[Character Fallon Cotton] [Location: on the floor by her locker]
To say Fallon was having a bad day was an understatement. She got her books back with a very big lecture about how her sister should not have bargain for her books back and Fallon should just learn to deal with it. Fal was pissed. She did the family picture thing. What more did people want. She got her books back and found a lovely note from Sandra D in there. It read:
Fal,
I love you and the art work is good, but you need to stop wasting your life away in these drawing and your fantasy. Its time to grow up sweetie. I know its hard to grow up and deal with the world, but i just want whats best for you. Just grow up and act 16 and not live in the fairy tales. Come out more. Let me help you. Let me be part of this family.
Sandra
Did Sandra really think she could get to Fal? Did she really think Fal would be the one that would crack first. Perhaps it was true. She was the quietest and did not speak up about disliking the harlot as much, but still it sucked. What pissed Fal up was her insisting she grow up. Please. She was still a teen for god sakes.
So Fal woke up pissed and so far this day was not going her way. She kept bumping into drawers and trashcans, and doors and dropping things. She left her lunch at home and had to look for lunch money, which was unsuccessful so far. All this led Fal to her locker in search of two things. Money and her report she spent all night typing that was due next period. This lead to the mess on the floor and Fal throwing things around. Everything from her locker was on the floor. Her book bag emptied out. She looked like a crazy person throwing things and rummaging through papers. "I know its here...i know it is...find it...No body moves until they find my papers....you hear me..find the paper...find the money..." Fal said. Did she take her meds that morning? She could not remember. She might have been too pissed. "Find them and you can move."
(Tag anyone willing to deal with a crazy Fallon)

Phil had spent the previous evening pretending that it was not Valentine's Day. He wanted to be happy for all the cute couples, but there was just something about the day that was entirely too depressing. Magdalena had told him not to be a wimp about it, but she had a date, a date with a very attractive member of the popular crowd, no less, so she was one to talk! And on top of her betrayal, his parents had made every attempt to make the afternoon miserable for him, too, which was annoying -- couldn't they just ignore him, like they usually did? But no, they felt it was their responsibility to check up on him, and there was nothing more highly valued in the Lim household than responsibility.
Then something happened that cheered him up -- he saw someone in a worse mood than he was. He felt guilty as soon as the thought crossed his mind, but nevertheless the sight of Fallon cursing and tearing through her belongings cheered him up; sometimes a reminder that he wasn't the only unhappy person was just what he needed.
"So ahh what papers would you be looking for, Lady Maenad?" He inquired, wondering how anyone ought to be able to recognize her missing papers when she was sitting in a pile of them. He recognized Fallon, but as she was two grades below him and not exactly in the same subculture, he had never spoken with her and didn't know her name. That didn't mean he oughtn't help her, however, so he crouched down, picking up papers and scanning them, as though somehow this would help him decide which one was the missing one. Nope, didn't help. He still didn't have a clue what he was supposed to be looking for.

"Paper, papers, where are you papers." Fallon was repeating as Phil walked dover and spoke. She looked up at him over the mess of papers on the floor. He looked familiar, but she had no idea who he was. All she knew was he was older then her. She blinked a few times and blushed feeling like an idiot because she had been talking to herself, but she was in a crazy mood so....there was no telling what she would do.
"I am looking for a paper that looks important." She said staring to gather the mess, "I guess that did not help. Let me rephrase. I am looking for a paper that is my life line between being free and being grounded." She told him. She offer the boy a smile, "Its for English. So if you find a paper on Shakespeare guard it with your life." she said as she kept looking.
"Did you just call me Lady Maenad? Please do not tell me you just refereed to me as a follower of Dionysus, because I might think my mind is playing tricks on me. I must be hallucinating. I did not think anyone knew anything about mythology, let alone enough to call me a follower of the god of mystery, wine and intoxication, which by the way is not too far from the truth." Knowing Greek mythology went along with her fairly tales. The way Aphrodite fell in love with Hephaestus. It was romantic.
"If thats not what you were referring too then feel free to think of me as a raving lunatic because thats how I feel. Stupid family....stupid family....I hate my stupid family...well not all of them but one of them and well...I hate that one person..okay hat is a strong word, but I strongly dislike her...."Fal said going a mile a minute and finally stopping herself, "Sorry. I have a tendency to ramble when I feel I am going crazy. I am Fallon. You are?" Fal half expected the guy to walk away.

