The buzz that filled the air with the upcoming game which would be commencing in just a few hours, Sawyer was kind of pumped up! More so than usual too. The football players were all obviously geared up for their first game of the season that they were high fiving everyone they passed. Sawyer was almost knocked down by a few of their high fives but she was still perky.
She saw a few cheerleaders already cheering in the lockers. Some even performed cartwheels and impromptu cheers broke out throughout the hallway. There was no denying there was a lot of energy that even the teachers weren't so surly. "Go Lancers!" Sawyer yelled randomly at whoever passed her.
And as always, because she was so high on adrenaline, she was literally jumping about that she didn't realise she was in anyone's way until she was practically lying on top of someone she had knocked down. "Oh my God!" She got up and pulled the person up with her, apologising profusely. "Are you okay?"

"First class.... freshman..." he murmured beneath his breath. After that he would have a free period, followed by the sophomores. Barnaby was still trying to memorise the schedule... and failing in that particular endeavour. As for the names of his students... Well, non-starter came to miond. Still, this was only his first week teaching at the school and history was something of a well-attended lesson, making the faces - and names - endless.
He vaguely heard a girl shouting something that sounded like 'lancers' but his full attention was on the timetable he held in his lweft hand. His right clasped a heap of books to his chest. "And after lunch... lemme see... "
The timetable skittered out of his hand and the books flew across the hallway when a person barrelled into him. Normally such an incident would have passed with Barnaby managing to retain his footing but he'd been a million miles away when it'd happened. Brain-wise, that is. As such he ended up with his 'assailant' on top of him and with a look of utter confusion ethed across his face.
He blinked at the girl... she was so tiny!... who had knocked him over and she grasped his hand as she scrambled back to her feet. "I'm fine," he assured her as he started to gather the books and paperwork back together. Damn... where had that timetable gone? "More importantly, are you alright?" he asked, shooting her a glance from where he crouched on the floor.

Sawyer's eyes bugged out when he spoke in a foreign accent. She started grinning when she realised it was English. Was he an exchange student? She hadn't been around long enough to know everybody so it wouldn't be a surprise if this guy had been around longer than her. But English accent! And he was so dang cute.
Blinking, she came to the realisation that he was talking to her. "Yes." She answered, hoping it was the correct response. He was still on the floor, picking stuff up so she scurried around trying to get what had fallen out of his hand and found a timetable that was obviously not a student's. Sawyer frowned ever so slightly before grinning again.
"Hey you're my teacher!" Why this was a surprise had to be boiled down to the fact that she hadn't been to her History classes the past few days because on Monday, she had a doctor's appointment and on Tuesday, she was spaced out of her mind and thought that it was a free period. On Wednesday, she had decided to skip class for the heck of it and by Thursday, she forgot where the class was.
"I'm Sawyer Lee James. Sorry I haven't been attending class." She gave him a wide grin before slapping his things into his hand. "There you go Mr. Black...well. Ominous name." She giggled.

Barnaby threw the girl a bright smile when she stated she was in one of his classes. He didn’t remember her face.... and her next comment told him why. “You’ve been skipping my class? You realise that means detention for the rest of the term... aah... semester... right?”
Her face fell slightly and Barnaby laughed. “I’m messing with you, Sawyer. But if you think I’m going to let you off knocking me over I’ll show you just how ominous I can be!”
He paused momentarily before laughing at the look on her face. “Don’t take me too seriously,” he advised. “And thank you... Without that timetable I would be completely screwed.”
He straightened once more. “Tell me something, Sawyer,” he continued. “What are the teachers around here like for using their first names with students? I mean, Mr Blackwell...” He shuddered slightly. “That makes me sound ancient!” Truth was, he was only a few years older than the seniors.

