Sloane had stopped talking, and it was making Nolan uncomfortable. The decision to end the tension was made for Nolan when the quiet was soon broken by a vibration coming from Nolan's pocket. Should he check it? Sloane might think it was rude, but it was just a text and it could be something important. He decided to look, figuring it would would only take a second. When he saw the text, however, he paused. A smile slowly crept to his lips. This stupid girl always seemed to know how to get to him, and he both hated and loved that about her.
He turned back to the very pretty girl that was standing next to his car, trying in vain to hide the smile. “Are you asking me out on a date?”
The moment the text came in, Sloane knew she had Nolan in the palm of her hand. Again. She professionally hid her smirk, which had a hint of a genuine smile, and leaned against the car beside Nolan's. "Am I asking you out on a date if I reply to the text with you asking me out on a date?" She asked, her piercing blue eyes dulled by the sun light but still enough to get to Nolan. "Besides, cafeteria food sucks and my mother didn't pack my lunch. Anything is better than here." She shrugged.
“Okay, okay. You win,” Nolan laughed. If there was ever anything his father, brothers, and even his sister had told him about girls is that they always win. Always. She smiled up at her, having seen before her reaction to his smile. It was one of the only defenses he had. “Get in.”
Sloane bit her lower lip reflexively when she saw his smile. So it has come down to this. She had to bite back every single thing she once thought was her way of life to impress this boy. Personally, she didn't think she'd ever see the day when she was the one doing the chasing. This boy was all kinds of dangerous but unknowingly, Sloane was in way over her head but she intended to come out smelling like daisies.
His order was to get in and for a split second she thought of slapping him in the face for ordering her around but she was still a lady. She composed herself and grinned at him. "Isn't the gentleman supposed to escort the lady to her seat? Or have you lost all manners? Chivalry may have died with Shakespeare but it doesn't hurt for you to take a leaf out of that man's books."
Nolan immediately stood up and offered his arm to Sloane. “You are a challenge, you know that?” He smiled again. It was definitely a challenge that he enjoyed. At least most of the time.
His words brought a bigger smile to her face and she let him lead her to the passenger seat. "I'd like to think so." She simply said before sliding into her seat and closing the door. Once Nolan was in the car, she turned to him with a smile. "What's the fun in letting someone have complete control over you? You might as well date your own parents. Or Hitler."
He didn't want to let her on to the fact that she just might actually have complete control over him. He had left the school with the intentions of forgetting entirely about this girl, and here she was. But something she said did catch his attention, the word “date,” and the reason he wanted to go to lunch with her in the first place. He needed to know something very important.
He turned to Sloane, the smile gone and looking completely serious. Fear gripped him for a moment. What if she denied him and disappeared? He had thought she was ignoring him before, but she returned. Why would he sabotage himself now?
But knowing was more important. If he didn't know what he meant to her, he could be getting himself in over his head. Perhaps it was all the rumors getting to him, but if even part of what Nolan had heard about Sloane was true, she could be bad news for him. He swallowed, and took a deep breath.
“Are we? Dating. I mean, what is this?” He paused, hoping to hear the best but ready for the worst. He couldn't have felt more vulnerable, and he was sure it was written all over his face. If she was ever going to crush him, this would be the time.
For a moment, Sloane thought she heard wrongly. Why was Nolan asking her about what this was? And then her own stupid reply came crashing down on her and she realised that she had dug her own grave. "You might as well date your own parents..." Why did she have to say that? The implications were great and now this question. What was she supposed to answer him? No, we're not dating. I'm just looking for casual sex? That would not go down well. Especially not since finding out that the boy was not at all like the guys she was used to dating.
Nolan was sweet, gentlemanly and for the most part, he was generous. And he had never pushed her further than their kissing. That both frustrated and excited her in ways she didn't think anyone ever could. Sloane was damn sure that this was getting way too serious. If Nolan had to ask, she knew he was not going to be ready to handle anything she had to offer. She was going to leave him sooner or later, she was hoping it would at least be after she had a taste of him. But she was having a hard time trying to convince herself that because he was a guy, he'd be able to handle heartbreak. She had seen one too many films and also real life incidents that showed how guys were more prone to breaking a girl's heart and to Sloane, it just meant girls had every right to do the same to guys.
She enjoyed what she had with guys and for the most part, it worked out for her since almost all of the guys who hooked up with Sloane Taylor knew she was an excellent lay. She never had to explain herself nor had she ever had to deal with heartaches and whatnot. But she still felt that Nolan was way more different than any guy she ever met. And she liked it. A lot.
Sighing, she looked at him, their eyes connecting. "Do we need to label this? I mean we're having fun right now. Do you really want to ruin it by officially announcing it?" She asked him. She took his hand and placed a kiss on the back of it. "We've only known each other for about a week. Let's just see how it goes. Okay?" She held on to his hand and used her other hand to cup his cheek tenderly, her thumb grazing in circles on his cheekbone.
Nolan was not happy with that answer. It sounded to him like an escape, like Sloane was avoiding the issue. But, to be fair, that wasn't exactly what Nolan had meant to ask. He took a moment to think. Sloane's hand on his face was distracting, and as good as it felt he had to focus. He reached up and pulled her hand down, holding both of hers in his own.
