Nolan watched as Sloane’s expression shifted, but not to what he was expecting. She started laughing, oddly enough. Crap. Nolan, as inexperienced with girls as he was, had assumed Sloane’s feelings would be hurt and she would be sad, perhaps even start to cry. But as she stood and started walking towards him, she almost seemed as if she was pissed off. She made him aware of her body, as if he wasn’t before. “I know. I know. They… you are beautiful, Sloane. It’s not about that.”
She pressed herself up against him. It felt good, but he was more concerned with how she was acting. Her playful aggression has turned into something that Nolan didn’t know how to deal with. She was tempting him with her body. He only hoped she didn’t notice the fact that it was affecting him physically. “Yes, it crossed my mind. And I’m not saying I don’t want to… to kiss you again. I just, it’s just… nothing can come of this.”
Then she back off, as if a switch had been pulled and none of this had happened. Nolan didn’t know what to say, how to respond. He liked her. She was fun and challenging and different than a lot of the girls he had dated before. Probably had something to do with the fact she was a little older than him. But he knew if anything more happened, it would be a mistake. He just had to figure out if it would be one worth making.
Sloane turned to leave. What was she thinking? Had she forgotten about the people shooting up the school out there? “Where are you going? You can’t go out there! You could get hurt!” Nolan reached out and caught her by the arm. “I’m not going to let you get hurt.”

Well of course she had not forgotten about the people shooting up the school. Sloane felt quite insulted and having Nolan suddenly grabbing her arm only made her angry. She yanked her arms out of his grip. She turned, her hair floating behind her like a quivering curtain of fire as it caught the light shining through the high gym windows. Her face contorted into an image of anger.
She had never been told to do anything in her life. Although her parents make her do chores just like every other teenager but that was different. Besides authoritative figures such as parents, law enforcers (maybe not them...much. She could bend them to her will sometimes) and sometimes teachers, no one else told her what to do.
And now she had to hear an 'order' coming from some Silver student who had just basically rejected her even when she had practically thrown herself at him. Who. Does he think. He was?
"You're not going to let me get hurt? Really?" Sloane asked in a shaky tone of voice. "Who are you to decide anything?" she continued. "And who are you to decide if nothing can come of this? I didn't ask you to marry me, dude." She gave off a short derisive laughter. "Besides. I'm a grown girl. I can take care of myself out there. Don't have to worry about me. There's nothing here so you're not obligated to care."
Sloane kicked her shoes off and brought them with her. She was not stupid enough to run in heels. She made her way to the door and untied the knot with ease before opening the door only to find herself staring at the hole of a smoking gun. "Hey there cutie. You're coming with me." The owner of the gun said in a slimy tone of voice. From where both of them were standing, Nolan was completely out of sight so the gunner was only interested in her.
Sloane had her shoes in her hand and they were itching to ram the needle thin heel into the shooter's head. She was no Wonder Woman, Sloane wasn't but she didn't feel the paralyzing shock movies and books describe as the fear running through a person's mind when they're facing the cold metallic death-bringer.
Yeah, not likely. She brought her hand up and knocked the guy in the head enough to make him drop the gun but not enough to knock him unconscious. Sloane managed to grab the gun before the gangster stopped howling. "You really messed with the wrong girl today, man." Sloane said before pointing the gun at him.

Crap. Nolan felt like he had really messed things up. Sloane was so angry at him her voice was shaking, and she seemed like she was just trying to protect her feelings. Nolan wondered if a boy had hurt her really bad before. He got the impression she was used to having her defenses up. Still, she said some pretty hurtful things, even called him dude.
She ran off, and Nolan knew there was no way he would be able to stop her shy of physically holding her back. And if she started screaming rape, Nolan could get in all sorts of trouble. It wouldn’t look good, being all alone back in the guy’s locker room. Nolan cursed himself under his breath and ran after her.
Women.
She had gotten out of the gym already, and Nolan reached the doors just in time to see Sloane grab a gun. Somehow she had disarmed a guy! Nolan opened the door. “Sloane…” he started, but stopped when he saw another gunman turn the corner down the hall behind Sloane. “Look out!” Nolan had no choice but to grab Sloane again, lifting her up and turning towards the gym. He heard three shots as he fell into the gym, and one of them caused a surge of pain to course through his left leg. The door slammed shut behind them. Nolan tried to stand, but his leg did not agree and Nolan quickly found himself back on the floor.
“Aagh! Sloane… you need to tie the door back up.” More cursing followed as Nolan felt down his left side. There was a stinging sensation, and he finally was able to locate the source. He had gotten shot right in the butt.

Slamming into the ground under Nolan's weight, Sloane could hardly breathe but she managed to scramble her way out from under him only to slip and fall on the gym floor because of her socks. Miraculously however, the gun stayed in her hand and as she tried hard to get up, she saw the door blast open and the previous gunner followed by his friend who had rang out the shots were in the gym. A slew of curses flew from her mouth as she stood rigid when the gun was pointed at her.
"Not so brave now huh, bitch?" The one she knocked down asked. Sloane was frozen on the spot. The hand holding the gun trembled. Her heart was beating fast against her ribcage and without thinking, her body jerked and the gun was raised up and she fired at random. Both of them fell on the ground screaming, grasping their arm and leg. The gun still issued clicks as both of them tried to move. It was purely on instinct that Sloane dropped the gun she was holding before running towards the other gun that had fallen on the gym floor, picking it up before either of them could move to get it.
"Get out." Sloane said in a trembling tone of voice. The grip she had on the gun seemed to falter but she tried hard to not let the two see it. They both dragged themselves out, leaving a trail of blood behind them. "I'm not going to forget that face." One of them said but Sloane had already jammed the door shut and tied her knot once more.
She dropped the gun from her hand and slid down on the floor only to see Nolan on the floor. A huge red stain was starting to form on the back of his pants. Sloane wasn't in her best state of mind and at first she thought Nolan had suddenly started to produce too much estrogen and was starting his cycle. But on further inspection, she realised that he was bleeding because he got shot. Two and two clicked together and Sloane realised the three shots that had rang out from before made contact with Nolan.
"Oh my God." Sloane scrambled towards Nolan, sliding on her knees just as she approached him. She immediately pulled Nolan up. "Crap...we need to put pressure on that." Sloane said softly. The guy had saved her life and got shot instead. She freaking owed him her life. But somehow, knowing Nolan even briefly, she knew he would just be as glad if she never talked to him ever after today.
Just as she was about to rip her top off to start tying up the source of the blood, the gym doors were banged open and through the crack that managed to open despite her tight knot, she heard what seemed to be the most beautiful words to her ears. "It's the police, is anyone in there?"
She looked down at Nolan and a smile of relief spread and she pulled Nolan's face up and gave him a kiss on his lips, deep and long. "You're going to be safe. The ambulance will be coming and...you'll be okay, man. You'll be okay." She croaked, rocking back and forth with Nolan's head on her shoulder.
