Bree stood at the side of the bleachers in her cheer uniform staring at the gathering crowd. She didn’t have her usual confidence and she was supposed to do a flip that was much harder than anything she had done before. She had almost cancelled it at least five times that day, but she was almost more scared to admit she was frightened. She had broken bones before so she knew she could handle it. Now if only the coach would blow the damned whistle so they could get started.

By the time she had to go on, Bree had seen Tyler with Haley and Cam looking miserable. She waved and smiled at the boy and hoped it helped him feel more like he belonged. She did the various moves that got her to the top of the pyramid and held up her pom poms to applause. By then adrenaline had chased away most of her fear and she launched herself from the top into a triple flip and landed to go immediately into a split. Her face blanched, but she didn't make a sound as the muscles in her thigh ripped. She made a signal to the team to let thtem know she was injured and waited until they could find a good moment in the routine to help her off the court.

After what seemed like an extraordinarily long time, Bree was discretely removed from the court and taken to the emergency room. The lady at the desk asked a lot of questions and then she was taken to an exam room. Doctor's frightened her, but she was in enough pain that she was eager to be seen. After a brief exam, she was given pain meds and a pair of crutches. The crutches made her under arms hurt, so she asked about a motorized wheelchair. She was given the name of a supplier and she called her driver to come pick her up since her car was still at school. She felt dreadfully alone and decided that she might try to get early admission at college.