“I know it's only been a short while,” he conceded, knowing that was the weakness of what he was asking. And it showed his weakness. “And I don't care about labeling it, or announcing it. I don't care who knows or doesn't know what we are.” He paused again. This was it. There was no turning back after this. “I can't stop thinking about you.” It was said, and the terror Nolan had felt at the start of this conversation began to bleed away. “I really, really like you Sloane, and I need to know if you are in this as much as I am. If not, then...” Nolan couldn't finish that thought, but it was enough. His heart's fate was now in the hands of the girl he had taken a bullet in the butt for.
Sloane had expected a lot of things coming from Nolan but that was probably the last thing she had wanted him to say. What was she supposed to answer to that? He was the first to actually ask that question. Her first thought was to say screw all this. She did not have the time to be exclusive. But the fact that there was no doubt in her mind that if she were ever to settle with anyone in school, Nolan was her best bet, didn't escape her notice.
She could be honest with him. She liked him enough. And what could possibly happen if she decided to be as much part of this...relationship as Nolan apparently was? If it wasn't for him, she could have died in that shooting. She owed him. If that's the case, what about her date with May tonight? She couldn't very well cancel on her new friend. Not for a boy.
Then her mind thought up something so simple she didn't know why she didn't even think of it first. She'd seen her brother do it plenty of times. It was easy. As long as the other party was oblivious, everybody would be happy. All she had to do was lie.
She knew Nolan was waiting for an answer so first, she squeezed his hand and refused to look him in the eye for a really long time but once she did, she donned a little smile on her face. "Nolan...I really like you too. And I don't want this to end. Not now." She gave her head a little shake and with a deep breath, she looked at him again and pulled in closer with one hand on his cheek. "I'm in this with you." She said softly before pulling him down to her and pressing their lips together. It was immediately sweet and hot at the same time. She didn't want it to go any further but she needed to make a statement.
Nolan's face felt like it was burning. It was as if all the blood in his body were stuffed into his head, and it felt amazing. His heart was racing, both from the nerves he had before and the excitement he felt as he and Sloane kissed. He didn't want to be the kind of guy who was only after girls for one thing, but he also didn't want the kiss to stop.
As all things do, however, it ended. Nolan's eyes stayed shut for a moment longer, trying to keep that feeling from disappearing. He opened them to see Sloane looking back at him, and he smiled. One week was all it took.
He put the car in reverse and backed up. The smile on his face seemed plastered there, and he felt a definite sense of self-satisfaction. He had a girl that was pretty, kind, and best of all that really liked him. He was so glad to find his feelings for her were entirely reciprocated. As they exited the parking lot, he finally spoke.
“I'm glad. Because I have something special planned for tonight.” He looked over at her.
Nolan's expression when the kiss ended sent shivers down Sloane's spine and the feeling under her jaw, chest and stomach came back. She didn't know what it meant but she knew it was not something good. She composed herself right in time to see those beautiful eyes staring at her again and she smiled.
When he spoke again, his voice was raspy and in her ears, they held a lot of emotion. And when it registered in her head what he had just said, she bit her lower lip and cursed herself mentally. She knew he was going to get her to go out tonight yet she still made her plans with May. She tried to think of a plan and finally got one.
"Tonight's a bit tight. I made plans with Bree but is it okay if you come by my place a bit later? I know it's a school night and all but...I don't want to ruin this." Why was she going through all this trouble for one boy?
“Sure,” he replied. He didn't want to get in the way of any of her friendships. “But make it my place. And don't eat too much. I don't know if your plans are dinner plans, but mine kinda are.” His dad was out of town and Nolan was planning on cooking something. What he would cook, he wasn't yet sure, but he could call Marty and she'd help him figure something out.
But for the meantime, Nolan was thinking that all he wanted was a great fast food burger, and lucky him but there was an In-N-Out Burger close enough to Gould, one of the very few perks of attending there. He wasn't sure how much Sloane would enjoy it, but he hoped she would. Nolan relished the occasions when he let himself eat something horribly unhealthy. It wasn't often, but when he felt the call nothing else would satisfy him. As he neared the restaurant and pulled into the parking lot, he glanced at her to see the reaction.
Sloane hit another brick wall. If she ate too little while she was with May, it might seem like she lied to the girl. But if she ate too little with Nolan, he might think she wasn't trying too hard. She sighed and when she saw the fast food restaurant they were headed to, she wondered if Nolan had heard her conversation with May. She smiled and shook her head in amusement. She was not getting paranoid on top of everything else.
"You have to be a mind reader. I've been craving a cheeseburger since first period." She grinned before pecking his cheek and getting out of the car before him and walking straight to the joint. Maybe she'll just have to suck it up and eat everything tonight. She'll just run it all off tomorrow morning.
She stopped walking and turned to wait for Nolan.
She held a hand out to him.
Nolan entered the parking lot and headed for his car. He had hoped Sloane would be with him, but as it turned out she seemed to want nothing to do with him.
