Barnaby had a feeling that had he also eaten an ice cream he would be now finding himself under Alex’s scrutiny and at the mercy of yet another one of her wet wipes. He was right in thinking motherhood suited her, despite her still being on the young side. “So the two schools are merging? That will make for an interesting few months.” As far as he’d been aware there had been some sort of reasonably amicable rivalry between the two schools. Now they were going to have to set all of that aside and learnt to live together under the one roof.
Interesting indeed!
“Accepts all kinds, eh?” he said on a laugh. “That makes me feel like I’m something of a freak ya know,” he teased. “And back in London it would more likely BE the headmaster wearing that tutu!” The rumours about the guy had been rife, after all, and kids were bound to cast doubts on the sexuality of the man at the top of the pecking order. Hopefully that wouldn’t happen to Barnaby at the hands of his students! LizBeth’s comment was still very much in his thoughts. She’d thought he was gay? Knowing her she’d only said that to bait him anyway.
“Where are you guys heading from here? My place lies thataway,” he added, pointing back over his shoulder and along the promenade

"To be honest, from my understand the schools merged once in January and again when I moved here. Gould and Silver have been under one roof for a while, but still living as separate schools. from what I know now it will be permanent. A new school for all of us." Alex said with a shrug. "It tis your guess as good as mine actually. I just know what I am told, but I am still getting use to the American school system. I was confused when I lived here three years ago and I a still confused now." Alex said laughing about it. "Ashley tends to explain it to me."
"I think the head master wore a tut. At least the one at my school did." She said smiling. Yeah she had a weird headmaster. Of course Alex knew Barnaby before he was a teacher, s he would know who she was talking about, just as she knew whom he was referring to. "There are only a handful of headmasters back home." She said smiling. "I would rather forget the image of him in a tutu."
Alex looked where he pointed. "I was going to take Kai home and drop him off then head back to my place. We are heading in the same direction it seems. I must go to El Segundo to Ashley's place. The I live in riverside. Where are you headed exactly?"

"That's the thing," Barnaby replied when Alex asked where he was heading. "I mean I know its that sort of direction but... once I reach the fishing tackle shop yonder I'm more or less screwed. I really must pick up a map of the area. You know I've only been here since yesterday and I've managed to get myself lost for..." Barnaby lifted a hand and started counting off his fingers... on *both* hands!
"... seven times. Well, eight if you count now! Miranda Drive... Do you happen to know where that is? Or if not where I can find a street map? Its not like I cna keep hoping to find ex-pats like me and have them steer me in the right direction, can I?" He laughed as he spoke but he also knew he had the sort of face that could walk up to most girls and ask for help. Being lost was a good ice-breaker... and he knew his accent didn't hurt his case either!
Shameless? Hell yeah!
"I was never all that good at remembering which way was what," he added with a wry grin.

Alex watched Barnaby as he counted. "Seven...oh eight times. And you call yourself a history teacher." Alex said with a shake of her head, "Shame on you. If you get lost, how couls the students trust you will ever be able to accuratly recall the history of this world." Alex teased. History and directions were not the same thing. So she had faith in his teaching ability. "MY phone, my Aunt gaveto me has GPS and navigation, it should tel you how to get there. Then it will tell me howto get home. Although if you come to my home, I am sure my Aunt can giveyou a ride home. I need to drop of Kai any way and she was going to take me over there. I am sure she could drop you off first."
It seemed like a much better idea thent rying to ride the bus around to each location. "I will give you a hint. Studying a map does help. I have been here a few months and I call Ashley many times a day to ask for directions. I am sure he is sick of it. The only places I know how to get to are home, my job, school, here and Ashley's place. Any where else and I am out of luck." She told him.

"Thank god I didn't take up geography instead, eh?" he replied with a laugh. "Aaah bless you, Alex!" he added when she passed him the phone. He quickly entered in 'Miranda Drive'... "Well damn... it's miles from here! How can that be? I mean I didn't walk miles to get here so... " It didn't make sense to him but Barnaby had a feeling he'd been walking for a lot longer than he realised!
"You think your aunt would be ok with the lift?"
"Positive," came Alex's assurance.
"Brill! Then looks like you get to enjoy my company for a tad longer," he added... and Barnaby opted to ignore the rolling eye action that came in response. She was joking, he knew... as was he.
They wandered on their way towards Alex's aunt's house with the Englishman stopping just the once to dart into a nearby newsagents. He reappeared moments later, brandishing a street map. "Voila! Sorted," he said in satisfaction. For now, though, he was still hoping for that lift!
"So you said your aunt is also over here. Was she here before she came here or did she come with you from England?"