"Indeed," Phil was not entirely sure how to respond to the girl's meandering thoughts. "An important paper, on Shakespeare. On his life, the varied theories that he didn't write his plays, or on his works themselves?" He himself thought it odd that so many insisted that Shakespeare had never authored a play in his life; he supposed that jealousy and a love of scandal were the twin driving forces behind that rumor's persistance.
He began placing all non-Shakespeare papers in a stack to one side. He was a bit surprised (but pleased) that she actually knew what he was referring to; in her frenzied state that had been the first thing to come to mind, but people only infrequently understood any of his allusions. "I hope I have not offended." He apologized, "Please refrain from tearing me apart, I rather like being alive. Most of the time. At least, I'm not quite sure I want to die."
Life may not have been going exactly the way he wanted it to, but he was not yet ready to be torn to shreds at the hands of an inebriated reveler in a holy ceremony. And even if he did ever sink to such levels of despair that death looked preferable, he knew he couldn't go through with it for the very simple reason that suicide was wrong. Death would only be a true release if he made it to heaven, which he wouldn't if he killed himself. He could find forgiveness for most anything else, he was pretty sure, but he couldn't ask for forgiveness for suicide because he would already be dead.
"Family can be very...vexatious." Phil agreed cautiously. "My own have been quite meddlesome lately, they have me at wit's end." He fiddled with the growing stack of papers, trying to make them even. "It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Fallon. I am known in these parts as Philip Lim, but I much prefer Professor Augustus Darlington." He told her seriously.

"We had to take one of his plays and rewrite a scene using modern terms. However, it had to be a play other then Romeo and Juliet. My English teacher said that would have been too easy." Fallon shrugged. "We had to rewrite the play how we interpret it. Or something like that. So if you find a 'Mid Summers Night Dream' let me know." Fallon loved that play. It was just perfect. All the love and not to mention the fairy's.
"Not offended in the least. Your life is safe with me. I am just surprised that someone else is as well versed in Greek mythology. So many people just think it is all about Xena and Hercules because they were made into TV shows. Although I could point out some inconsistence with the shows." Fallon did have too much time on her hands, but she was weird like that. Always studying and looking things up when it came to her fantasy world of fairy tales.
"Well Professor it is nice to meet you." Fallon smiled. Her mood brightening. This had nothing to do so much with being Bipolar as it was just in her nature to switch moods. She was still fuming and would be fuming when she got home. "Its not my family so much as one member who thinks she can run my life. The step Harlot has a thing or two. She wrote me this stupid note and it has messed with me all day." she shrugged. "Can I ask how you came up with such a name Professor?"

"Ah, a Midsummer Night's Dream, excellent choice." Phil was more interested in ruined cities than in fairies, but fairy tales and folklore frequently intersected with the alternate history worlds he preferred. And really, who couldn't appreciate mischevious and adulterous fairy royalty? "Never really understood the need to rewrite Shakespeare, myself, it's technically in Modern," He commented. He always laughed when people complained about Shakespeare being Old English; it wasn't even Middle English. It was Early Modern, and he didn't think it was so difficult that it needed to be further modernized. But some people disagreed.
"The writer's can hardly be blamed for that, many of the myths themselves are either contradictory or have so many different versions it's difficult to decide which to choose. Although it does seem that most pop culture adaptations decide to make up their own version out of whole cloth, rather irksome, almost as much as when they decide to present fiction as historical fact. I quite admire alternative history, but it's no good confusing people by telling them your fictitious account is the truth."
He felt bad for her, when she mentioned having a meddlesome step-mother; his parents never would divorce, even if they really ought to, but he was sure a step-parent trying to fix him would be even worse than a parent. At least a parent had some excuse, but a step-parent's meddling he would truly resent. "If she stops at letter writing then perhaps you can consider yourself fortunate." But he understood, constantly defending yourself from others was not a particularly fun way to live, especially when those others were supposed to be family.
"Mm, my name?" He placed a few more papers in the pile of rejects, "I wanted something that sounded Victorian, and as the Victorians frequently harked back to the Greeks and the Romans for appellation, I determined that Augustus would be a suitable given name. Darlington, I was thinking specifically of William Darlington, the one who wrote the book on mythology." There was also the Earldom, but he that wasn't really a surname; it had influenced his decision to go with the name, however, as a Lord Darlington turned up in several of Wilde's stories, and he quite admired Wilde.

"Finally someone agrees with me. You try telling a teacher that rewriting a Shakespeare play is a waste of time. It was way to easy if you ask me. It only took me forever because I had to deal with a problem at home. I honestly only think she gave the assignment because over half the class kept asking her what every line meant. As if they have no idea how to read Shakespeare." That problem was Fallon having an episode after missing her medication for three days. Yeah she had some how placed her medicine bottle under a pile of clothes. When she started to lose it. Had she not found her medication her "mood" could last for up to two weeks. This episode was a case of Mania. In other words the fact that Fallon had stayed up for almost three days and finished about ten dresses was absolutely normal...yeah right....
Either way Fallon was okay now. She vowed that no matter how much Sandra irked her, she was not misplacing her pill bottle again because she hated her episodes. "See now that I agree with. I can't blame the writers. That was just their version on mythology, but still."
Fallon laughed, "I would like for the notes to stop, but I doubt it. Although I think its my brother or sisters turn next so I am free for now." She smiled. Sandra seemed to do that. She would take turns trying to get to one sibling. Poor Thad and Si, they were next.
"Well Professor I certainly approve of your name. Very creative and very cool." She said. She had to admire a guy with that much creativity. His was words and hers was fashion.

