Christophe didn't seem too pleased with the things she suggested, but Kayla didn't really have anything else to add. "Ummm there's like beach volleyball and stuff like that," she suggested. She was always up for a good game of beach volleyball after all. But then again, not everyone was really into sports like Kayla was. Athletics was really her main interest.
It was at that moment that Renald started freaking out over a bird. Christophe took off after him, adding that he wouldn't be long. Kayla was going to offer to help, but he disappeared before she could. Should she just leave? He told her that he wouldn't be long, which sort of told her that she was coming back. She thought it would be sort of rude to just leave while he was gone, so she stuck around for a few minutes. However, decided that he probably wasn't coming back, she walked over and tossed her now empty bottle into a recycling bin by the store and moved back to the sand to do a few quick stretches before getting back to her run.
However, as she finished stretching, he appeared again. "Oh, there you are," she said with a smile. "I was beginning to think that you'd just taken off," she said with a shrug. "I guess I'm not as boring as I thought," she added with a slight laugh.

She was still there! He'd honestly thought she would have made use of the opening and vanished but he was pleased to find out that hadn't happened. "I wouldn't do that to you," he replied with a grin. "And you are far from boring me, Kayla," Christophe added. "I just hope I'm not delaying you from your run." He didn't think so as she would surely have continued it had that been the case. "Would you like to walk with me for a short while? Renard is getting a bit restless and we can chat some more as he gets his exercise. Unless... you probably have other things to do and I am being selfish in wanting your company."
But it was good to chat with someone of around his own age. Christophe was a sociable boy and liked to have people around him. In fact, the only time he preferred to be alone was when he was out logging the movements of the Gamma pod in Nanaimo Sound off the Vancouver coast line. He would become so engrossed in his task that he'd be no good as company for anyone.
"Tell me more about beach volleyball," he urged. "I've never played it myself but I've seen it on television. Is it very different to ordinary volleyball? I've done that at school but can't say I'm all that good. Still, its a fun game."

Kayla didn't know why he was adamant about staying with her. Most people would have taken off. Maybe it was the whole French thing. Maybe there was a different sense of values or courtesy or whatever. But whatever it was, he seemed to have attached himself for the morning and Kayla did want to get back to her run but she didn't want to be rude and was too nice to say so. It wasn't that she had any issues with the boy. He seemed really nice. She just didn't know him really and wasn't used to strangers being so open and friendly.
"It's okay, I'm in no rush," Kayla said. As long they stayed by the beach she was sure she'd be okay. Plus, he looked around her age, maybe a little older, but not old enough to be creepy or frightening. And if he did turn into some creepo, she could always run away. Kayla could sprint pretty fast if she wanted to.
She started walking along with him, in the opposite direction she wanted to go but she didn't mind because it would just make her run back longer. She didn't have any plans for the day so she supposed it didn't really matter how long she stayed out. She made a mental note not to go too far though as not to tire herself too much on the run back. After all, she'd still need to ride her bike back to her house when it was finished.
"Oh yeah, beach volleyball is pretty much the same as regular volleyball...its just on the beach and a lot of times less formal about how many players and all that, but if you have the right amount you can still play it all official if you wanted," she explained. "There's different stretches of the beach that have nets already set up for anyone to use. In the summer they're hard to come by because they get taken up pretty quickly, but this time of year its usually fairly easy to snag one," she explained. Not as many people went to the beach in the winter. It was as plain and simple as that.

He was pleased that she agreed to walk with him as that meant Renard could run off some of his endless energy while he and Kayla could chat some more. He had a feeling she was a little on edge but as they'd only just met that was perfectly understandable. As such he made sure there was a good foot of sand between them and that he didn't crowd her personal space. Christophe listened attentively as she explained what beach volleyball was all about. "Ah I see so it can be played throughout the year. It sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind trying it out for myself. So I can come down here and join in a game if the others don't mind?" Kayla nodded. "Bien, I will do that," he stated in a decisive tone. A good way to make more friends as well.
"Beach life is something I am still getting used to," Christophe told her. "In Paris the nearest beaches are on the nortehr coast... An hour's drive away. They are usually cold and not as sandy as this. Then in British Columbia they have lots of stones and its a bit cold to swim in the water even in the summer without wet suits. I avoided it as much as I could and only had to swim without a wet suit on the times I fell overbaord. The inflateable boat I had then wasn't all that stable. With the waves and tide in the sound it wasn't hard to rock such a lightweight craft. So," he continued, glancing down at across at Kayla, "... you play beach volleyball?" She looked like she liked to stay in shape and so he wouldn't be at all surprised if she told him she did.

"Yeah, well I guess it can, depending on where you live," Kayla said. "Like here we pretty much can play whenever but some places you can't. Like the beaches on the east coast are too cold in the winter, to really utilize them," she explained. She shrugged. There really wasn't much to it. It was just volleyball.
"Yeah, it does take awhile to get used to," she agreed. "It took me awhile to get used to it too when I first moved here, since I didn't grow up around it. Where I grew up the beach was like 2 hours away," she told him. "Yeah, I think you need a wet suit to go in the water here this time of year too. I'm told we get currents from like Alaska or something which is why the water is so cold. I've only gone in the ocean in the summer months though, so I don't really know."
They continued to walk. Kayla looked out at the ocean and watched at Renald ran around jumping about. He really was a cute dog. "Do I play...sometimes," she said. "It's not like a regular thing or anything," she said. "Yeah, you can probably usually find someone playing though--its pretty big out here." She honestly didn't know how open people were to letting other people join in their games. She'd never asked.

Christophe listened closely as Kayla answered his seemingly endless stream of questions but she was a good source of knowledge regarding beach volleyball and if he wanted to join in a game then knowing as much as he could surely wasn't going to hurt.
"I think I will check tomorrow. This afternoon I am to meet someone... At least, if she still wants to. I think she will." He couldn't be absolutely sure, though, as they'd only really spoken that one time.
"If you are here tomorrow then I will look out for you," he added. That in itself was probably more than enough to keep Kayla safely at home!
"Renard! Ici!" he called and the husky pup bounded back to Christophe. "I have to head back home," he said to Kayla. "My mother has a list as long as my arm... Chores I need to complete before dinner," he added with a wry smile. "And I'm sure she will have thought up at least ten more tasks while I've been out!" He dipped his head slightly. "Merci... Thank you for your company. This has been a really nice walk and I hope I haven't spoilt your run."

"Yeah, definitely," Kayla said. "I run here in the mornings on weekends." Well, Kayla ran every day, just not always near the beach. She wasn't sure if she'd be up for volleyball tomorrow or not though, but she didn't want to be rude.
"Oh yeah, no problem," Kayla said. "I should probably head back anyway. Don't want to get too much farther down the beach since I do have to run back," Kayla explained. "But it was good meeting you. Good luck with finding stuff to do and all that," she told him. "Anyway, I should go," Kayla said. She gave him a wave before turning around and starting to run away. She veered closer to the water where the sand was more solid to run on and headed back.
It took her awhile but she finally reached her starting point. It had been a good workout. She rested for just a minute before jumping on her bike and heading home. Now it was time to shower and figure out what she wanted to do for the rest of the day.