It was a tumultuous first two minutes as Sawyer switched emotions more times than she could count. Oh the teacher could certainly joke. He was awfully convincing too. She could handle it coming from her peers but when it comes to authoritative figures, you could never be too sure. Especially new ones.
"You're not ancient?" Sawyer asked with a serious look on her face. It didn't take too long for her to break into a grin. "Most the teachers here don't really like it when their authority is compromised so first names don't really fly well out here." She shrugged. "But I'm pretty sure you could keep it on the downlow if you wanted. Personally I think Mr Blackwell sounds awesome."
Sawyer fiddled with the ends of her hair before looking up at her teacher again with a big smile. "Did I mention I'd totally be in class today?"

Sawyer had managed to have her revenge as Barnaby had thought she’d really meant he was old... for all of three seconds. Still, he had that coming as payback was to be expected given his own teasing. “I admit I’m not a great one for authority. I mean in its place its ok but... not as a run of the mill kind of thing.” He glanced down at her with a crooked grin. “You can still call me Mr Blackwell if you like,” he said in a whisper. “And yes, I expect you to present yourself in my class today. We’re doing... actually I can’t remember but its sure to be something to do with history... right?”
He laughed along with her as they wandered away from the lockers. “So tell me something else... what was all that cheering about back there? The Lancers? Who are they?”

"Authority is hypocritical." Sawyer made a disapproving sound at the back of her throat. "Are you hypocritical, Mr Blackwell?" She narrowed her eyes and looked at Barnaby accusingly. When he got that she was kidding, she laughed with him. She continued laughing when he seemed unsure of his curriculum. As if.
"You don't know who The Lancers are? Man, you really are new." She shook her head disapprovingly. "They're our school team man! We have a game after school today. I'm going, are you? You should! You should know who's bringing the school on their shoulders! They're pretty awesome too! They've got this big dude as a starting quarterback and he's supposed to be the bomb seeing as he's the youngest and all that. Or something. I don't know. I just like it when they score touchdowns. Which they do. A lot!"

She had to be talking about American football... Something that Barnaby Blackwell knew zilch about. Actually he knew less than zilch. Still, this was his new school... He knew he really ought to know more about the game... particularly as their team seemed to have some kind of a fan base.
Ï reckon I could stop by and see what all the excitement’s about,” he said with a wry grin. “Although if I manage to track you down you realise you will be spending the entire game explaining the rules, don’t you?” Hopefully it was at least a little bit like rugby league as Barnaby had played that at college.
“The big green area out back?” he asked and Sawyer bounced her head up and down several times. “Ok... its a date!” he added. “That is, if I can see you.” That gave Sawyer her ‘get out of jail free’ card as not many kids liked hanging out with teachers after hours. If she wanted to avoid him she now knew she could and there would be no hard feelings. He’d just have to badger some other hapless student for the rules thing!
“Soooo... I guess I have to go thataway,” he added, gesturing over his shoulder. “Now... You will definitely make my class today, won’t you?” Barnaby asked with a totally mock glare.

She grinned widely when he agreed to come. "Awesome. See, authority don't need to be stifling." Sawyer laughed at the word she used. "Isn't that a funky word? Stifling? I learned that in English." She explained needlessly. "Rules?" she frowned. "I don't know the rules! Dude, just look at the field and when everybody starts cheering, you cheer too! That's all there is to it." She shrugged.
Laughing at her teacher's description of the football, she nodded and pulled two thumbs up. "Now you're getting it." She chuckled. And just like that, she had a friend to go with to the big opening game later. See, it didn't take much to be friendly! And a bit clumsy of course.
When he announced he had to leave, Sawyer blinked a couple of times before she realised she too had to leave. "Oh my God I have class!" She exclaimed. She nodded hurriedly when he asked if she was going to attend his class. "Totally. Wouldn't miss it for the world. Bye Mr Blackwell! Nice to finally meet you!" She rushed off, jumping up and down over the crowd to wave at her teacher.

He watched her run off with a broad grin etched across his face. If all of his students were that lively Barnaby knew he was in for one HELL of a term. "Semester," he reminded himself. Man, he hated the word.... (wrapped and thanks - that was fun )
