"Welcome home, Cassius."
Cas had been so absorbed in his book that he had not realised he was at the front gate of the airport until his sister's small voice greeted him loudly. He closed his book and took off his reading glasses and smiled widely at his family members. "Uncle Adam, mom." He nodded in acknowledgment before opening his arms to his sister who grinned before running and jumping into his arms.
It had been roughly five weeks since he had to do his writing program in Denver. He had stayed with his mother's best friend while he was there and he had completed his program with flying colours.
Coming back home felt kind of weird, especially when his mother had written him an email telling him about the shooting that had happened in Gould. Thankfully none of the people he knew were dead, except for one of his teachers Mr Phan but Cas had never been close to him so it wasn't so much a tragedy.
"How was Denver and how's Rachel?" His mother asked, running her fingers through Cas' hair tenderly.
"Both are great. The writing program was an easy one, thankfully." Cas smiled modestly as they walked, Casey hanging on to his hand for dear life. Uncle Adam took Cas' haversack from his back and went to the car to drive them home.
"I made friends." Cas continued as all of them climbed into the car one by one, Casey sitting beside her brother while their mother sat in the passenger seat in front. "There was this boy called Riley who wrote amazing poetry. He kind of graduated from the program top of the whole class."
"And what did YOU get, Cas?" Casey asked in wonder. She had always looked up to her brother, wanting to be like him in a lot of ways. It didn't hurt that Cas was such a gentle person with a modest personality.
"I got second place which is quite an honor." Cas smiled down at his sister gently. "But I'm so glad I'm home." This he said to the whole car.
"We're glad you're home, son." Uncle Adam smiled at the rear view mirror at Cas. "The school principal has been asking for you and even he can't wait for you to get back in school mode."
Cas smiled and looked out the window as the other three chatted animatedly. He responded when the questions or statements were directed at him but other than that he kept quiet and stared out the window until they arrived home.
"We made your favourite dinner." Cas' mother said as they walked up to the house.
"I can smell it already." Cas replied and smiled at his mother. "It's good to be back home."