"Once, I tried to tell a teacher that our vocabularly list was too easy, but I must say that the rest of the class was not very fond of me after that," Phil laughed. Almost everyone else had very vehemently vocalized their dissent almost before the words had left his lips; after that he had decided it was best not to comment on the difficulty of any assignments. If he was not challenged by his school work, well, that just meant more time to work on his hobbies or to read. A challenge would have been welcome, of course, since he spent upwards of eight hours a day five days a week at school, but as he had failed to sign up for any AP classes he only had himself to blame for this state of affairs.
"Shakespeare seems to give most people difficulty," He acknowledged, "yet he remains popular. He is quite entertaining, the murder and sex and intrigue could have come out of Hollywood. Or out of myth. I suppose people really don't change, do they?" He sighed, feeling a bit melancholy with that realization. He didn't want to be that base, to be entertained by sex comedies and violence, which is what he had essentially just admitted when he confessed to liking Shakespeare. He wanted to be Good, and Pure, and he was constantly failing to live up to his ideals, ideals that he easily forgave other people for failing.
He bowed low when Fallon gave his name her approval. "Thank you, M'lady. If you ever need a new name, I will gladly be of assistance. They are a ticket to adventure and fantasy and worlds far away from the banality and boredom of the public education system or unfortunate family situations." He was already scouring his mind for a suitable name; if he had known about her condition, he probably would have picked Ophelia, but for the moment his mind was scanning naiads and fairies: Titania, Semele, Autonoe, Ino, Agave...what name would be most appropriate for this girl he had just met, and knew so little about, except that she was well-versed in mythology and Shakespeare and had a vexing step-mother.
He was still idly examing papers as they chatted, but he was beginning to wonder if it was even in this particular pile when he found it. "Aha!" He held the paper aloft, "I believe I have found your interpretation of Master Shakespeare's comedy."

Fal smiled, "I could have used you in my class to tell the teacher this assignment was stupid, but to be honest half the class thinks Shakespeare is still alive and the other half this its the name of a play." Fal nodded, "Yeah so maybe this assignment was a good thing. I swear society today is corrupted by typical Hollywood movies and the typical Hollywood ending." Fal said with the shake of her head.
"At least with Shakespeare there were surprises and the ending was not always predictable. In Hollywood today its all about boy meets girl, boy loses girl andthen boy gets girl in the end. Granted I love fairy tales, and as predictable as they were at least there was substance behind them. And I am well aware there is a dark version to all fairy tales, which I don't mind at all." Fal loved the romantic love stories, but she was aware of the darkness with in some versions, "Although Shakespeare use of sex and comedy is quite classic I will admit."
Fal smiled as he mentioned giving her a nicknamed, "oh you must. I must have a nickname to help me escape from reality when I need time away. Call me crazy, but I just love the way that sounds." She curtsied as he called her m'lady. "Thank you kind sir." She smiled and laughed. Her mood was turning. Looks like the day was looking up. Usually she could stay in a bad mood all day.
"You what...." she took the paper from him, "oh my god thank you." Without thinking and in typical Fallon fashion she hugged and kissed the Phil's cheek. Fal smiled up at him, "Professor you just saved my English grade, how can I ever repay you. Thank you so much." For a moment she actually thought she was going to have to rewrite the whole thing.

"If you are crazy, m'lady, then I am, as well." Phil informed her. "And while there may be some who agree with that assessment, I much prefer the term imaginative to crazy." And honestly, who would want to live in reality? Reality was not fun. At least in his fantasies, as dark as they could be, he was cooler and more capable than he actually believed himself to be.
"Then what about Semele," He began, deciding upon the mother of Dionysus. Completely aside from Fallon's admission that the cult of Dionysus suited her, the name was pretty and apt to confuse just about everyone. He was sure she would get the reference, of course, but he doubted many others would, if any. Even those who delighted in mythology rarely knew more than a few of the more popular myths, after all. But there was so much to know, so he couldn't hold not knowing Semele against anyone.
"Now for a surname, hmm, Lady Semele Hallward?" He suggested. He had almost, when first choosing his own name, used Hallward for himself, feeling a bit of a kinship with fictional artist Basil Hallward, but Darlington had seemed a safer choice in the end. With Fallon, though, there was no reason not to use that particular surname. He didn't think anyone would put together the painter of Dorian Gray's portrait with the young girl, unless she was an artist. Maybe she was, he actually didn't know, but if she was, well, then it would be actually appropriate, more than just a name he picked because he happened to identify with the tragic character. He hoped there was not actually any power in this sort of name-play, though, or he would be sentencing her to murder by the person she most admired. "Or perhaps a lady of some standing, Baroness, or Duchess."
He rubbed the back of his neck after she kissed him, "Ah, no trouble at all, no need to repay me, it would be unseemly to allow a damsel to suffer without attempting to help." He mumbled, embarrassed. "I am sure your grade would not have suffered from one missing assignment, after all, a lady of your intelligence must have a remarkable grade point average."
